Yeah those are in the works for some improved spawns but at the end of the day there's no guarantee that it doesn't totally suck anyway.

I've been playing on the ffa exp dm server for some time now and I've really been enjoying the experience, I think in it's current state it's better than the regular dm servers and I would fully advocate replacing current soap dm with this new ffa version. But there's still some things that could make the experience even better.

Since assists aren't counted, any class that isn't scout ends up getting their regen/kills yoinked by the other scouts in the server. I'm not too sure if you turned off assists on purpose or if tf2 doesn't allow you to get an assist against your own teammate. If you could somehow make it so that you could get assists against your own teammates this would make the experience much better. If this is not possible then maybe make it so that not everyone is put on the same team, you may not get the assist you deserved for every kill, but at least you would get it for some.

I also think you might be able to get away with adding more than 8 players on the server by adding more spawns, especially on larger 5cp maps. I would be interested to see maybe a 12 player ffa dm server with spawns that end up utilizing second points and maybe even last points.

+1. autobalance checks happen way too often. do it once at the halfway point if necessary and dont check again until the halfway mark of the next map

The auto-balance check should just honestly not balance you if you just got balanced. I've been autoed twice within the span of 30 seconds (which makes no sense because the plugin shouldn't even check that often).

It's incredibly annoying: it happens too often, it is disorienting to switch colors so frequently, and it is both capable of happening invisibly between lives, and of killing you mid life. I am so sick of dying mid jump and mid fight for no reason.

Even worse is that balance is a total non issue in DM, both in practice and in a more literal sense. In practice because even if you're getting steamrolled, you respawn so quickly that you will still get into fights alongside your teammates, get good practice and accrue kills--and then literally, because neither team wins in DM, making the entire concept of team balance irrelevant. Just remove it altogether, please.

The soap balancer makes the servers play a lot better most of the time. The problem is that every once in a while it goes into a frenzy and isn't satisfied with the teams so it keeps balancing repeatedly. It's definitely annoying when you're the person who gets balanced on each of these consecutive waves. This is not ideal and we were looking into some solutions to keep the same people from being balanced in two consecutive waves but haven't finalized anything yet. For now we could tweak both the frequency of when it checks frag totals and/or the % difference that causes it to decide to balance. I do believe that they're set pretty much perfect right now....except for when it gets into this frenzy state. So we'll mess around with it and make it balance maybe a bit less aggressively. We obviously don't want people to have a super crappy dm experience.

There are years of 'control' experience for how dm servers play without the balancer. Often the teams would spontaneously end up with most of the top 8 players on one team and the worse ones on the other. Of course nobody would ever just manually switch due to a mix of laziness, apathy and the risk of losing their desired class slot (and I wouldn't expect anyone to). On map change, when most of the players stayed in, you would get largely the same teams because people load in based on the speed of their computers (and net) so they'd load in exactly in the same order. It should need no explanation why the server plays better when the teams aren't horribly lopsided. It's better warmup/training/fun for the best players, the worst players, and the middle of the pack when the teams aren't utterly stacked. You also get some increased variety as far as opponents you get to fight which is a good thing.

But anything I say you can just counter with "shut up. who cares. it's just dm. just go shoot people." So let me go ahead and airblast that right back at you. You literally respawn right away. Just resume blasting, dude. Getting balanced and shooting at the wrong color takes, what, 1-2 seconds? And you're upset about this happening at most several times in the span of 10 minutes (length of most maps)? So you want to forgo the benefits of balancing in order to spare yourself a few seconds of annoyance? "shut up. who cares. it's just dm. just go shoot people."

Poorly balanced teams in dm leads to the better team sitting either at the center of the map as a blob, or 2 players standing at either choke(badlands) and the worse team repeatedly taking 1/2v4s, dying instantly, and the doing it again. This is bad practice for the worse team because you literally don't live long enough to get more than a couple shots off and bad for the better team because nothing lives long enough to shoot more than a couple shots at.

I personally really like bagel in DM but lumberyard is just an astonishingly bad map.
If you remove it please don't try to replace it with something else, there's enough variety for DM maps.

Also I really hate cascade too but that's probably more just me

King of the Hill maps generally feel like total clusterfucks by their very nature. That said I think ramjam is my favorite one that was added because it's rather wide and spacious. I thought lumberyard was alright too but it definitely had issues as well, to be fair.
