hooliPersons with transsexualism, after sex reassignment, have considerably higher risks for mortality, suicidal behaviour, and psychiatric morbidity than the general population. Our findings suggest that sex reassignment, although alleviating gender dysphoria, may not suffice as treatment for transsexualism, and should inspire improved psychiatric and somatic care after sex reassignment for this patient group.
http://dx.doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0016885

OUTCOME:
There was an excellent response to pimozide 2 mg daily, with a cessation of both cross-dressing and the wish for sex reassignment. When, after 1 year, the dose was reduced to 1 mg daily, there was a rapid return of the cross-dressing and the wish for sex reassignment. An increase in the dose again led to a remission which has been maintained since then.
CONCLUSION:
Pharmacotherapy with pimozide should be considered in cases of doubtful gender dysphoria.
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8839957

Transgendered persons have a higher rate of mortality, suicidal behavior, and depression before (if) they get gender reassignment surgery too. You might be surprised to find that being told you are wrong about your own gender your whole life isn't really the most joyful way to be raised. Correlation =/= Causation, this specific instance

dollarlayer please read your post wherein you compared redefining a medical condition to calling an apple a bananna again aloud to yourself. If you don't realize how incredibly poor that analogical reasoning is then I really think you are beyond saving.

as do gay people, it's almost as if society's awful treatment of trans people leads to a high suicide rate, on TOP of the already established gender dysphoria and internal conflict.

Literally just google Gender Identity disorder. Last I checked a disorder refers to a treatable mental illness.

The actual source I was talking about which talked about it being closely related to anorexic people I can not locate. I randomly stumbled upon it a couple weeks ago and didn't bookmark it. If I find it I will post it.
"gender identity disorder" was reclassified as gender dysphoria under the DSM-V, just as an fyi.

It really doesn't matter what one organization reclassifies something as. GID is still a widely used and accepted term in the medical community. You can reclassify anything and say an apple is now a banana. But the fact still remains that it is still a widely accepted and used term, and a disorder is a treatable mental condition.

Look at hoolis above post for one way of treating the issue. I believe that drug was mentioned in the article that I read a couple weeks ago.

The APA is the most influential psychology association in America and the DSM is widely regarded as a manual for psychiatric diagnosis. You argued that it was a disorder and brought up gender identity disorder. My point was that it has been reclassified, and that this is no longer the case. It's almost as if people in the medical field change terminology all the time and phase out old ones because they're inaccurate and sometimes harmful.

dollarlayerIf its not a disorder then why is it being treated with an antipsychotic drug often used to treat other delusional and paranoia disorders? Please look up Pimozide.

Where the fuck did you get this information from? It was a single article with a whopping sample size of 1 from 20 years ago. Please read things before you post about them.

re the suicide rate/depression thing: yeah it's almost as if society's widespread violence and bigotry against trans people and being raised to believe that you're a gender you're not can lead to being sad. Correlation isn't causation. It's honestly kind of appalling to see people bring up trans suicide rates as a gotcha without taking a second to think about why that is.

too bad the APA website, which I already linked, seems to agree that you're an ignorant bigot
The problem with arguing with you regressive lefties is whenever someone disagrees with you, you throw out the bigot card and sham them

an ad hominem attack is only ad hominem if the insult takes the place of actual evidence

I gave evidence, and then used it to insult someone who was ignorant

I mean he doesn't seem to have a problem with your opinion that people with gender identity issues need gender reassignment to help them. He's just stating from what he's seen it is treatable without gender reassignment. You seem to be more intolerant of him having this viewpoint, than he is of yours. This issue from what I've read the correct answer has not yet been determined and research is on going. Maybe if the research had been finished and a consensus reached by scientists as to what is correct you'd be justified in your aggressive shittalking of people with different opinions, but it's not so you are the bigot here tbh fam

You can't pick your gender, race, nationality but that doesn't mean you shouldn't be proud of these things. If you are born superior in certain aspects then you should still be proud of it. For example I am very proud of being white and i'm proud of my country. People are born as they are and nothing can change that. If you are born a male then you are a male for life and nothing will ever change that, if a man wants to be addressed as a women and wear womans clothing then that's fine as long as they are really mentally ill.

