Good Single-Player Games?

What PC single-player games do you folks recommend? I seem to have played everything that comes up on lists and recommendation engines.

For reference, I like story-driven games with action gameplay. I loved Life is Strange, but that's an exception. I can't tolerate turn-based combat, unless it's action-y like Undertale. I also hate being scared, so no horror games. Also not a huge fan of stealth.

Games I've played:

Dark Souls I-III
Witcher 1-3
Mass Effect 1-3 (& Andromeda, briefly)
Fallout 3, NV, 4
Oblivion & Skyrim
Tomb Raider (2013 & Rise)
Mirror's Edge (& Catalyst)
Dragon's Dogma
Hellblade
Jade Empire
Hollow Knight
Hyper Light Drifter
NieR: Automata
Bioshock (& Infinite)
Transistor
Half-Life 2 (& the Episodes)
Dark Messiah
MGSV (briefly)
Echo
Prey
Tacoma
ADR1FT
Furi
Cuphead
Portal 1 & 2
Spec Ops: The Line

I don't like Far Cry, Assassin's Creed, L.A. Noire, Dragon Age, Fable, or Watch_Dogs.
I'll probably try Nioh or The Surge if those are any good. Maybe GTA? Anyways, thanks for your suggestions!

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

The entire series is amazing but if I had to pick one, pick up Call of Pripyat, trust me if you played through the fallout games you will absolutely love stalker

I would recommend playing through vanilla the first time but there are a ton of great mods that improve or completely change this game such as Misery, Call of Chernobyl, Arsenal Overhaul, etc.

Binding of Isaac, Fallout 2, ditto stalker but definitely do not start with CoP and rather go for Shadow of Chernobyl first and CoP second

If you don't mind anime-styled games, check out the Ys series. A few of them happen to be on Steam and are really good. I'd personally recommend trying out Ys: The Oath in Felghana or Ys Origin to start. They're both very action orientated and have serviceable stories. They're also both known to be very challenging and also have a fantastic soundtrack.

i second KoA reckoning, underrated game

I've also been getting into ziggurat recently, although it can be a bit repetitive.

SentinelKingdoms of amalur: reckoning. The combat is pretty cool and the story is alright

Completed this about a week ago, story and lore is really expansive despite being a standalone game (think there were plans for more before company died?)
Combat is similar Darksiders (also recommend - remastered editions)

Dark messiah might and magic
Batman games?

Bastion - it was made by the same company that developed Transistor. Fantastic soundtrack too.

TES Morrowind has straightforward combat but is one of the best rpgs Ive played.
MGSV is the weakest game in the series, MGS1-2-3 were incredible games, the first game is one of my all-time favourites. Make sure to play the HD remake of the first one, its a rare case where a remake is actually better (more content, better animations etc).
Antichamber doesnt really fill your criteria. Its a nonlinear elucid puzzle/exploration game but I'll throw it out here because its a game that sucks you in and definitely worth checking out.
Also the original Deus Ex is one of the greatest games of all time (mods required).

  • Metro 2033 & Last Light (amazing games, Exodus is gonna be released this year aswell)
  • Mad Max
  • Postal 2 (old but gold)
  • Shadow of Mordor / War
  • Spec Ops: The Line
  • Dishonored (quite stealthy, but you can also brute-force it, the combat and the use of powers makes it really fun)

Check Dustforce if you want to try a very good 2d platformer. Also I second Bastion, the soundtrack alone is amazing.

idk if roguelikes fit your criteria, of those I can recommend Binding of Isaac, Nuclear Throne, Spelunky HD, Crypt of the NecroDancer

Deus Ex - Human Revolution is 10/10 for me - and can be played in 'action-mode' as apposed to stealth.
Halo 1 and 2 - Both available for pc, fantastic games
DOOM - The latest one is great for action
All 3 of the recent Wolfenstein games are also great too.

spore - i loved creating my species
any lego games - your childhood toys with your favorites movies/characters is a great combo
alice madness rreturns - has a bug problem in saving the game lookout for that but the game is beautifully design and the story s amazing
metro 2033 - god graphics
dead space 1,2 and 3 - during the whole game you will never ger bored because of the jumpscares and some scenes of your own demise are really fun to watch
binding of isaac afterbirth+ - addictive and you never get the same combinations of items
any telltale game - i played their bordelands version it was really humorous and you get a lot of action scenes and characters that were in the original game; wolf among us is on a universe of fairytales characters where the big bad wolf is the detective in town; walking dead you really connect with the characters and the story is amazing

The combat in nioh is probably the best of any third person hack and slash; the combat system allows for a lot of creativity and rewards you for precise timing. The weight system is also a lot better than darksouls. Unfortunately, the story is incredibly boring and the game pretty quickly devolves into sending you to the same map 8 times with slightly different enemy placements. Boss fights toward the end of the game just become fighting older bosses you already beat but they're buffed and you have to fight multiple at the same time. The game had a lot of potential, but its pretty obvious that they got lazy or something and isn't worth the $50 imo

Other good single players steam games are:
Guacamelee
Kero Blaster
Cave Story
Iconoclasts
Dusk (if you like classic quake)
Dead Space 1 and 2 (3 isn't on steam)
Black Mesa

I've been replaying Borderlands 2 recently and it's still a lot of fun. You can do pretty much everything solo, no need to try co-op.

If you like 2D action/adventure, Daniel Remar has a neat catalog. As a bonus, they're all free.
http://www.remar.se/daniel/games.php
Personally, I'm a big fan of Iji and Hero Core. If you don't mind going a little light on the action, Strawberry Jam is also very entertaining, if a little short.

If you're a fan of old DOS-style games, the company he works for put out MURI, which he had a large hand in the development of. While I haven't played it myself, I hear it's good.

A really fun platformer I love
pretty cheap at 5€ and less during sales

Antichamber
puzzle game with some trippy visuals and mechanics
(I just saw that it's 19€ on steam currently. Personally wouldn't recommend it for that price, but I'm pretty sure I got it for less than 5 during a sale.)

Super Hexagon
catchy music, catchy gameplay and pretty cheap
not a lot of content but I think its great value for the money

The Witness
I only have this here because its a favorite of mine. Its pretty expensive at ~40€ but if you love puzzle games then the game is worth the money. Its open world, the puzzles have a lot of depths and the learning curve is fantastic. If you're bored or tired of an area you can always go to a different one with different types of puzzles but I can totally see how you could hate this game if you don't enjoy this type of 'gameplay'. But if you do enjoy this game then it will be a 10/10, every aspect of this game feels 'finished' and you can easily spend 50 hours on it without getting bored.
