oh I didn't think of that lmao. Is there any news about gtx 20 series or volta happening in 2017?

Could be 11 series though. If it happens in 2017 it would be just rebrands though.
Volta not before 2018.

god i hope this is the right thread
ive been looking to upgrade and im looking for a second opinion. its been a while since i followed computer parts and what my friend told me sounded like bs.
id like to run at 144 frames so i can get a new monitor. in overwatch i usually cap around 70 but it can drop

cpu - amd fx-6300
mobo-i think an msi motherboard from like 2011 or 2012
gfx - evga 950
ram - 8gb ddr3

my friend told me i would need to upgrade my graphics first. this annoyed me because i just got it last year when my old 560 burnt out. i always figured that since my mobo and cpu is as old as dirt i would need to upgrade those first. what should i do tftv

not really too related to the thread but i was wondering if anyone here who has gotten a ryzen cpu could tell me how their performance is in TF2

CPU should be just about enough, overclock it a bit if you can.
On low you should be getting >100 fps. What settings do you want to use?
You'll definitely need a new GPU.

#2195
Haven't benchmarked it but I guess somewhere in the ballpark of an i3 with the same clockrate.
So basically the same as any other CPU with more than 3 threads. I wouldn't buy it for the TF2 performance, but it's not bad. Even the 1700 ocs to 4.0 with the stock cooler so that's nice.

I feel like the fx 6300 is something you should upgrade first, but then again you would have to buy a new mobo, new ram, and the processor itself as well, but I don't know how well overwatch does with the fx series.

AdmirableI mean I would upgrade from the ModMic to something better perhaps? Like a big ass desk mic.

Headphones are Sennheiser HD595

Yeah maybe I'll make a new thread and ask some audio nerds :D

The 595's are relatively easy to drive, only 50Ω, with the same sensitivity as the 598s. I highly doubt your onboard sound is so terrible it cannot drive them, so it sounds like some other problem, probably driver related, or something is screwed up with the cord.

Personally, I wouldn't really recommend a sound card nowadays, it's better to get some kind of external dac/amp so you wont have any issues with EMI. If you really have no budget, you could get something like an Objective2+ODAC which is a great dac/amp combo, but overkill for your cans. Something like a Fiio e10k would be fine for your cans. Also most external dac/amps don't have mic passthrough, so expect to use your onboard audio for your mic, or get a new USB mic or something. I don't really know much about mics tbh.

There's also the Schiit Fulla 2, which is completely driverless, and looks a bit better on a desk compared to the e10k, for around the same price. Personally I'd go with the Fulla 2 because it has a big ass quarter inch jack, a huge volume knob, it just looks better than the e10k.

so you're running the game 1600 x 900 or 1440 x 900 (I only ask cause that's the only way I can imagine someone mistaking 1440p vs 900p)

Total: $993.79
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available
Generated by PCPartPicker 2017-03-07 06:45 EST-0500

I linked the AB350 (non-M), just so you see the price.
The AB350M should be 5-10$ cheaper and allows for a mATX case (a bit cheaper as well).
AMD confirmed ECC and ASRock confirmed ECC as well.
http://www.asrock.com/mb/AMD/AB350M%20Pro4/index.asp#Specification
The traces should be there, but the option to enable it might not be implemented in the BIOS yet, since the BIOS have all been very late and a bit messy.
The stock cooler is good enough to push it to 4.0-4.1, after that Zen hits a wall no matter what (unless LN2 + lots of voltage).
I doubt PCM will actually make you pay 15$ for shipping twice, but I don't know how long that deal will last and 70$ is a normal price for 8GB DDR4 ECC. https://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100007952%20601190338%20600006161%20601275453&IsNodeId=1&bop=And&Order=PRICE&PageSize=36
1060 6GB is the best case scenario, if anything else ends up more expensive a 1060 3GB will have to do.

In case I forgot about anyone who wanted a Zen build, mobo reviews should happen soon and then I'll start doing part lists. Just post again here.