I posted the swedish study to demonstrate that sex assignment surgery often won't make the subject happy and can easily lead to suicide. Patients became 20x more likely to commit suicide. It is very significant and perhaps an indicator that an answer lies in a different direction.

The statistic is for post op patients so the way society treats transgendered people does not have a significant effect on the suicide statistic considering society can't see what's in your pants.

If you think getting SRS is going to form a forcefield to stop being from being bigoted towards them then I think you're seriously kidding yourself.

No, transitioning isn't going to solve all trans people's problems. They're still going to have a mountain of violence against them. It's almost as if people are happier when they're allowed to be themselves! #woah

My last point is that not every trans person pursues or even wants surgery. It all depends on the individual.

Your reading comprehension skills are remarkably subpar given how confident you sound. I never said people with gender identity issues need "gender reassignment". Incidentally, there is no such thing as "gender reassignment", it's sexual reassignment because it changes someone's sex via surgery to match the gender they have in their head. In any case, as I already said in a previous post, many transgender people do not get SRS and choose to live pre-op for their entire lives. What hooli is saying is not that SRS is unnecessary, but that gender dysphoria can be "cured", via medication, to make people feel "male" or "female" again, because it's just a disorder like body dysmorphia is. This is utter nonsense and, as has been pointed out many times, the APA no longer subscribes to this view (even though they are historically very slow to change their mind on issues for far too long- see: homosexuality).

In the area I am talking about, the consensus HAS been reached.

Please stop acting so overconfident on issues you know absolutely nothing about.

hooliharvestas do gay people, it's almost as if society's awful treatment of trans people leads to a high suicide rate, on TOP of the already established gender dysphoria and internal conflict.
I posted the swedish study to demonstrate that sex assignment surgery often won't make the subject happy and can easily lead to suicide. Patients became 20x more likely to commit suicide. It is very significant and perhaps an indicator that an answer lies in a different direction.

The statistic is for post op patients so the way society treats transgendered people does not have a significant effect on the suicide statistic considering society can't see what's in your pants.

but they can see your adam's apple, or your big shoulders, or your wide face and prominent jaw. (or reverse for trans men)
it's not like every transition causes all trans people to look completely cisgender and passing, in fact post op causes more problems society wise than pre op, because at least pre-op trans people pass as cis, transitioning is far more than just "change the sex organs!!" so yes you could easily say post op trans people are more likely to become suicidal especially if the transition didn't cause them to fully turn out like that dude i posted on the first page and society laughs at them because they think they're a drag queen crossdresser or something

The statistic is for post op patients so the way society treats transgendered people does not have a significant effect on the suicide statistic considering society can't see what's in your pants.[/quote]

but they can see your adam's apple, or your big shoulders, or your wide face and prominent jaw.

Well if you look back at history whites are superior to some other races in many ways. The greatest countries on earth were built by whites and maintained by mostly whites. From my point of view people should be judged on what their actions and what they have accomplished and so whites are definitely superior in that regard. I don't see how this means I dislike other races at all cause I don't

HuckHow do you measure how great a country is?

Based on how similar it is to the US in the 1950s or 1980s. Duh.

saturn_If you think getting SRS is going to form a forcefield to stop being from being bigoted towards them then I think you're seriously kidding yourself.

No, transitioning isn't going to solve all trans people's problems. They're still going to have a mountain of violence against them. It's almost as if people are happier when they're allowed to be themselves! #woah

My last point is that not every trans person pursues or even wants surgery. It all depends on the individual.

I don't know what SRS but my point is that transgender people who do the surgery are at very great risks. Considering you don't walk around with your genitals exposed nobody would know that they've done the surgery meaning these suicides are caused by the biological/hormonal damage of the surgery. People don't always know what's best for them and the argument of "I want it so it's good for me." is not very sound. I don't claim to have a solution, just that we should try to treat it rather than enable it.
