Started off a pretty fun to watch game, a little slow but I figured it was a conscious decision out of Bird Noises trying to secure a playoff spot. No idea why EVL chose to turn it into the shitfest that they did, and not sure why Bird Noises elected to hold on their own second when down a round for that long.

Fuck me, it's like they have a vested interest in discouraging low level players from getting better. Seem to remember Ronin doing a bunch of stupid shit at the end of last season, too.

EVL had control of middle point and was up 2 rounds they were not inscentivized to push whatsoever
bn attempted pushing in and taking mid a few times but against a 450hp brass beast heavy and level 3 sentry gun above middle it's a tough task
if anything it was just a conscious decision by EVL to park the buss and bm bird noises not the other way around

To be fair, with the amount of depth and work Rolling's single bomb from kitchen onto dingo did, I would have loved to see BN throw a double soldier through there, they would have at least killed dingo or the gun or something, if not everything, especially since they could just bring in the rest of the team off the space.

Maybe he drops, maybe he forces. Still helps open up the stalemate.
Also, 3 rockets take out the gun, could have been done, assuming they went for it not dingo if not, the space opened up by forcing dingo lets sigh with uber clean it up.

bearodactylif anything it was just a conscious decision by EVL to park the buss and bm bird noises not the other way around

Idk for the first 3 rounds or so before the game broke down I felt like bird noises were playing a super cautious game that EVL had to deal with. After that it was totally on EVL for the game slowing down.

Still though, is this really the future of invite? I mean I get that it's hard to push into the heavy and sentry, but even in EU the situation doesn't get that dire. Sentries are easy to spam, heavies are either far enough back to be avoided or close enough to be easily focused--like, if this was the proper, play-to-win strat, like Slin said, why isn't it getting used more often? The only answer I can think of it is that players don't think it's fun, but I doubt that playing for fun is more important than winning for these teams, except for maybe Circa. Watching Corsa fuck around on spy for a few minutes before giving up; seeing Bird Noises send in 1 man sacs into a sentry nest; I really got the feeling they were dealing with it wrong.

It was BM but EVL technically played 5cp how you're supposed to play 5cp. It was a well executed game. Was it what the fans wanted? No. But you can't blame EVL for doing whatever it takes to win. 5cp in its current state is flawed and that will hold back the game's future growth.

This isn't the first time that this was done, by the way. Enigma used to run engineer when holding 4th points on maps like Warmfront and Metalworks. He'd build up the teleporter and then they'd just do roamer sacrifice bombs and teleport them back to kill time.

I sent an email to the developers and I'm hoping they read it, and I've also made a similar post on Reddit with a clickbait title here: https://www.reddit.com/r/tf2/comments/5b1syg/one_of_the_worst_invite_tf2_stalemates_ever/

I'm sure they're already aware of the problem. The way I see it, you can't blame the developers for exploring timer-based options like payload and attack/defense for competitive play as opposed to trying to fix 5cp given the current problems with the format.

Maybe we should take a better look at koth as the default game mode? The only real problem we have with it right now is that we don't have enough maps with it.

Koth_bagel is pretty good and a bunch of other maps have potential. I think ESEA should cut doing one map twice and replace it with koth_bagel.

Bird noises just made a bad job of recognising the situation quickly enough when they could have stopped it developing then couldn't deal with it. It can't become a common part of the meta because it relies on being unexpected, it takes forever to set up and they should have been crushed doing that.

Also the last two times I've seen the round timer reset in a competitive match it was on Snakewater. Not a coincidence.

koth is good
the reason european teams don't do it is because afaik there is less (if any?) money on the line
generally speaking its bad manners and there's a sort of unspoken agreement that teams won't do that kind of shit (like they were going to do if the atomizer or parachute was unbanned)

The problem with koth is that so many maps have the same exact play style, whereas 5cp maps have more variance in gameplay. A lot of attempts for differences come off as gimmicky, like the old under area on bagel. There would have to be pretty big changes between maps to make having multiple maps cause a change in gameplay.

If you want to try changing the ruleset, then there's a plugin I made implementing one of the more common suggestions for reducing 5CP stalemates.