Will ryzen become like the fx series? Or will ryzen be able to smash intel? Just want to hear more about your thoughts about ryzen. the 1700 doesn't seem to stack against the i7 7700k, but crushes it in multi threaded applications.

Which FX series? There's two. One that crushed Intel and one that got crushed.

Compare the 6900K and the 7700K. Not working out in favour of the 6900K in single threaded either.

1800X vs 6900K would be a difficult choice if they were the same price. At half the price it isn't.
Same with the 1700(X) and the 6800K/6850K. At least the 6900K overclocks better than Zen, but even with that the 6800K/6850K don't really have a chance against 2 more (33% more) cores. That would have to be one hell of an overclock.

Single threaded nothing is going to beat the 7700K. Zen gets stuck at 4.0-4.1 GHz. Skylake-X (new 6-10 cores) most likely isnt't going to either.
So the 7700K, 7600K and 7350K are unreachable in ST. But what about stuff like the 7500? All Zen CPUs are unlocked and even with the stock cooler 4.0 GHz are doable. So as long as AMD releases a Quad Core <200$ and a Quad Core with SMT <300$ it's not looking too bad.
Crushing in MT and only losing to a handful of models ST seems pretty good, especially with these prices.

Skylake-X hasn't been released yet so we don't know how that will stack up.

BIOS are still a bit buggy which is costing Zen quite a bit of performance in anything latency bound (games).

We'll know more in late Q2.
It seems pretty even so far.

I plan on completing a first time build sometime in the next 2 months, I'll come back with a theoretical build for feedback at a later time. For now I'd like to pick out a CPU to create a build around.

This will be my first build and I do not plan on overclocking. I primarily play TF2, some other occasional games that I don't really care about frames/super high performance (OW, hearthstone, KF2, etc), I used to stream a ton and will do so again once I move this summer, and I'll be doing some coding.

I was thinking of getting the i7-7700 (not the 7700k) as I plan for a ~$1000-1500 build without peripherals or software, would the Zen be a better option and give me a better performance even though I do not plan on overclocking? The monetary difference between the two is pretty negligible, and I'm concerned about Zen being brand new without all the kinks worked out (i.e. the current BIOS issues, which are temporary but I dislike other theoretical hidden compatibility issues).

Additionally, I don't even know if Kaby Lake is even worth it over an earlier generation. I wouldn't mind spending my money on other things in life.

Thanks for all your work/feedback :]

Oh btw thanks alot for helping me around this time last year Setsul.
I get great frames in tf2 now (300-400 in busy server) and at least 80 in The Division.

Building a pc really did turn out to be easy, especially cuz the cases usually have clear instructions and markings for the parts on them; it's like building legos. Even overclocking is pretty simple. Thanks alot for steering me away from the path of buying a prebuilt pc, building from scratch was the best decision I made dude

would the Zen be a better option and give me a better performance even though I do not plan on overclocking?

Streaming/encoding. Twice the cores. What do you think will happen? Of course it's going to be a lot better.

In 2 months the 6 cores should be released then you can have your cake and eat it too. Cheaper than a 7700, but faster.
Unless you have a really good reason to cheap out and get an A320 mobo, you'd be able to overclock later anyway. I'd recommend getting the cheapest 6 core and then just oc'ing it to 4.0 GHz. Zen runs at a wall there, but up to that even the stock cooler is sufficient. Seems pretty good to me. Overclocking isn't that difficult (see #2209).

femmebrulee other theoretical hidden compatibility issues).

It's really just the RAM/latency thing and lower performance than it should get when SMT isn't useful because the windows february patch day got canceled. Windows should get fixed with the march patch day next week or so.
I don't know about any compatibility issues. Not sure what problems you are expecting.

#2209
I was almost worried it didn't work. ;-)
You mean GPU overclocking, right? Otherwise this would've been the absolute perfect post at the perfect time to convince #2208 to overclock Zen.

Okay I was trying to keep my previous post succinct without all my neurotic tendencies attached :P

I currently have (and was streaming with) an AMD fx-6300, and I had no issues with it - so I was more wondering if, for my own personal use, I would even notice the improved performance between the two.

