i developed symptoms in my left arm like 3 days ago and it drastically got worse when i woke up this morning. i stopped playing video games for now. i wanted to confirm how long it takes to heal

google isnt giving me a definite answer except saying it lasts for months. is there a way to make a speedy recovery

don't apologize for asking, i don't think he meant it in bad manners but that you should just go see a professional, as they will give more valuable advice than anyone here could

I had similar experiences because I broke a lot of fingers in rugby. I can tell you for a fact that given your age, unless something dramatic has happened to your arms or fingers, that what your experiencing most likely isn't carpal tunnel. Reason 1 being, symptoms DO NOT come up that fast out of no where, the pain is caused by the slow and steady pinching of the nerves near your carpal bones in the hand, 3 days is wayyyy too fast for this pain to develop in a significant way. Secondly, Pain is your arm is extremely rare as a bi-product of carpel tunnel, your condition would have to be pretty severe to feel pain in between your hand and your elbow. the regions pain from carpal tunnel occurs most commonly is in your upper carpals just below your finger tips, and you can feel it alot on the underside of your palm and stuff.

ah i dont feel pain btw. i only feel the numbing of nerves between wrist/forearm and weakness in my fingers

"Phalen's sign test. You hold your arms out in front of you and then flex your wrists, letting your hands hang down for about 60 seconds. If you feel tingling, numbness, or pain in the fingers within 60 seconds, you may have carpal tunnel syndrome."

@lucrative it may have been developing before those 3 days because i lowered my desk height a few months back and i probably placed my hand in a awkward position since my arms were at an unfamiliar position. 3 days ago was when i first FELT the numbness

be careful of your ergonomics bro, posture is very important.

everytime fabric or anything with texture rubs across the back of my hands, they will go completely numb/pins and needles for an hour or so. (i cannot tell you how many times i've reached in my pocket for my phone, and then dropped it due to numb hands) i looked up the symptoms, but the closest thing i could find was carpal tunnel, and i'm almost certain it isn't that. i wish you luck friend, but don't be so sure you have carpal tunnel until you see a trained professional

I had carpal tunnel develop in college from typing papers with bad posture (a slanted keyboard on my bed). Carpal tunnel doesn't happen in three days, but poor ergonomics can cause a pinch or muscle fatigue that makes you feel numb or weak in a span of a few careless days, which is probably more likely.

That doesn't mean you're off the hook because chances are if you're developing these symptoms now you are probably at risk for other related injuries. Get a wrist (and/or elbow) brace to sleep in to ensure your arm and hand are getting rested at night. Look into your ergonomics to make sure everything is positioned as necessary, this will do more than just fuck up your ability to play video games.

And if you're curious: I caught my carpal tunnel early in its development and my recovery took 6 weeks.

Really recommend checking out Dr. Levi Harrison on youtube, he has tons of videos on stretches any exercises for gamers to prevent and treat RSI and other stuff like warming up your hands for gaming:

idk why ppl keep assuming i wont go to a doctor. of course i would go to one

however i want to gain perspective from a personal point of view as well

i just want to hear stories about how they dealt with it and how long it took them (it might have been a mistake making this thread all along)

the only person who done such a thing was #13. thank you!

get some hot packs, put them in a towel, cover the area of your arm that is ailing, after it is hot, practice some stretching and strength exercises ex: rolling your wrist, extensions, flexions, do this for a while and it will improve your situation, this will also give you a good estimate on how degenerative your disease is

First of all, obviously go see a doctor instead of relying on internet advice. If your insurance doesn't require referrals, make an appointment with a hand specialist, they deal with this the most.

Second, your median nerve (the one affected with carpal tunnel syndrome) isn't the only nerve that you can mess up in your arm/hand/wrist. Another commonly injured nerve is your ulnar nerve, so this is why you go see a doctor.

There are a few tests that you posted about that you can do for carpal tunnel. If you know what to expect from the tests and think you have carpal tunnel, you are obviously going to be a bit biased doing the tests on yourself. If you go to a doctor, they can use an ultrasound to measure the median nerve in your wrist to see objectively whether it is actually inflamed or not. The "tests" you posted about are very subjective and not very accurate.

The first line of treatment for carpal tunnel is wearing a wrist brace that keeps your wrist flat. There's tons of them on amazon that you can get for cheap. It's bending your wrist/hand for prolonged periods of time that entraps the median nerve and causes inflammation, and therefore numbness along your thumb and first two fingers. Something as simple as this is good.

Alright, that's enough providing medical advice on TFTV for today.

TLDR: Go to your doctor instead of posting on internet forums for advice, even though you sometimes get lucky and find someone with some medical knowledge.
