Slin wrote a TFTV post about it if you don't know about the style:
http://www.teamfortress.tv/17448/keyboard-on-lap-russian-style

Recently I needed to adopt this method due to the lack of desk space. From what I can remember a while ago players played like this and often times were really good players, like squid and TLR being some I can recall. But I feel this method has died down or became less well known, is there a reason why this is? Do you still use it? What are some habits I can start with this method?

Back in the days the desk space at LAN was considerably smaller so people played with keyboards on the lap to practice for playing in LAN environment. Nowadays you get more desk space at LAN so it makes russian style kind of useless.

What are some habits I can start with this method?

Does RSI count?

I did while I was on vacation this past week for the same reasons as you. I don't use it full time as it is awkward to use for normal typing.

It's rarely used anymore. As ondkaja mentioned, it was used when LAN centers barely had any desk space. Cooller doesn't use it anymore, and he's probably one of the first people that really made it known.

There's no real advantage to using it, it's just preference (and again, if you lack desk space). I used it for a little while, and maybe 1-2 LANs where I didn't have much space. It kinda hurt my wrist after a while, and typing was very inconvenient. It won't make you better, and any belief where you think it is making you play better is purely psychological.

i quite like playing like this because it lets me keep my mouse more centered in front of me,but its really just preference imo.
however, if you lack desk space, you really dont have that big of a choice

I've been playing russian style for about 6 years, in basically every game with exception to mmos. It started due to lack of space, and even though I have the desk space now I just personally find it comfortable and its just a preference. Typing sucks because you have to bring your right hand down but you get used to it pretty quick.

Also its not as bad for your wrists as everybody here is saying if you keep good posture.

I played russian style when I played starcraft. It let me pivot with my elbow to hit hotkeys all over the board, and kept my wrist at a good angle. If you need high APM across an entire keyboard, I'd go for russian style every time, but only if you know your keys by touch.

Having a small form factor keyboard helps too, unless you've got a big lap and big hands.
