I was talking to one of my co workers who said this wasn't a racist attack since black people are not in a position of power over whites

How exactly does that work? Is chanting "fuck white people" while torturing a disabled white guy not racist?

you should tell your co worker that no race is in a position of power over any other race in america the country does not have racist laws
the best people can do in proving institutional racism is saying that its created by implicit bias' and therefore cannot possibly be proved to exist, it just has to exist because they have no other explanation that they wish to accept as to why black people are on average poorer, worse education etc

It's almost as if the discontent with the police shouldn't be excluded to one race, but rather to one other common factor :methinking:

I think the obvious retort to your co-worker is that these individuals were very much in a position of power; their victim was mentally impaired and they had a numbers advantage. To say they did not have power over the victim implies that the victim willingly submitted himself to torture, which is patently false.

If your co-worker's definition of racist attack demands dominance or power over the victim, then surely this fits the bill on that account.

Does this fellow believe the poor may steal from the well-off, since the poor are not in a position of comparable economic power? Should members of the political minority have greater latitude of action because their political influence is less than those making up the majority?

Nub_Danishthe best people can do in proving institutional racism is saying that its created by implicit bias' and therefore cannot possibly be proved to exist, it just has to exist because they have no other explanation that they wish to accept as to why black people are on average poorer, worse education etc

There's a fascinating little book by Dr. Thomas Sowell, "Markets and Minorities." It was published in the early 80s, but it's well worth a read. You can also check out this video, in which he discusses it.

The great problem in discussing these matters is the high level of emotion it induces in so many. We have come to a point as a society in which civil debate or even examination in these areas is scarce.

isn't that kind of like what the EC does (which I am against personally)?

the way the EC works is basically that each state gets a number of electors equal to their total number of congressmen, senate + house. whichever party wins in a state gets to send "their" electors to the voting whatever, electors usually being people who have served the party for a long time - it's mostly a ceremonial thingy. in the senate each state gets 2 senators, ergo smaller states get more representation because fuck you

I meant individuals. If my party is the minority, that fact does not permit me to commit acts which would otherwise be reprehensible.

As far as representation goes, fixed senators per state is fine, as long as there is some other mechanism to acknowledge the population differences of the states. The House of Representatives and Senate are prime examples of this.

This is one of the problems with the United Nations. As a wise fellow once said "I think we're for an international organization, where the nations of the world can seek peace. But I think we're against subordinating American interests to an organization that has become so structurally unsound that today you can muster a two-thirds vote on the floor of the General Assembly among nations which represent less than ten percent of the world's population."
