hektikHas the problem people have with that anything to do with how Christians feel when the cross or other symbols of their religion are used by, like, rock bands and feminists?

Honest question if the complaint is kinda the same.

would depend on who you're asking honestly

some christians would be offended because its sacrilegious or some word and some would be offended because they don't like seeing christianity associated with things that aren't part of the christrian message and some are simply offended because they don't think people who participate in the church have a right to use the iconography

tbh I think the first group, especially when applied to other things has some merit. like the maori tattoos or headdresses or wearing war medals or w/e that you didn't earn is kind of shitty because you're trivializing a lot of what it means, but the second and third are shitty because they involve either censoring artists in yr example or more broadly preventing cultural tidbits from being spread

As soon as I left college and joined the working world, all of this "cultural appropriation" and SJW bullshit went away and disappeared. Ask yourself: when is the last time you saw anyone older than 25 with a 40-hr/week job fighting for these 'injustices'? It's a generational thing and honestly won't fly very far in the private sector aside from a marketing and branding standpoint to get all the teenagers' parents' money.

I can understand cultural appropriation being a problem if you're really misrepresenting a culture in a bad stereotypical or cringeworthy way by doing it, but most people seem to get really upset over stuff that really doesn't matter.
e.g. I know a white guy who wears African shirts and acts like they're down with people from Africa even though he doesn't know wtf he's talking about and says shit like "oh you're from x country you must love this shit". There's nothing wrong with him wearing the shirt in itself but all the other shit that comes with is kind of cringeworthy and I can imagine it could really piss people off.

On the other hand acting like "my culture trademarked this, you can't use it" is stupid in most cases. People have been stealing ideas for clothes/tools etc. from each other's cultures for millenia because either they thought it looked cool or it was functional.

What happened to create the sequence of events where the hippie culture of the past that preached that we're all one race and one humanity changed to a hippie culture preaching that we're all extremely different and shouldn't mingle together and copy each other at all.

like most political correctness buzzwords, the phrase "cultural appropriation" has been overused, molested, and utterly lost in translation. it's no longer is used in reference to people who steal another culture's values or music or whatever solely for personal gain, with no respect or interest in the culture itself (see: blackface). that shit's not cool. but there's nothing wrong with people who are genuinely interested in another culture and want to integrate parts of it into their life (see: '50s and '60s rock and roll acts full of white guys who really liked blues music), and some kids get salty over that and they're usually white college kids with no job or hobbies to busy themselves with.

Funny how in the process of attempting to be politically correct, people worried about cultural appropriation and white chicks getting dreadlocks are basically regressing back to the arguments of segregation and having different types of people being "separate but equal" (`・ω・´)

this is what dont get. like why are people so fucking triggered (ironic yeah) by these sjws and tumblr and shit? they're a vocal minority with minor impact on any real world politics, or real life in general really. just let them be, or try to reason with them idk but this senseless bashing seems like a waste of everyones time

So the Black Lives Matter movement that want "safe spaces" (black only spaces) and hate "cultural appropriation" aren't in support of segregation?

Its hard to learn and discuss important issues when you have to give trigger warnings and dance around political correctness. This has stopped some people from going to speak at colleges altogether perhaps denying the people who actually wish to challenge ideas and learn from being able to interact with the great minds of our time.

At least here they were able to hold the debate. Still it's pretty ridiculous that you can go to college which is supposed to be a place about challenging ideas, debating and learning, but if someone has different ideas than you, you need a safe space in order to function.

These ideas do have real world consequences. It may not seem like a big deal to you because it happens so gradually but these ideas direct our cultural values towards a society of weak, self-righteous, professional victims. If you view society as an organism then it would appear as cancer spreading and you are saying we should not take steps to eliminate it. It's the exact position they hope you'd take so they don't have to risk their worldview being shattered into a million pieces and can further propagate their nonsense onto the impressionable. We are on ideological battle grounds.

"Without debate, without criticism, no Administration and no country can succeed-- and no republic can survive. That is why the Athenian lawmaker Solon decreed it a crime for any citizen to shrink from controversy. And that is why our press was protected by the First Amendment-- the only business in America specifically protected by the Constitution-- not primarily to amuse and entertain, not to emphasize the trivial and sentimental, not to simply "give the public what it wants"--but to inform, to arouse, to reflect, to state our dangers and our opportunities, to indicate our crises and our choices, to lead, mold educate and sometimes even anger public opinion."-- John F. Kennedy
