If someone was going to buy this monitor just because of the lightboost feature, I'd suggest against it if you are looking to just play tf2. It adds slight input lag, but more importantly personally haven't found the zero persistence to help much with tracking. In tf2 it's all about the approximate muscle memory, not singling out each frame. If you're running on a high framerate, you're likely getting persistence from say 2 or 3 frames, which doesn't effect hitting or missing someone

Otherwise of course having a good 120/144Hz is amazing :D I have nothing against them in principal, check out the deal!

I love this monitor but lightboosting it doesn't really make that big of a difference for me it just makes the colors all really weird and makes things harder to see in darker areas of games.

This averages out to half a frame added input lag (3ms -> 7ms) with LightBoost.

HOWEVER… The elimination of motion blur actually can improve human reaction times in situations where you are tracking eyes on moving objects all over the screen. The lack of motion blur reduces human reaction time significantly enough to more than outweigh the extra input latency, especially for FPS gaming and many others. Check out the improved BattleField 3 scores with LightBoost as an example as how increased input lag doesn’t necessarily mean worse scores. Unless you play in a very bright room at daytime, the loss of brightness will hurt your game more.

Players that stare stationary only at crosshairs at all times even during strafing/turning (no eye movements away from crosshairs), will not benefit much (if any) from LightBoost. But if you track your eyes (e.g. http://www.testufo.com/eyetracking when turning ON/OFF LightBoost), eye tracking creates display motion blur that makes it harder to track moving objects, slowing down your reaction time for these situations.

The question is very person specific: Deciding if LightBoost benefits outweigh the very tiny input lag it adds (half a frame – 4ms). It definitely does for many people, but not necessarily for everyone and every game. For example, it will benefit fast FPS far more than, say, World of Warcraft.

And obviously, your game needs to run at triple-digit frame rates in order to really benefit from strobe backlights (because you want framerate matching stroberate for maximum motion quality). honestly half a frame is completely insignificant to me when you consider all the input lag that already exists from all of your hardware anyway, and when you consider that the tradeoff is no motion blur it's a no-brainer choice esp since 144hz is so blurry as well

Great monitor just bought one from Fry's for around this price. Absolutely no input lag which is much more useful than the refresh rate.

What exact sources are you looking for? If you're talking about the input lag, I think you can do it with a quick google search, but from what I remember of it from principal, the idea is that the since the frames are being shuffled into certain "timeslots" since there is black for certain parts of the time it is only natural that there will be slight input lag. Let me make it clear though that this isn't the main point of my argument. In fact it's only very slightly noticeable and if you like lightboost in general, this is DEFINITELY something you can get over. Not a big deal at all

Wow. Can't believe I started this argument. I think that people should use lightboost if that's what they like. It's all a matter of perception. I myself don't use it, but to someone else a bit of input lag doesn't matter as long as they have a lot of Hz and a lot of frames.

Also bare in mind that in other applications, input lag may have no advantage at all but zero motion blur/persistence could help so yes, there are definitely uses. Tf2 may not be one of the best uses but it's up to the individual!

i'm not sure if "half a frame of input lag" is an accurate measurement. i can feel it. i've played with lightboost (LB) for months then on a whim i decided try 144 hz w/o LB and noticed right away that the game looked smoother and felt more responsive. i assume you've played with LB for quite some time? i invite you to try 144 hz w/o lightboost and come back to us with your conclusion.

what it comes down to is image clarity vs responsiveness and i believe the latter to be superior for the application of fast-paced gaming.

I've obviously tried both and like the lightboost more. Apart from me doing quite a lot of jumping, I also flick aim quite a bit so having heavily reduced motion blur is worth the 7ms or so input lag that I can't even notice.

It makes sense to me that scout mains, and demos that stare at the same sticky trap for 12 minutes while their team disintegrates around them would enjoy 144hz more as they are not flicking nearly as much, but then again why argue with the king of useless information.

Try both and pick what feels best instead of theorizing how a loss of 1/40th of the normal human reaction time will effect your gaming experience.

anyway I feel like lightboost is probably inferior overall unless you're a scout shooting other scouts, that is the only situation where I wouldn't make the tradeoff of having motion blur vs. not

the part about focusing more on your crosshair as opposed to enemy models is pretty accurate too so a lot of it really does boil down to preference
