What if ETF2L had a (item) paywall?

If you took this seasons numbers and if they each paid 2 ref...

173 teams x 6 players = 1038 players
1038 x 2 ref = 2076 ref

Key price is about 34.11 ref at the higher end on backpack.tf...

2076 / 34.11 = 60.86 keys

Keys are £1.89 on the store...

60.86 x 1.89 = £115.03 (€130)

2 Ref would result in a very small Prize Pool, if the buy in was something like 1 key per player...

£1.89 x 1038 = £1961.82 (€2,218.39)

So if the first place team gets half the prize pool, for winning ETF2L Premiership each player gets 5 keys!

a fresh meat cup would be really good again but well advertised, and i would really like some etf2l merch especially a sweatshirt with a hoodie with the logo above, a t-shirt would be nice aswell, i would definatly buy it.

smzimaybe admins should just approach previous sponsors if they are still interested because most of those secret names are actually still around in the scene but i guess approaching them takes too much effort #bringbacksonnyblack

why don't u ask angel instead of admins with no name recognition? :DDDD Too lazy???

I think a straightup entry fee is a dangerous idea to play with, even if it's just 2 ref per player. Much safer to open up donations instead. I know for sure at least some people would like to contribute.

Better than fundraisers or paywalls imo

We will look into shirts, however I dont know how useful they would be for making a prize pool as we would need to get them in a large enough number to be able to make it worth the time and money. Plus gauging the number of people that will actually buy one and not just say they are interested is very hard.

Just look into https://teespring.com/en-GB.
Just give advance notice to the community, pimping the fuck out of where to purchase from & a dead line date.
Once dead line date has arrived I believe all clothing is then created/posted so there may be a wait for people who have ordered early.
No matter how much is earned this way it all helps.
FYI, the 7 Hoodie I got from Teesprings is quality made. :)

ScrambledThey also can't do fundraisers anymore because they haven't fulfilled previous donation incentives.

This closed in the early half of last year, and there are still no shirts. :/

That's a pretty good idea, but I'd say that the required pure (or items) should be proportinal to the division. Higher divisions should pay more and have bigger prize pools. Have the lowest division pay 2 ref-ish/player and the highest a key per player

About the thread thing, is there anything wrong with what snack said? Sounds like a good idea to try.

About the fresh meat cup, there were quite a bit of people playing(i'd speculate most of them) that were around the scene playing lobbies and stuff for quite some time, that for multiple reasons never got in a team until then. After that a lot of them continued playing open and probably have enough games by now that they wouldn't be able to play again. So imo those cups should be spaced out quite a bit from each other so that more new players come along to fill the fresh meat div.

Entry fee is, indeed, a dangerous idea to play with, but the amount of donations, if one is opened, wouldn't be more than the number we're talking about with the entry fee itself. It would be a choice to use the donations as a prize pool for smaller tournaments though, as the last ones (the bball and mge cup) were lacking them. TFCLeague, for example, will be coming to EU only with their ultiduo tournament, and according to them, the prize pool for it will be reliant mainly on donations. Having alternative gamemodes supported by the community itself would allow for them to be hosted more often, and I'm sure a lot of people would love to increase their karma levels as well !

been thinkin about this again and im still for the idea of a paywall of a few ref but imo it shouldnt affect open players cause theyre there to try it out and see if they like it and if they do and want to continue improving and move up in the divisions they should support the league.
but yea i agree that setting up a donation service is a much safer and also viable route.

This is a good point, keep ETF2L-Open free to not scare new players away, and charge in Mid and above
i doubt many people in Mid or High would object to giving a refined or two

a experimental paywall cup would be nice to see how much ref people are willing to pay and how many people REALLY dont like the idea of paying at all.

I spoke to Stinson and Aoshi about this after they let me use the etf2l logo for my i61 shirts.

If it could work at all then I think it would only work with a self-selecting premium division where people that want to buy in to play for money can, otherwise even a tiny paywall would decimate the player base even further. On that basis the buy in should be considerably more than a few ref otherwise it's completely meaningless, it's probably worth consulting with some prem/tier 1 teams to see who would be interested and has the ability to pay (which would probably include some fundraisers).
