I think CNN deleted the tweet but maybe i didn't look hard enough
CNN claim that they weren't pressuring or threatening the person at all, but imagine:
>be 15 year old redditor
>make a gif that's tweeted by the president, entire fucking world knows about it
>CNN gets offended
>CNN go out of their way to contact you
>tell you they know your identity and will reveal it if you continue to be offensive
And then the user apologizes and CNN claims they weren't being pressuring or threatening at all

What do y'all think

Is a news network seriously tracking down users that are posting political shitposts to reddit.
That's fucked up.

Unless the user comes forward with evidence that CNN or its affiliates tried to use his information, that they gathered against him as black mail or extortion, they did nothing wrong. As a news agency, it is within their power to dig up dirt on anyone in the public eye and reveal it to the world as "news". The public eye being anyone who gains some amount of notoriety on social media or otherwise. You would be hard pressed to find a lawyer willing to represent HanAssholeSolo in a court of law, and I doubt he could ever win his case.

So what actually happened is CNN looking up the kids Reddit profile in an effort to do a story about how this sort of content is produced (this is a fairly routine strain of reporting these days, see the Planet Money podcast about a guy who operates sites publishing fake news articles), use information everyone could view to contact him, kid shits his pants and deletes his posts, apparently surprised that the garbage you can post online can be traced back to you. Subsequently, CNN states that they're not going to expose him.

You have to have a dangerously warped perspective to think that this is somehow the evil MSM threatening anyone's freedom of expression, but paranoia seems to be the one unifying characteristic of right-wingers today, so who am I to argue.

Oh, any by the way, next time just link the whole story instead of Twitter screencaps before "greentexting" (which LOL) made up bullshit like ">tell you they know your identity and will reveal it if you continue to be offensive" on here, thank you very much. http://edition.cnn.com/2017/07/04/politics/kfile-reddit-user-trump-tweet/index.html

reakoIs that even legal? That would be brought up as harassment in court correct?

it's kinda on the fence I think but I think its technically legal

like obviously it's pretty far over the line to basically make an article calling some guy a racist over some reddit comments since it paints a huge target on his back. but technically theres no law about reporters naming names if they aren't making shit up, and thet did dig through his post history and find racist comments (regardless of whether or not hes just shitposting they can portray it as serous as they want).

the comment about reserving the right to give out his identity is where any legal issue can come up since it might be blackmailing or harassment. since the primary intent seems to just be to shame him after the dispute is (supposedly) settled, and there are obviously huge consequences for a news org to name you as a racist to the entire country. but idk im not a lawyer so maybe its legal.

regardless it's still ridiculously petty and unwarranted for them to be focusing on the guy who made the meme in the first place.

Didn't expect to see blatant political baiting on tf.tv today, but I guess that is what happens with pol goes into defcon 1. The whole situation is being blown out of proportion by those focusing on very minute details.

For those who need greentext to follow the chain of event:

> Be journalist for cnn
> Have nothing to write about, but know you write for a liberal audience, so you check the president's twitter to see if there has been anything said that you can criticize / debunk
> See a gif that the president tweeted, search to see who created the gif
> Find out that this person happens to be a massive bigot
> Decide to write an article about their viewpoints and how the president found the gif
> Try and get into contact with the creator, since direct quotes always make articles better
> Search their reddit history and find their name / identifying information directly in their posts
> Get their contact info by entering their information into facebook
> Call them asking for a comment but get no response

> Be creator of gif that the president tweeted
> Get a call from cnn that you ignore
> Realize that an article detailing how much of a bigot you are is about to be published, write a massive apology to reddit and delete all your posts.
> Call cnn back apologizing for your actions and tell them you deleted everything
> Hope, that while cnn will publish their article, they won't release your name so as to not ruin your relationships and possible career.
> They agree but only if I become more tolerant of those around me.

As for the narrative that is being pushed. There has been no statement as to the age of the gif creator, but the majority of evidence points to them being middle aged, not 15. CNN is not coercing the creator to become tolerant, just read any sentence of the multiple paragraphs they wrote / spoke in the article that was published. CNN did not use any form of social engineering or corporation influence to obtain their name. Reading through comments and finding their personal information is not what I would consider an abuse of a person's expectation to anonymity on the internet. If you want to remain anonymous, just don't post identifying information.

It isn't like they messaged their friends asking for pieces of information that they could combine together to manipulate a real life acquaintance to giving up their personal information. Nor did they use their username to see if there are any leaked information from hacks that they could obtain. Nor did they use their ip to geo-locate them. Those would be severe misuses of power that would rightly deserve the outburst they are receiving.

What this article shows is that many of the people who do post these terrible things on the internet (not the gif, things like why they should murder all jews and muslims) aren't strongly entrenched in their opinions and/or are just doing it for acceptance or because "memes."

Alberta is primarily conservative too and was Harper's home turf, so it's impossible to talk about anything Trudeau does without some baby boomer losing their shit, forgetting that when it was time for Harper to go everybody wanted him to go, and complaining about refugees and home-grown terrorists.

vox did article on it that i liked: https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2017/7/5/15922214/cnnblackmail-reddit-trump-wrestling

some people are saying that cnn isnt doing any wrong, but they've effectively doxxed him, the methods used don't matter. if they were to publish his name people would be swatting him and tons of other stuff too. if people swat and harass livestreamers and their families for no apparent reason, imagine what they would do if they were given a reason like this guy's bigotry.

vigilante justice is stupid and just ends up hurting people so please think before downplaying what CNN is threatening this guy with.

Could someone explain how a news agency finding out the name of someone who did something online in a public space is any different than finding out a name of someone who did something offline in a public space.

well for a start the implications of what the guy said aren't the same as if he were to do what he did offline in a public space, and also the internet is full of fuckheads that would do their best to ruin this guy's life over some bigoted stuff he said on reddit.

it's not really about them finding out his name, it's about what they're holding over his head by threatening to release his name.

whymeoIf you don't want to face consequences for being a racist asshole maybe don't be a racist asshole.

the prospect of an angry anonymous internet mob of 'justice' ruining someone's and their family's/friends' lives =/= consequences for being a racist asshole.

Doxing means obtaining someone's Information that he hasn't consciously provided. If your profile says "Hi I'm Steve" it's not doxing to call you steve. Learn the difference.

Also news should not be limited by the possible consequences of what they report, as long as nobody's rights are being violated. It's not a violation of rights to consolidate someone's online posts about himself and about whatever he shitposts about. News are supposed to report the truth, not that which has the least potential negative consequences for anyone. People have been lynched over news articles, as long as the news were true and the information lawfully obtained, the responsibility is not with the news network.
