How do I deal with anger and just pure "salt"?

I'm literally unstable and cannot handle many things. I sometimes feel like an elitist and need some help getting back on track before I do something stupid. What does tf.tv do to calm themselves down after a loss or just meeting some jerk in a game? I cannot handle that apparently.

Edit: I often find myself extremely depressed sometimes as well. I'm not sure why. Maybe I'm just not satisfied with something.

This is serious.

It honestly just doesn't really affect me.

I just say, "wow, that guy is an asshole" then I go about my day. He continues to be an asshole and I continue to not be an asshole using him as an example.

There's similar advice from people dealing with troubles in Poker, realize it's a game and try to maintain that it's a game, you're supposed to have fun.

I give a hearty chuckle and ignore.
If you're getting flamed and can't ignore, hud_saytext_time 0.
If they taunt after every kill, don't allow yourself to be frustrated by losing a fight, think of how to play smarter, and don't let an inability to play smarter affect your mood. If you're not playing better, don't let that get to you, recognize there are off-days, swings to ability, etc.

If it happens in a pug/scrim/pub, find something else to do. Surfing can be relaxing and productive if you wanna play TF2 to center yourself, but if you're just done with the game, take a break for an hour before launching.

gl buddy I used to have huge anger issues that controlled me but I've learned to just forget and refresh

If you are truly depressed, it may help to see someone i.e. a doctor. It can do wonders.

try to learn how to focus on how you are playing and not who you are playing

i used to always get pissed off when playing in DM servers when gunboats soldiers would just constantly bomb or in MGE when people would play "gay"

But then you realize that feeling that way is just detracting from improving at the game, which is why you should be playing. Just focus on where your crosshair is going and hitting the shots you should hit in DM/MGE, and focus on your comms and gamesense in scrims. Eventually you will learn to tune out retards and retarded playstyles and you can improve much faster and not get mad, but you have to really remind yourself so keep at it.

you gotta take a break.

I think when I started playing tf2 I was actually so toxic. Like I look back on myself at 19 and myself now at 25 and it's night and day. My outlook when I played dota was kind of the same, though tf2 is much different since you have teammates and not peruvians ruining your rank.

I got to 5k mmr a few times but this last time I just threw in the towel. It takes too much out of me emotionally to play and I always knew it was eating me alive. I finished college, got a job out of school, moved out, and went through a rough breakup and just played video games and lifted to get through the day.

You don't get the same high playing games as you do lifting but the feelings sometimes get intertwined. Now I'm at a point where if I skip the gym I get salty when I play games, but if I play games too much I also get salty.

The only way to lower the sodium level is to walk away from the cause until you reach a point where it no longer becomes a part of your everyday thought process.

I think I actually took off a season before the season I played invite with EG and cyzer and shit. Once a game becomes a chore or a struggle and not a game it kind of ruins the point of it. Obviously I play games to get better at them now, and can't stand casual players when I have that competitive urge to win which probably came from sports at a young age (it's hard to play sports in engineering school, so giving up football for math is pretty shitty)

find something else to quench your need to rage aka weights or some form of physical exercise, and play an easier game or watch some tv if youre bored.

sorry for the wall of text but the struggle is real sometimes.

I generally ignore the shit talkers and taunters. If you react, you will give them all the more reason to continue. If you don't react, they will stop out of bordem and move onto something else. There are a few toxic assholes in the community that I just simply avoid and don't play with. If you are not having fun, then don't play. Sometimes I'll avoid toxic lobbies or pugs if I know I probably won't have any fun.

If you lose a match or something you may need sometime to wind down from that loss. Maybe going into a pub and destroying a bunch of noobs will help. Or just try play a different game to wind down for a bit. That seems to help.

Also if you feel TF2 is making you depressed or frequently getting you in a bad mood or something, eliminate it. Don't play, or just play it casually. Games should be a fun escape from reality, should be something chill and relaxing. If you don't find yourself recovering soon, I agree you may want to seek a doctor or therapist/ counselor.

If you find yourself feeling extremely depressed, I would second going to see a psychologist. If you're in college often times the school will have personal or crisis counseling and health services and I would take advantage of them. I definitely found it helpful to talk about how I felt, and was able to vent a lot of frustrations.

As someone with depression, talking to your pcp will be the best step to helping you.
If you're having trouble with someone being an ass, I always just say "ok someone's being mean in a video game" putting it in perspective helps show how dumb and pointless it is, it's a game about killing people it happens.it doesn't always work because nobody's perfect. The most important thing is to just try and be honest with the people you care about and or your team, if you can't play you can't play and it will only get worse if you ignore what you need.

it sounds like you have a legitimate anger management problem, more significant than just being mad at a video game because you lost

I would just like to thank all of you for your responses. I was not expecting to get so many positive responses. I have calmed down and am now doing fine. I will try all of the things you have said for me to try out and hope for the best.

Just have fun a single player game and enjoy the story line.

Take a break of competitive stuff.

This might piss people off but whenever I get mad at TF2 I just remember that the game is basically dead and there's no reason to care how well I do at it. Doesn't really stop me from getting mad at other games, but it works pretty well in TF2. I used to get really fucking mad at this game and once I took this new point of view I became a much calmer person.

there's no reason to care about how well u do in csgo/league/dota either with that logic unless ur planning to go pro lol

thanks for resetting the "game is dead" counter though

just by not eating proper food your feelings/mood can change rapidly. for example if you eat a lot of sugar (like lot of gamers do) you get this rush feel, but the opposite when the body is done with the sugar.

playing with a fix team helps a lot. you going to tolerate situations a lot better if you feel closer to your team mates...sort of.

also recommended to play a secondary game. jump into quake live clan arena sometimes where everyone is terrible and cant shoot, or just some single player game something rewarding.

hud_saytext_time 0 -> this. hiding the chat in cod back in the days actually helped me.

i just sit back and think why people are beating me to find my own flaws and how to work on them
sometimes it just comes to a case of them having more experience than me or me making mistakes, all of which are fixable by putting your energy into observing what they're doing right or you're doing wrong
