Anyone like Converge? Is it only me or their material outside Jane Doe and Axe to Fall is kinda limp? I feel like Jane Doe was so fucking good because of Jake's pure emotional outburst over a recent breakup that none of their other albums can even compare... aside from Axe to Fall, which is when they brought in a shit ton of collaborators that brought fresh ideas to the table and it turned out awesome again (those last two songs have no right to be this amazing, holy shit). Anyone else feel this way?

On the subject of mathcore, anyone sad over Dillinger Escape Plan breaking up? I like their early albums, but I haven't followed them since Ire Works so I'm not nearly invested in the band to care that much.

Converge are cool.

My favorite Dillinger Escape Plan thing is the one where Mike Patton does vocals.

I did mention Human ;) My other favorite Florida DM album is the aforementioned Cynic's Focus... which is a bit unorthodox compared to the rest. Obituary and Morbid Angel are good too.

Kreator don't do much for me, though; most thrash/death hybrids are a bit too monotonous for my taste. I actually like Chaos AD slightly better than Arise...

Annnnd with this post my posts now make up more than 1/6 of the entire thread. I think I'm going to take a break.

I'm not sure why, but I can enjoy every kind of music except these genres. It just doesn't sound good to me. Not bashing anyone, I just don't understand the appeal

capnnofapnLately i've been trying to get more into black metal so if you have any recommendations I'd really appreciate it!

a sizeable portion of black metal has that classic "lo-fi" production and can be pretty difficult to get into at first. what helped me like that sort of stuff was listening to Dark Space III over and over

KratataI'm not sure why, but I can enjoy every kind of music except these genres. It just doesn't sound good to me. Not bashing anyone, I just don't understand the appeal

Maybe it's that you just don't like the timbres used in these genres(do you like this for example? It's metal but played using different instrumentation). Maybe you don't have the listening skills needed to isolate the parts of it which other people love(and they naturally have these skills in their brain); either because you've always heard very different music as a child or you aren't interested in listening in that specific way because of your personality. Maybe people have pushed it on you too enthusiastically and now it has a negative connotation for you. Maybe you've always heard specific bands which just don't sit well with you and you've never heard a band which does suit your mood and tastes. Maybe it's too high energy or is too insistent on draining your energy from you. I could think of a million reasons, but in the end it just comes down to the fact that your brain is not my brain. I get an aneurysm listening to contemporary rap music and 99% of current pop music "singers", for example.

The reason I think most people who like these genres like them is because they are what they are, and that is that; the phrase unashamedly metal describes this perfectly. It encourages you to be yourself and be confident in doing so.

You can't go wrong with the "first wave" of black metal. I think for people who don't understand the lofi thing, listening to the first wave will show you what later bands like Darkthrone or whoever were emulating. Venom, the first 3 Bathory albums, Sodom demos, Tormentor, the first Slayer album, Mercyful Fate, Sarcofago, Hellhammer, Bulldozer, early early Kreator and Destruction. There are also bands like Possessed, Messiah, Master, early Sepultura and Death that are usually categorized as death metal but they all existed concurrently in the mid 80s making similar Venom/Slayer inspired music before terms like death and black were defined.

The foundation for everything that exploded out of NY, Sweden, Florida and Norway in the 90s can be found in these bands. The more I listen the more this becomes one of my favorite eras.
