GXL LAN Thoughts

Thanks to:
TheFragile for putting on such a wonderful event again. Two years in a row of this size is important, lets keep it up!

Kevinispwn for being possibly the absolute nicest guy in the world. Seriously without his help basically all weekend, I am not sure I would have been able to make it around or have an enjoyable LAN experience at all. It was nice to have someone on a similar schedule to hang out with, grab food with, help me up to the hotel room and other stuff. Serious southern gentleman. <3 u

Pinkushin for not being too upset I didn't get to hang at all this lan ;~;

brrrton for the based cheese sticks, perfect for continuing the frustration that is dealing with GXL networks.

The entirety of Jaguar's team for being bros and coming to say hi since I couldn't really go see the people I really wanted to.

Jay/Lblock for letting me have their chinese leftovers when I couldn't leave the venue Saturday because herding cats yo. Jay specifically for riding with me as far as Columbus to catch the second leg of his bus there. Having someone to drive with makes the trip a thousand times more enjoyable and I'm sorry I am such a weirdo.

DennisTheMenace/Other helpers (names escape me im still exhausted) for being available for assisting me/production for basically the entire event. I know we didn't use you guys a ton and you were hoping to do more, but having the backup and being able to send you guys out to tell teams what's up was a vital part to Nick and I being able to focus on organizing shit and not chasing people around. You are appreciated!

Dashner for continuing to put up with the clusterfuck that is the GXL network and setup. Oct 16th was national "strangle a network admin" day.

All of the team captains for being cool with last second switch to a new format when people couldn't get an outside connection even long enough to load a simple webpage. Once we got going, we banged out the games super fast, and that is in large part to everyone (mostly) staying at the venue when told and playing their games promptly. Super huge thanks to the invite teams for being willing to play every phase of the bracket one after another with only a break for memeing.

Shoutout to Turk (GXL admin) for his continuing dedication to wasting everyone's time with memes.

Kresnik and Crasian for being able to spell my name right. Crasian for being a bro.

Hidi for her help

CSGO for ESPORTS!!!

Geel for 1000$ and for being sympathetic to the shit we were putting up with in terms of poorly documented code, bad networks and not knowing which is causing an issue.

Everyone that came out, had a good time, and kept this little tradition we have going. This event is the highlight of my /year/ and you all have no idea how bummed I was when it looked like I might not get to go. This community is the lone, shining counter example to the rest of competitive gaming and I live for when we meet up again.

I know that these events are not free of issue and problem. Networks suck (we /are/ working on it I promise), nothing ever starts on time, memes are shit, whatever party was next door had phenomenally poor taste and somehow managed to be louder than counterstrike gamers. But it never really was about those things was it?

You all better come next year.

Geel9also fuck memes that are forced and run from 12:00-1:00 AM in particular and thus block good things (tf2) from happening

If the TF2 tournament had started on time at 10am, Midnight Madness wouldn't have gotten in the way. My only complaint about GXL this year was that I spent five and a half hours for my first tf2 match to start in the tournament. I don't know what happened with that to delay it so much, but it was annoying none the less. Past that I had a great time.

I cannot express how happy I am that we had the deluxe chair option this year....

wut? Matches started at 12:30-12:45.

No gamers were even there for the 10:30 start, half the teams didn't even pay until after 11. Did your team have a bye first round? Someone had to sorry :(

This was my first LAN, and I had a great time. Even though I'm essentially a nobody, everybody I met was incredibly inviting and interesting to talk to. Thanks to everyone who took the time to talk to me. I wish I had spoken to more people, but c'est la vie. Meeting friends I've had for 3+ years in person for the first time was an indescribable experience.

Specific shout-outs to:
Fragile for making this possible.
Shdwpuppet for his dedication to TF2 and the tourney to make it run as smoothly as possible.
Dashner for the hard work he put in and taking the time out of his busy schedule to talk to me. #burma
Getawhale for cementing the joke that I look like Muselk.
Ordoo for putting up with me and my dumb friends.
All the highlander buds for letting me pug with them.
Literally everybody behind the scenes putting in the hours and immeasurable amounts of work.
And everybody there for reminding me why I've put so much time into this game.

See you next year, boys.

[10:03 PM] dashner: archived #thegxl.

God bless TheFragile for running this event, giving me a spot to sleep, casting when needed, balancing all of this while running other tournaments as well, and somehow finding the strength to record a 40 minute interview for the TF2 documentary at 4 in the morning after a 20 hour day.

Thanks to Dr.ShdwPuppet for being a cool guy despite dealing with a super shit situation. I dunno how he did it.

Thanks to Dashner for spearheading production absolutely last second, making it significantly better than if I were to have to do it.

Thanks to DennisTheMenace for coming to LAN expecting to run camera but instead being the 2nd hand man on everything from running the actual tournament to doing misc production stuff to shooting b-roll to everything else.

