Light vs Heavy Mice

Was going through some old spreadsheets I made and found one where I found the mouse weight of most/all of the CSGO pro players. I pulled the data in April 2016 so it's not 100% up to date, but it did make me thing about mouse preferences for players and was curious about how TF.TV felt about it.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Yzx9GpLQ1PmIlb86CrsOJlCu0_Dv7kmRLmSVyjcy0RU/edit#gid=0

I had to make some rough estimates here or there and looking over it it looks like for some of the guess work I typically chose the lighter version of a mouse ex. "for the Zowie-EC?-A I used the EC2-A weight" which is the lighter version of the EC series mice so this likely brought my overall average mouse weight down a bit.

Average Mouse Weight 94.84g

Users over 105g-------------------------16.58%
Users over 100g-------------------------32.62% (includes users over 105g)
Users between 90g and 100g------33.69%
Users under 90g-------------------------27.27% (includes users under 85g)
Users under 85g-------------------------12.83%

The common convention I've seen is that lighter mice are typically considered "better" but the average weight and considering how large the number of users over 100g is it makes me reconsider if that statement is actually true, or perhaps my data is to narrow or only reflective of games where the vast majority of users have 14+ inches per 360 and there isn't exactly insane movement going on.

What's your preference or thoughts?

I actually kind of prefer heavier mice. I know I do and other people have an issue where sometimes right before shooting you do like a tiny flick because you suck at aiming and the heavier mice for me kinda minimize that to an extent. Also I noticed that when it's a really tense game or something I find myself gripping my mouse really tight and if it's too light it almost feels like nothing is there and it kinda fucks with me

There are a couple of important factors to be considered when looking at this data. The most important probably being that just because someone is using a certain weight that does not mean that weight is their preference. They simply love the other features enough to forgive the weight of a mouse. Back when I used a g502 I liked the shape enough to ignore the weight. A 95 gram g502 would probably replace my gpro if it existed. The other being that this data does imply that light mice are preferred. Only 32.62 percent use a mouse that is over 100 grams which is the number often used to separate light and heavy mice.

Guess I forgot to put in my own preference or at least how I've felt about this.

I've been a long time use of the G400 and G400s both of which are 104g and 109g respectively, and every time I've tried a lighter mouse it's felt so weird but usually not because of the weight but the shape, or horribly click latency, or overally smoothed out sensors etc. Having just got a G403 about 2 weeks ago now I've been playing without the added weights and I even removed the magnets to hold the bottom weight holder in place I have it weighing roughly 87g now, and honestly I can't say a lighter mouse is better then again I've only been using it for 2 weeks.

I have the g403 and use the weight in which according to logitech's site is ~97g which seems about right looking at your data because the majority of players use between 90-100g and my mouse feels like an average weight to me. Might be different for people who use faster sensitivities (i.e., 5inch or so) but it feels good for me with ~12 inches.

I have used low sens (>30cm/12in) with a light mouse (~100g) and I've used high sens (<10cm/4in) with the same mouse.
I have also used the same low sens with a heavy mouse (~200g) and have used high sens (~15cm/6in) with that heavy mouse as well.
I've also used accel.
I've even used negative and positive accel at the same time (neg to counter overflicking, pos in steps for intended fllicks).

You can get used to pretty much anything.
I mean going to a mouse with half the weight meant I ended up throwing it around a lot at first, but now a couple of years later it would take me weeks to get back to being able to do fast 180s with it.

Heavy mice make me feel like there is input lag, and make me aim a lot worse when I'm really tired (half the time I'm playing tf2) but light mice on the other hand give me more of a tendency to flick or aim with my wrist, which is something i find myself looking down on for some reason.

I definitely prefer lighter mice, as long as the sensor and build are generally high quality. I use an fk2 now, an I use to use a logitech mx300 with the little metal weight removed, so I've been playing with mice <80grams for a long time now. I tried using a friend's g502 a while back, and I couldn't stand the damned thing. It felt like I was mousing with a bowling ball.

I remember way back when I was getting into pc gaming I used a wireless ball mouse for a few months since that was all that I had available. After that I was given a razer naga 2014 (a heavy moba mouse) as a present and used that until the sensor and it was okay but I really disliked the weight. Once I had switched to the deathadder that I have now I really started to be happy with how I was playing but the shape wasn't necessarily as good as the naga, granted that moba mice are known for having comfortable shapes

I use a pretty light mouse but it's directly on my desk. If I had a mousemat I think I'd prefer a heavier mouse
