Well I used to play quite a wide variety of games but recently due to time constraints I was only playing tf2, now I want to branch out again and try a new genre I never have played before and so I was hoping for you guys to be able to tell me which game is better and why? I'll be equally shit at both so that isnt a factor :)

Well, LoL is considered easier for newer players. Dota 2 is harder. League has a larger competative scene, but, at the core, they are the pretty much the same game.

Are you older than 14?

If yes, Dota
If no, LoL (be sure to buy all the OP heroes with your mom's credit card)

I imagine LoL would be a bit friendlier if you're new to the genre, but definitely give both a try before settling in

I hope this thread isn't going toward down the hill any time soon. But anyway, I'd say Dota 2, great heroes that do much more diverse things than the champions in League. The graphics are pretty great, a couple of your steam friends probably already play Dota 2, so it's easy to start a party and play with them, and the heroes are all free, thus giving you the option of which heroes you'd like to have fun with and get good at it, compared to League where you are limited to a certain number of heroes each week.

As for the hero spells being different from the spells in LoL, I(in my opinion of course) would have to say most or many of the champions in LoL are repetitive, they are like dashes/jumps/sprints and have just big burst attacks and skillshots. Dota 2 has a good variety between skillshots, slows, stuns, and etc. between the heroes, as they also have unique spells like banishing a hero, or cool AoE spells like Black Hole and Ravage that make things look cooler.

Why not both? Just try it out and just focus on the one you like the most. Oh and one tip: if you have any friend that already plays and something like that play with him just for him to teach you the basics and stuff.

I have tried both and here's what I got

Dota is a lot harder than league of legends is. It is much more focused on team play than individual play. It's very unforgiving if you die you lose gold AND give the other players gold rather in league only giving the other players gold. Now with Dota you have to protect a carry, in my opinion, in most pubs a lot of heroes will fall off late game. With league it's a lot less team reliant and a hell of alot easier. Things like last hitting and jungling are made easier. Also there are extra objectives that give buffs or extra gold. In league almost anyone can carry and te game is a much faster pace. League also offers a ranked system in which you and friend can pair up and try to climb the ranked ladder or you can make a team of 5 and climb ranked that way. They also reward you if you did well in the season giving you a skin.

I prefer league to Dota which I get my head chewed of for all the time. I feel the characters are much easier to get used to and are all different. Also it's ranked system always has you striving to improve to get into the next bracket

LoL is simpler (easier for newbs) and more people currently play. If you don't have someone to hold your hand for Dota2, you'll probably have a bad time. MOBA communities are still very toxic, though LoL is trying to clean up with the Tribunal shit.

I personally can't stand playing either game solo. I have a preference of HoN > Dota2 > LoL though, and consider Dota2 the better competitive game. Since it sounds like you're planning to suck, LoL has a pretty good MMR system where bad players play with bad players (but usually it's the most toxic there). Haven't played enough solo Dota2 games to notice if MMR is great, but there's no segregation right now (LoL has ranked and unranked).

Just make sure you can actually enjoy the game in some way.

I like Dota because I spend half of the game dead and the nicer graphics really help me get through that.

I have played both and strongly prefer Dota 2. Bare in mind that the soloqueue in Dota can be incredibly frustrating though.

started out with it, and league just feels less mechanically comfortable for me, even though it's supposedly dumbed down

kirbyirrelevant to which you should play, but didn't LoL break the 30 million viewers during a stream just recently?

that's what riot put out but several reporters are questioning the viewers since a few stream sites dont put out numbers. either way it's impressive and will hopefully become a trend for esport events.

dota2 has games that are fast paced as well, just depends on both teams hero picks, and the current state of the meta. last i saw it was in a necro book/push strat stage, which is pretty fast paced and has a lot of action going on. 4 protect 1 is pretty dead

dota has the same thing, you just dont have a visual because they don't want people to be discouraged (haha pussies) when they aren't ranking up or are low ranked

dota2 heroes are all pretty different too...

not saying LoL sucks or anything, just defending the game I play/enjoy even though I solo queue (this is a mistake, dont do this) basically 100% of the time

Maybe if I put this in tf2 terms that would be easier

Playing LoL is like playing pubs, maybe more like ugc and cevo in the ladder
Playing Dota is like playing 6's or MGE with a mix of mid/high players and tryhards
BR's or RU's are more common in MOBAs but still do their very best to ruin each and every game

The one BIG difference is that with Dota, you start each and every game on a level playing field. No difference in stats, hero choices (unless you're playing certain game types like a restricted pool, pick 1 of 3 random choices, etc), or anything like that. Only skill and teamwork divide you.

With LoL, you have to buy the new heroes that come out every so often because they're basically free wins and then you do some rune page shit that gives you certain bonuses that new players don't get. I've heard the argument that it doesn't matter because you're probably better than them anyway but that's a load of fucking bullshit. It's as if you're put up against some guy has a default rocket launcher that does the same damage but shoots a little bit faster, stacked on some other bonuses you don't get because you're new, sound fair? Fuck that Call of Duty fucking bullshit.

Also, there seems to be an emphasis on jungling in league so you're basically killing NPCs and playing your own game. Dota is all about fighting against the enemy team, if one player (probably a LoL or BR player) is too busy jungling the entire game you and your team are completely fucked. They keep nerfing jungling in Dota and any sort of NPC bullshit, this last patch nerfed it especially hard.

In terms of heroes, Dota was the first if you didn't know, a WC3 mod. LoL's original hero pool was basically a carbon copy and then they added a fuckton of purchasable cute anime girls with huge AOE slows and shit. If you've ever seen Pacific Rim where aliens shit neon colors all over the screen that's basically a LoL teamfight.

The competitive scene? LoL is a fucking joke. There's money in it because Riot keeps pumping money into it. Teams are laughable. Some teams won't scrim with other teams at the same level or have a specific team they scrim against because they don't want other teams to figure out their strategies.

tl;dr Dota is superior in every way and LoL is basically a bastard child.

DotA 2 is a great game that has a very high skill cap, with tons of interesting heroes, is very well balanced towards competitive play, and is way ahead in the client/spectrum curve. Valve is often slow to update it though, and even though it's balance well towards competitive play, playing competitive games in client without having to join a tournament/league is AWFUL. Team Matchmaking is stupid and pointless and bad compared to League's ranked play.

League is a great game that has a lower skill cap, the heroes are much more dumbed down to promote funner gameplay, the balance is very here or there with many heroes getting nerfed because of bad players, and the monetization model sucks, but I still find it fun. Honestly, it's much more relaxing and the Ranked play is nice and better than how DotA 2 does it.

Honestly, League of Legends is a great game with a bad company (granted, a talkative one at least) behind it, while DotA 2 is a great game with a very slow and silent company behind it. I play both and have fun with both.

I'm more drawn to DoTA because I played the warcraft 3 custom maps way back when on the old battle.net.

League seems a bit too cartoon-y for me and I thought TF2 was cartoon-y already.

Yea it's been a really long time since I've played Dota (I haven't dedicated alot of time since April) so I don't know anything about the current playstyle but it just felt like alot of characters weren't that diverse it felt as though almost half the characters had a 2-3 targetable stun. But for the most part I left Dota because league had more to offer to their players in the way of an in game ladder system and rewards for doing well. I gotta free skin for being gold. I never got anything In Dota for being in the high bracket.

I played LoL for the first time in 2009 when it was starting, had a terrible experience with the community and just never touched it again, tried it again in 2012 and I can honestly say it's the worst gaming community I have ever encountered in an online game, surpasses COD by miles.

I haven't touched dota much but honestly my experience was much better there
