Asking about Soldier in DM
1

I have been playing DM few times now, and although I get fragged a lot, it's still fun mode.
I am simply just asking is there any specific style of gameplay or such for Soldier in there to make sure I actually improve, or do I just play there and improve by experience.

i don't think you should aim to have a specific style at all in mge/dm. that's counter productive to improving
dying more often than killing is expected because you're always just going to be shot in the back or 2v1'd or something like that. its apart of it. all that's important in dm is that you hit your shots the k/d doesn't matter at all.

Thanks for help. I'll do an extra focus on my aim next time when I play.
Another question; how important is movement in DM?

movement is very important. a soldier without a firm grasp of rocket jumping just ends up being far less dangerous of an opponent compared to one that does. learning to surf rockets is useful too, as it might allow you to escape unfavorable fights and/or improve your position in the nick of time

along with jump maps (VERY IMPORTANT), make sure to play mge as well. after a certain amount of time doing soldier 1v1s in mge, you will start habitually surfing rockets

I already have a basic understanding of rocket jumping and damage surfing, but thanks anyway.

I read in some other thread (I think it was Samski who said it) that the best way to improve aim in DM is to not jump too much but instead waddle around and just try to hit your rockets. This way of playing is frustrating because you won't get as many kills as you could but it does help train aim.

I feel like if you played dm like that (which is fine and still useful) you might as well play ammomod soldier vs soldier/scout. Jumping in dm servers is helpful, as much as people say it's not

You mean Ammomod(MGE) or Ammomod, because MGE variation is my favorite thing to play on TF2 already.

i tend to prefer ammomod mge, the one where u have normal hp. badlands mid against scouts is also good.

Don't be the soldier that just constantly bombs everyone, here and there okay yea sure, but try not to just hit an easy bomb on a demo every single life

jump towards enemies (like you would in game) -> take fights until you die / all the enemies die -> repeat

it will help you (a) hit follow up rockets when bombing (b) take hectic fights (c) learn what to land on when you jump (d) what targets to go for early to help win team fights / improve survivability

waddling around will help you as well but i think that you would be better off playing ammomod like corsa said if you are gonna waddle

So basically Ammomod for waddling around, and DM for full crazy. Sounds fun, will definitely do it.

I recommend finding a friend who also wants to play mge. For me at least mge is aids when both people are trying their hardest to win, but when you play with someone you like and dont get too competitive its a much better experience imo. I've got a friend who I mustve played hundreds of hours of mge with and its great to be able to use it to improve without getting mad.

Nah, I rarely get mad in TF2, nor mid if someone talks trash at me. People have done that rarely to me. Thanks for the suggestion, tho, I do have a friend who's practicing in MGE for first times, and I'm helping then out little bit.

stay outside of your comfort zone. be aggressive, initiate fights, go for every airshot no matter how far/fast someone is flying through the air. try things that you wouldnt risk trying in scrims or other matches. just remember to tone it back down a bit when you do have an actual scrim or match (unless you are pulling all of this off with confidence, then go for it)

idk why you're getting downvoted, this is true. it's pretty aids to play against a soldier who just jumps and sits on you constantly, then dies right after

i think Trotz makes the point that you arent going to improve much if at all if you just keep diving bombing ez kills in DM

Peope getting downfragged for talking about braindead chain jumping soldiers baffles me, it's the most braindead easy way to score points in dm, while effectively not actually training anything but how to bomb unsuspecing players. If you wanna train your dm where it counts, you should do less of that

If you want to be bored and just want easy kills and lots of points just rocket jump incessantly and sync scouts who arent looking at you

Having said that, jumping is an integral prt of soldier gameplay and you shouldnt just waddle around everywhere, use your rocket jumps to be unpredictable or gain advantages in certain head on fights

If you actually want good rockets on people in various situations, both directly fighting you or distracted people (this sort of situation you can't get in mge), then imo rocket jumping is fine if you're just getting to mid or occasionally getting high ground, but you really need to concentrate on your rockets. Going for more directs, thinking more carefully about where you place splash. going for splash on whatever you can think of, the floor, the ceilings, walls, other players or even your teammates.

But if you jump after literally every kill and just chain kills relying solely on the easy hp regen from syncing rockets on unsuspecting players you're honestly wasting your time. Learn to think about placing your rockets, as opposed to throwing them out hoping they hit somebody.

Even worse is if you pussy out of every fight and run after taking 40 damage like zheep said, just another waste of everyone's time, including yours

I'm not accusing op of doing this, i just think that if you're gonna do something, do it right, and dont listen to people who are just all like "lol its just dm"

One of the things that I really liked in DM is that it's very easy to learn habits or skills that you'd want to develop in-game. There are a few things that I would recommend which might help, as I see a lot of people mess up in-game when it comes to spam, taking time with rockets, etc.

When bombing, aiming for head rockets on targets so they can't surf away.
Playing mid-range and trying to maximize your rockets.
If you panic when scouts are jumping around, learn how to pace yourself and hold your rockets to hit them when they're about to land and so on.
Though I think most people wouldn't agree with me on this, there's a lot of times when I see soldiers in general holding high-ground and completely beefing their spam in-game, so I think that it's a good idea to practice taking high-ground and shooting at people below, timing it around double jumps and taking into account peoples' movement.
As people have also said, learning to shoot walls and roofs (i.e. gullywash mid outside of choke) instead of the floor is also something that DM can help you get into the habit of.

Aside from that, just playing DM normally and going for directs and yadda yadda is cool too. I did all of the stuff I mentioned and I had fast improvements, and especially got a lot better at fighting scouts. Just try to have goals in mind when playing training mods and scrims and stuff, and you'll improve fast.

pretty much you gotta find out what works for you and what you need to focus on your aim to get better really. You are only going to get better overtime though just remember that, just keep playing and youll get better. Just remember as well dm and mge servers are just a tool for improving on they dont refect your actual skill in game, I think if you remember that on use it like that youll get better. Otherwise youll end up using gimmicky styles of play to better yourself in those modes, intern creating bad habits that wont help you improve in a real game scenario
