I need some advice.

What extra goodies can I include? I'm thinking about painting it his favorite color, and obviously the small affair of a full tank of gas.

Maybe a radio if it doesn't have one, (buying used)

What tips can you share with me? :3

kind of a vague question – sort of like asking "what computer should I buy". can you be more specific? what kind of car do you want to buy? what would be its purpose? budget?

Anything under 1000. Getting him around because he doesn't have one at all. As reliable as possible over anything else.

Doubled in radios are nice to add, maybe something with touch screen or Apple Carplay or Android auto. Also some after market speakers wont hurt. Also remote starts are incredible great for winter time to start ur car from inside to make it warm and same for the summer to make ur car cool : )

id recommend a 2006-2014 civic – typically good for 150k miles and has cheap affordable parts. the automatic transmission can be a problem so consider getting a manual. also consider a corolla or mazda3 which also has a hatchback version.

phone holder is cool, I'm using magnetic one that fits into ventilators (one like this). I bought mine from aliexpress for like 1$ and haven't had problem with it in like a year I have it. Check if it fits into the car you will buy first tho.

maybe go to pick and pull and get him better speakers if the ones in the car are blown out (v common in used cars) other than that fill up the oil, brake fluid, etc. because if it is his first car he will probably neglect to change those right away. you're a fuckin homie regardless though, i wish i had a brother like you.

get good floor mats, sounds like a small thing but they're cheap (compared to buying the car) and make it a lot easier to keep the car clean. make sure you get floor mats that fit the car, other wise this can happen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=An0YcRzDHNg

also if you get him an old car make sure to get a club steering wheel lock + lojack and etc or it will be stolen, car thieves target older hondas/subarus/toyotas way more than any other make. try to at least get a car new enough that it has a transponder key and not a mechanical one

insurance companies with OBDII trackers like metromile are good anti theft

-Refer to these videos on inspecting a used car
-Don't buy a Chrysler product, just don't.
-Don't buy a luxury car with your budget or else you'll be paying through the nose to get the stupid thing running
-As mentioned above, check the fluids and change them prior. Also inspect the brakes and replace the pads if they're worn.
-Both you and your brother should look into basic maintenance (oil changes etc) as it'll save money and you'll know exactly what is done to the car, as well as what needs to be done
-Be prepared, but not afraid of having to fix up some stuff. Bear in mind parts vary by car model and year.
-For just getting from point A to point B, you can't go wrong with a Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla. Mid-2000s Fords are pretty good too.
-You might want to have a separate budget for body work and paint if possible, it can be pretty pricey depending on the circumstances.

painting a car is expensive, i cannot stress how unworth it it would be to pay for a full paint job on a car valued at 1k or even anywhere under 5-7k. a decent wrap can be done for 1-1.5k, probably more since im assuming a car you bought for 1k is going to need some sanding/extra prep. Plasti dipping the car isnt recommended but i guess its an option. i would go the diy vinyl wrap route, its not easy though.

if nobody in your family doesn't have mechanical skills or the willingness to learn them i would suggest to spend more than a 1000 on the car if your brother is planning to drive it for more than a few years. but if that isn't an option toyota corollas are reliable, affordable to fix and cheap. if you're buying an older model getting decent aftermarket speakers is very nice because in older cars the stock speakers tend to suck

I wouldn't buy the cheapest car possible, if you can't fix it yourself. Cheap cars are usually cheap because the labor of fixing them is so high compared to the vehicle value, making them not worth owning. If you gotta buy something under $1000, get something super simple with parts that are easily to get.

I don't know what sort of cheap cars you got in America, but I know my 2008 Fiat Punto daily driver has managed to survive many miles of me driving it like a lunatic, spinning it into ditches, driving it through really deep floodwater, and driving it with almost no oil. I could have just been lucky, but as far as I'm concerned, it's pretty reliable.

Also If you want a specific colour, just buy a car that colour, repainting a car is insanely expensive, assuming you don't mean painting it yourself with a brush.

on a budget of 1500, I would personally look for a chevy prizm (rebranded corolla) an old nissan sentra manual, or old nissan pathfinder

even just 1 grand more gives you way more luxury. a quick check on craigslist found me a honda fit in good condition, 99k miles listed at $2900. that car will last until 300k+ with regular oil changes.

comparatively, i found a corolla for 1200 with 230k miles. for how soon you'll have to pay at least a few hundred more in repairs, it wont be worth the savings. a car is a car though, so just make sure you shop around and it'll be an invaluable asset regardless :)

fwiw craigslist charges money to put up listings for cars now so everything on there has gotten more expensive/anything sub 1k is usually for parts now

facebook marketplace is where u wanna look for sub 1000 shitboxes that actually run

edit: also if you're throwing a head unit in I'll add that pioneers have bad android compatibility. I can pair my phone via bluetooth but I can't directly plug it into the unit or use the app.
