"Beyond the Hats" is a tf2 documentary I started working on a few weeks ago. I've made a considerable amount of progress in the process of time-lining the feats of the community, and I decided I'm confident enough to post this teaser trailer for the doc. Enjoy!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dpSqZuEjdRs

If you've been around forever, feel free to add me. I'm looking for a lot more info about the first few years of the game.

I don't understand why everyone feels it's necessary to mention "with no developer support" every time they talk about TF2. You guys do realize that the 2 greatest esports of all time, SC:BW and CS 1.6, had absolutely no developer support. Please stop thinking that the only reason TF2 isn't a huge esport is because Valve didn't try to make it one.

I didn't say it was why tf2 isn't an esport. But the things this community has accomplished are seriously impressive when you take that detail into account, so it's one I feel should be included.

The landscape has changed. BW and 1.6 are essentially dead. They had a great run, and new games with the developers behind them came in and replaced them. Developer support seems required now to be big.

To be fair that was before esports were such a big scene. Now we're having to compete with esports that have huge dev support

while i agree with your general idea (that the reason TF2 is not a bigger esport is not b/c of a lack of dev support) - the games you list were released in November 1998 (Brood War) and January 2003 (CS 1.6)

the esports world has dramatically changed both since those games were released. also in Nov 1998, Ocarina of Time was released for N64; in 2003, KOTOR was released.

things are much different now than they were even when TF2 was originally released in 07

Looking good so far, can't wait to see the final product.
Also wasn't it a community request that the stopwatch and tournament modes were added to the game?

Also no random crits, fixed weapon spreads, hitsounds, and damage numbers.

IIRC that was all thanks to enigma, but I could be wrong there.

I enjoyed watching the Smash Brothers Documentary and seeing how successful that was - I'm hoping this will be our version of that.

I have a few pages of notes that you may find useful from a similar project I started with last year. HMU on steam if you're interested.

this, valve has done a lot for us since release. They could have done a lot more, but i'm glad they maintained the game. A lot of us would not be playing it if we had never been given hats, mvm, payload, pretty much every map, viewmodel fov slider, hundreds of weapons, and made the game free.'

Thanks valve, but like, can we talk about the short circuit

I've been around since nearly the beginning of Highlander as a cup/league thing (I remember the ETF2L Highlander Community Cup, joined on the CommFT Highlander Cup. Pretty sure Enigma's team won it.), so if you want to do any highlander portion, I can help piece together a history of it in NA and somewhat EU.

The positive reactions are pretty encouraging, thanks guys. I should mention the goal of this project is to be finished by the next GXL, but we aren't sure about that happening or not.

I'm currently building up a team of people to help out with this project. Feel free to add me if you have a lot of free time over the next 3-4 weeks. The first stage of this project is just data mining through a bunch of archived content. Looking for people willing to help timeline the EU, OZ, and AsiaFortress scenes. Also looking for a few other things. If you have a talent in A/V that you'd like to bring to the table, pm on tftv.

yes that is when tf2 came out, which spawned from TFC (1999), so many new people to tf2 completely overlook that one major detail. the roots of this game...and the reason TFC never went massive is because it was overshadowed by other fps games like cs, quake, ut etc. also yes SC was popular at the time as well

It's my hope to include the games/ communities that led up to tf2 in this doc as well, that's a huge part of the games history.

i played tfc for a year roughly but never in comp, i think some of the few oldschool heads that actually played tfc in comp would be thrasher, phaser, bloodsire etc. maybe hero? i know fastfire played too but hes long gone since quitting

I'd suggest tracking down Polk, he's been around a while.

Depending on what you still need, I may be able to volunteer some basic assistance, we can talk.