As far as not wanting to overclock, my logic is similar to why I wouldn't, say, dismantle the governor on a dirt bike or go-kart. I'd rather just spend a little extra money and get one designed to go faster than overwork a slower version and risk shortening the life span, especially since I tend to keep my computers for a long time. I'm not nervous about the steps of overclocking as it seems pretty straightforward. I'm probably naively too cautious.

I know nothing of technology beyond the half semester of a computer science class I'm currently taking, so I'm really just learning from scratch here. I'll probably just end up doing what you're recommending..... once I grow comfortable with the idea.

I know nothing of technology beyond the half semester of a computer science class I'm currently taking, so I'm really just learning from scratch here. I'll probably just end up doing what you're recommending..... once I grow comfortable with the idea.

Even single threaded where the additional cores don't matter similar frequency with ~50% higher IPC should be noticable.

If the 1800X can run at 4.0 then so can the other CPUs. Same chip.
They are generally supposed to last >10 years and you're replacing your current CPU after "just" 5 years. I wouldn't be worried. Also if you don't go crazy with the voltage it won't fail, it'd just require another voltage bump a few years down the line to keep the oc stable.

What do guys reckon how will the new Pentium G4560 perform with tf2. Seems like an insanely good price per value processor with 3.5 ghz and 70 dollar price. Or maybe the FX series are still good at that price pool?

Well the 3.5 GHz are nice and all, but the big thing is that since Kaby Lake the Pentiums also come with Hyperthreading, meaning you get 4 threads. Due to TF2 being weird that is the highest useful number of cores/threads. Meaning a 3.5 GHz Pentium is now exactly like a 3.5 GHz i3 and performs exactly like a ~3.5 GHz i5 (i5-7400, 182$) or even i7 (i7-7700 is higher clocked though, i3-7350K would be as fast though).

So yes, for TF2 it's pretty good.

Bulldozer / new FX series CPU have always been shit for anything that needs good single threaded performance (e.g. TF2) and since they are now 5 years old they have no chance anymore even multithreaded, where they used to be at least somewhat competitive.

Here's what I'm thinking so far for a Zen build, with the motherboard and CPU cooler being up in the air still:

PCPartPicker part list: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/64wcjc

CPU: AMD RYZEN 7 1700 3.0GHz 8-Core Processor ($328.89 @ OutletPC)
Motherboard: Asus PRIME X370-PRO ATX AM4 Motherboard ($179.94 @ Amazon)
Memory: Kingston Savage 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2400 Memory ($135.79 @ Newegg)
Storage: SK hynix SL308 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($82.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Storage: Toshiba 2TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($67.88 @ OutletPC)
Video Card: Asus GeForce GTX 1070 8GB Dual Series Video Card ($404.05 @ B&H)
Case: NZXT S340 (White) ATX Mid Tower Case ($66.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Power Supply: Corsair CSM 550W 80+ Gold Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply ($65.98 @ Newegg)
Total: $1332.51

All the AM4 brackets seem sold out or not produced yet.. I'll probably wait a few weeks to see what happens

Just FYI there's cheaper RAM, even with the timings you're going for. Also better/cheaper PSUs.
The stock cooler is quite good too, I don't think you'll even need another one.

s1keare there any ryzen processors out currently that are under $250?

not yet, AMD has only released the top-tier ryzen line

the mid-tier (hex-core and 4c8t i think) set should come out in Q2 and will have at least 1 processor among it that costs less than 250

Which is the best website to order PC parts from that ships to EU? Is Amazon good or are there better options? Is it worth it to buy different parts from separate online retailers if I can find the same parts for a cheaper price from somewhere else, or should I try to buy everything from the same place?

Amazon tends to be expensive.
Well you might have to pay for shipping multiple times, but the difference can be big enough to make it worth it. Not every part from a different shop, just 2 or 3 different shops.
Could you try to be a bit more specific than "EU"? The EU consists of multiple countries and not all shops ship to all of them and/or shipping rates are different.
