What recourses do new tf2 players need to learn?

I accidentally posted in mentoring instead of general discussion so here’s the actual post.

I’ve been chatting with Rogue from Newbie Mixes NA about this sort of thing on and off for a while but I genuinely am curious about what players need to learn this game for themselves. I’m speaking mainly from a 6s standpoint. Newbie mixes is a fantastic first place to learn your class but what about people who are not able to make it to newbie mixes or want to learn on more than just one night a week for a few hours? I’ve thought of some ideas for videos/forum posts about learning/practicing/mastering tf2 and your specific role / class and I’d really like to know if there are any invite players willing to help with said things (especially the class specific content) and I’m wondering what format people would like to absorb this information in. I personally think b4nny’s “Deathmerchant University” was a fantastic source at first but because it’s unfinished and he does private mentoring via patreon I don’t ever see that series coming back. Anyway I’d love to hear your thoughts on this

Side note. I know very very little if not anything about the ETF2L side of this game so those contributions would also be amazing!

Honestly a settings guide for TF2 would probably be super useful for new players. Pointing them to FPS configs, fixing their FOV, key stuff in an autoexec like null cancelling movement script or a resup bind.

I honestly think it would benefit new players to know that the main reward for winning/getting better is bragging rights, so inevitably it is a bit toxic. Like the new guy who posted yesterday after rgl pugs and was smacked in the head with it

Not to derail thread too much, but I think new players deserve a warning.
It's not a horrible thing either, most team sports have a toxic side. look at how ppl get into fistfights in baseball and it's fun asf

Or just don't be disgustingly toxic? The community is so small that everyone knows everyone around their skill level anyway. It's not just random online toxicity, it IS more targeted. If some random tells me "kys" i'll just chuckle since I'll never see him again, if someone i'm forced to play with constantly keeps saying shit I just won't want to play the game.

I'm not saying don't trashtalk, I'm saying don't whip out the nft slurs and belittle people constantly (lot of people are guilty of this second one including myself). It is up to the people in the community now to have patience with new players, not the other way around.

New players also generally need to know how to ask for help, I got taught rolllouts by randoms on tf2c so idk why they can't either. I know plenty of people who would be happy to do it after the game.

Well my counter argument to this is that telling people this is something that is sort of a moot point if not negative to growing the community. Anyone who has ever played any game competitively, even in the worst ranks, knows that online gaming is always full of circle jerking dick heads. It’s kind of something that everyone should expect no matter what game they play. I feel like pointing that out would only go over peoples heads or make them think our community is especially worse than others which isn’t really true, it’s just smaller. Meaning everyone kind of knows who is an ass and who isn’t.

I agree with this. However this is more of an advanced topic. When I think noobs in tf2 I think of people that don’t even know the difference between holding passive and aggressive. People who don’t know where to even stand in most situations let alone spam. I think these types of videos help more mid tier players like people in IM - Low adv. But I do really like the fact that he teaches you how to push out of your last. That is something newer players do need to learn if they ever want to be on offense.

This is a fantastic idea and actually probably the first video I’ll make. It is something that is integral to starting. What configs do you recommend I point them towards? I’ve used a custom one for years so I’m not sure what’s best. I would imagine masterconfig is still king?

This is a fantastic idea and actually probably the first video I’ll make. It is something that is integral to starting. What configs do you recommend I point them towards? I’ve used a custom one for years so I’m not sure what’s best. I would imagine masterconfig is still king?

Hurts to say, but because of developer neglect, I think that our community is a little worse that average. I played CSGO at university collegiate level. Collegiate level essentially means that the teams aren't as good (most uni's have at most 1-2 players that might go semipro, most teams ~esea open), but it also means that the older players (college seniors, like me) make sure everyone treats their enemies with respect, like in soccer. Anyone who played team sports as kid knows that everything is more fun when you treat your opponents with respect.

The experience of "someone i'm forced to play with constantly is continually ruthlessly talking shit to me" is not uncommon in the slightest, but it in other communities its completely unheard of.

That’s fair honestly, I see your point better. Something along the lines of “This is a smaller community of competitive players than most. Some people are bad eggs but there are a lot of really amazing people in it too. So don’t get discouraged just because some goober called you bad. Of course you’re bad, you’re new. Just learn the best you can and don’t let them get to you.” Would be a good sort of warning.

players with their legacy cemented by the top100 list generally don't get that much lip, but outside of those ppl, we are fighting verbal wars to see who deserves any respect.

This is just about mindset really. Letting people get to you doesn’t really do anything useful. It’s about how you play the game and winning. Idk I’m just of the opinion that I genuinely don’t really care how bad people think I am because what matters to me is if I’m improving. Having that mindset makes for a much healthier experience playing the game than just listening to people shit talk you even though they’ve been stuck in the same div for years. I’ve been in main for most of my career but I don’t go out of my way to diss anyone that isn’t my homie and I think that’s made for a much healthier experience in the game. In game dissing is fun but in simple terms, just don’t be a pussy and cry over someone goofing on you for going negative in a scrim.

I think this should be said along with the “warning.”

Despite the age most of this information is still relevant especially for newcomers. Therefore if you could do an aggregation of what already exists you would answer a lot of the themes in your post and save you some effort on the things that have NOT been discussed about already

Oh for sure. I think the issue with information on 6s was not whether or not it was available but rather the fact it’s not all in one readily available place. When I first started I had to do an insane amount of research and forum reading that I don’t think new players should have to go through. I feel like it would be better to have one place they go to, find the topic they need help with, study/learn more about it, then move on to the next one or get back to the game. If that makes sense

When I was trying to make a team and being the leader it was quite difficult. There's a lot more to making a team than finding good players. There's the scouting and recruiting phase. My advice for anyone being a team leader build your core first. Start the team with 2-3 players off the bat. You also wanna have a good reputation so you can draw in more players to try out and also so people will actually scrim you. Think about the chemistry of the team, how well these players mix together, and how good the player's schedule is.

Good advice. Also how many very vocal players you have. You need at least 2-3, ideally more. But a quiet flank scout fragger or two will be fine. Also the fact that all times are in EST

Oh for sure. I think the issue with information on 6s was not whether or not it was available but rather the fact it’s not all in one readily available place. When I first started I had to do an insane amount of research and forum reading that I don’t think new players should have to go through. I feel like it would be better to have one place they go to, find the topic they need help with, study/learn more about it, then move on to the next one or get back to the game. I think this is actually an amazing start. This actually makes it much easier now to have a place to store videos. I just wonder if maybe some of the videos submitted are outdated. Not to mention there aren’t any real videos besides arekk’s video that I would consider a good explanation of each class and their role. The map reviews and other in depth videos are amazing though. What else do you think is missing from this site to make it perfect? Just in your opinion that is

Honestly a settings guide for TF2 would probably be super useful for new players. Pointing them to FPS configs, fixing their FOV, key stuff in an autoexec like null cancelling movement script or a resup bind.