Thanks to FrenchyTheLlama for driving home and back to get his PC (like an hour and a half worth of driving) when he learned we weren't going to have a good PC for both our casters, then staying several hours later than he originally planned because of it.

Thanks to the awesome people that gave me rides to and from the venue. I have had some medical issues over the past few months, and there's no way I could have walked both ways every day.

Thanks to the casters--Keith, GetAWhale, Gecks, Flame, TheFragile, Jerma, and Star--for keeping everything light hearted and fun. I would have keeled over at the in-game camera PC without them.

Thanks to all my friends new and old that wished me well as I speedwalked across the venue for whatever reasons.

Thanks to ravioli-can-signing-guy for making my night with the weirdest joke of all time.

I had a fantastic time meeting everyone I've ever talked to in the community that showed up! It brings me so much pleasure that everyone pulled through the event to play despite the numerous hiccups we had to get over dealing with the inconsistent internet, last min tournament changes and the scheduling conflictions we ran into with midnight madness. It says a lot about us a whole that we are all dedicated to see the end of the days of TF2 no matter the circumstances.

I came with entirely different expectations as a production noobie and left a much more enlightened crew member for future events. Thank you Dashner, Shdwpuppet, KevIsPwn and TheFragile for putting up with my shit! I know I was probably getting annoying asking to help all the time but I couldn't help myself! I think it's better for me that I didn't just get to have one job. I learned a great deal about the experiences we all have on both the production side and player side in hopes of making the future brighter for both worlds. I hope to see you all in the future at some point and to bring a more fluid, painless experience to heighten the standard of TF2 entertainment.

dashnerIf the TF2 tournament had started on time at 10am, Midnight Madness wouldn't have gotten in the way.

Delays or not, there really isn't any excuse for forcing an already exhausted production team + the two grand finalists to stay up until 3 AM so some shitty prizes can be raffled off (To clarify for those who weren't at the event, we were forced to shut down the tournament + stream from 12 AM-1 AM while a raffle event was held on stage for about 1 hour and 15 minutes. This is why the grand finals did not occur until about 1:30 AM)

I didn't think much of it last year and considered it a one-time mess up, but it really hit home this weekend to me how fucking ludicrous this whole event is. Not to mention the ridiculous network limitations imposed on us by the GXL staff that prevents us from using Arie's cheat feed and an array of other production tools that we rely on to bring the best show possible to the viewers.

A lot would need to change to convince me to ever go back to GXL.

EDIT: And just to emphasize something, none of this is directed at Fragile. He's done his best for us despite a ton of incompetency from the organizers of this event.

As a participant in the TF2 tournament last year, and attempting to help with the production this year, I can appreciate Dashner's frustration. As he said, it has nothing to do with Fragile/Nick; Nick puts in tremendous work to get this event happening, even through all the stress and health concerns.

The biggest problem on our end was the network.administration. A lot of things we needed done had to be done through the admin people, and they were busy doing things for other people. Shadowpuppet never had Mumble admin, so we never even got channels for teams or PUGs like last year.

To top off the dependency on admins we had; we were told over and over, 'production, be there at 9:30, be there on time, don't be late, have your gamers ready to go at 10.' We were there, sleep-deprived at 9:30. The network guys were sleeping in. Personally, if the venue staff did that to me at TLAN, I would not use that venue ever again.

I want to go next year, and I want to play. But I would like to see the venue staff learn from mistakes made both this year and last.

EDIT: Also shoutout to DanceNumber for your monitor:

Special shouts to highfive for being a pretty funny dude, clorg for being a cool gamer, and couch sitter for having a worse alias than me and also being the most gangster dude to have ever lived.

I'm so happy to have gone. I love you tf2.

huge shout out to kumo for the bomb sushi tho

shoutout to indust for puking in my sink and to the hotel for not hitting me with the charges

shoutout to commonpleb and cj for sharing my hotel room

preemptive shoutout to freestate for probably 'forgetting' to pay me again this year

shoutout to the hot dads for letting us tag along to the sushi place

shoutout to all the cool people I met for the first time this year

shoutout to the other cool people who I met for the second time

shoutout to the production team. I didn't play this year so I got a chance to see a little closer just how hard all you guys work. it's way more than I'd ever be willing or able to do.

shoutout to the dozen or so people who heard my name and immediately mentioned some stupid post I made on here at some point. I swear I do more things than post on tftv

shoutout to chingoo whose first words to me were 'Elmers glue' apparently because I'm so white. also thanks for fucking up my cs sens.

cu@fites I think

The best part about that was how oblivious he was when it happened rofl. My fav memory of Myles was when I came into your room when he was passed out high as fuck, but woke up and looked at me, then laughed and went, "Bluuuuuuuuuuuues! Achievement got! 40 minutes to open my inventory!" then he just passes back out. Myles, i love you man.

Pie Hero informs me he does not smoke and is in fact a pussy ass bitch.
