"Matchmaking will fail" - Muselk

"People hate to face this truth, but the majority of TF2s playerbase are interested in it for its casual gameplay, not competitive (obviously /r/tf2 is a bit more hardcore). Even if 20% of the players were on competitive 24/7 (not gonna happen), once you begin to divide those players up by region, skillgroup, whos in game, and whos queuing, it just WONT work."

I used to play with Pokemon cards a long time ago but since I do other things now and not that, I don't make public, decisive comments on things I don't know about

Depends how you define "failure" - if the purpose is to get new people into competitive TF2 and grow the game, then it certainly will fail if the leagues don't act.

But he cannot really speak for what "most people" enjoy - TF2 has such a variety of gamemodes, players and people from different areas, and a huge universal appeal, he cannot say with certainty whether it will fail or not. A lot will depend on Valve as usual.

i shitposted about this

his post is terrible for a bunch of reasons but key points:

1. he compares tf2 player counts with 2016 CSGO in an attempt to say TF2 cant support MM, even though CSGO had similar player counts when MM was added. He has a very poor understanding of the demographics of both games when MM will be/was added, and without looking at that you can't really comment about them.
2. He assumes valve will fuck up MM in some catastrophic but nonspecific way and refuses to expand on why they would or how it could be avoided. "It will be bad because valve is bad" isn't a good reason, no matter how hard he plays the victim card.

Basically:
HEY GUYS LETS BE CYNICAL ABOUT A MAJOR TURNING POINT IN TF2'S HISTORY AND NOT ENCOURAGE IT AT ALL.

THAT'S HOW WE MAKE THIS GAME BETTER RIGHT?

bl4nkIt never had a chance to succeed

every time i see blank post he says matchmaking will fail and gets upfragged, but as soon as muselk posts the same you guys all disagree. I don't really know who muselk is but he seems popular enough to know where most of the playerbase is so maybe his opinion means something but then again he's a pubber so iunno.

i think MM will have one of 2 effects:

1. People will play and say 'wow, that was so fucking bad that there must be some league or something where 90% of the shit is banned' and then proceed to find such a league. TF2 thrives and we're all happy campers

2. People will play and say 'wow, that was so fucking bad i think i will never play that again' and go back to pubbing/saxton hale/trading/jacking off in pony servers. TF2 stays the same and declines as more ppl leave for some first person moba action

I personally think the latter will happen but who knows

eeehe compares tf2 player counts with 2016 CSGO in an attempt to say TF2 cant support MM

Thats honestly what bothers me the most. I dont care if people think tf2 will become an esport, stay the same, or die, but stop comparing it to CSGO today. CS has grown exponentially since it had matchmaking, and even more intensely recently.

You cant compare CSGO today(a game that has had matchmaking for years, consistent developer support for competitive, 1 million dollar tournaments 3 times a year sponsored by the developer along with other big tournaments, including one nationally televised) with TF2 (no dev support until recently, matchmaking to be released). Its like picking a baby in a fight versus a grown man. Grown mans going to win because well, he's grown.

matchmaking is dead

lets stunt the growth of tf2 mm with complete cynicism before it even starts

remember, if you don't already have a massive competitive fanbase, you're guaranteed to always lose. just look at super smash brothers melee, 12 years in and they get into a major tournament? pffft, like that'll ever go anywhere

Pub players often complain that there's always a steamroll in pub servers so hopefully giving them a super easy way to have a closer game will inspire them to play more. Once matchmaking actually does matchmaking (as in puts people up against you of similar skill level), I'm optimistic that players not currently in competitive will try it out and realize that this game has so much depth skill-wise and will be inspired to play and try to improve.

Valve MM will probably end up being a place where people can have casual, close games and won't be as serious as actual competitive play anyway (like in CSGO). The idea that the community is too "casual" doesn't really make any sense because MM won't be overly competitive anyway.

at least he only did it on a 0 points reddit thread instead of in a video

he's saying that tf2, even accounting for the fact that half the playerbase can't walk and shoot at the same time it still has a lot of players atm, plenty to support mm with 12 players. he compares tf2 to csgo as if csgo's mm performance is the bare minimum for a mm system to succeed...

it's almost like he thinks mm is meant for current tf2 players and not to make tf2 look attractive to players who have yet to play tf2. It's almost like he believes his opinion holds weight and in fact it only does to other people of his kind (mentally challenged users of reddit). It's almost like he forgot that mm beta requires you to be a 4 year old premium user of tf2 and nobody wants to play it cause beta is bad right now.

he's just spewing bullshit to justify playing overwatch

very unfortunate that a very influential (to the section of TF2 that matchmaking is aimed at) is being unfairly cynical about something that needs people to be critical yet engaged in to be successful.

its literally so much more helpful just to tell your moron fanbase to give their feedback to make it better
