How to find real audio quality

So I found this neat little video/audio converter that gives you .mp3, .wav, and even .flac.

http://www.onlinevideoconverter.com/video-converter

But my question is: when it "converts" to a lossless file like .flac or .wav, is it really getting the audio quality? My fear is that it takes the same cut-off .mp3 and just turns it into another file type, being no higher quality-wise from a regular .mp3. Is there a way to find out what the actual audio quality is?

You could open it in an audio player and check the bitrate

Yeah I try that. But can't the bitrate that it says be higher, while the actual bitrate is lower?

I tested it by looking up literally "the worst quality" on youtube and it gave me the same bitrate as another song that had 720p: 1536 Kbps

You can't convert an mp3 into a flac and get more quality. Not really at least. The program doesn't know what's supposed to be inbetween. It can try to fill in the gaps but it will never be true flac or wav.

when you convert a lossy file to a lossless codec it doesn't suddenly remember what was lost compressing the audio, you just end up with a larger file that sounds exactly the same

Yeah, that's what I was feared. Is youtube's quality at mp3 automatically?

mp3 doesn't necessarily have shit quality, its just lossy.

youtube store audio at like 126 kb/s i think tho so like yr gettin p shit audio quality. Just get a what.cd account or smthn man

iirc youtube 1080p is mp3 with 192kbps bitrate
as has been said before that is the maximum quality you can get out of it (unless of course they upped the audio bitrate for higher resolution videos like 4k)

MP3 is just the format, depending on the encoder and the settings you can go from "heavily distorted crap" to "a human being can't tell it apart from a lossless source".

YouTube does AAC, and for 720p or better streams the bitrate is 192kbps audio, which is good. If you're going to rip music from YouTube videos, try to get it from 720p or better sources.

Of course, this all goes to shit if the uploader used a crappy MP3 to make a high res/bitrate video, aka fake HD.

Hm, so I just looked it up again, and apparently YouTube stores 192kbps audio for HD videos, but the one that's actually played on youtube.com is 128kbps. So make sure whatever tool you're using to download the videos before you transcode them is getting the highest quality version. You can use this tool to find out what qualities are available and download them: http://www.h3xed.com/blogmedia/youtube-info.php

came here to say what Pigby already said.
you can't expect to ever get that flawless quality from stuff like youtube or spotify, unfortunately.

If you're looking for high quality audio, either torrent, buy it on bandcamp, or buy the cd. Higher quality is better (to a certain point before it gets pointless). If you're converting files, use foobar; it has the feature built in. Unless you really are super conscious about it, 320kbit mp3 is usually fine--it gets to be more of an issue on YouTube rips or lower bitrates compared to 320 or lossless.

I found this site, and put the songs that I downloaded through a frequency analyzer. Looks like the songs that they say are 320 kbps are!

The only ways to get lossless quality is with a lossless file (.wav is uncompressed, .flac is comp but lossless). To be honest, though, 320kbps .mp3's are nearly identical to a .wav.

There is quite a lot of bullshit about this on the internet, particularly with audiophiles claiming all sorts of bullshit about the difference between the two. Trust me, they're lying if they say it's a noticeable difference.

TurinTrust me, they're lying if they say it's a noticeable difference.

I could write a novel about this, but it depends entirely on what kind of gear you have, how the music was recorded, and what kind of background you have with these things

it's not hard to pass double blinds for distinguishing flacs from 320/v0 mp3s for people who have higher end equipment and know what audio compression sounds like, but yes for someone who has to make a thread on tftv to try and figure this out they probably will never notice the difference

your thread was basically trying to determine whether a file is a transcode or not - if you google for that you'll find more focused information; there's a really good article about it on the what.cd wiki if you have access to that.

youtube audio is awful, like at 128 kbps. 320 kbps mp3 is fine to listen to even tho there is a difference between it and wav, its not an audible one. the whole idea of mp3 is that it cuts parts of the audio that are inaudible.

that's not the point of an mp3 at all, that's the point of the 44.1khz sampling rate which normal wavs and flacs also share (unless it's a 24 bit rip sourced from SACD or vinyl) http://www.analogplanet.com/content/gizmodo-wont-post-my-comment-so-im-posting-them-here
