quake lives subscription model is the dumbest shit to plague their game... people would probably play more quake live if it wasnt run in a web browser and didnt require you to pay annually for stuff that should be free.

this game seems to alleviates some of those problems so its not hard to get behind or give a level of attention to.

RadmanWtf that looks exactly like quake. why would you be excited for a game you can already play?

Dota 2 is literally just the same as the old Dota, just better graphics. New heroes, items, balance don't really count since most of that would probably have happened anyway if Dota 2 wasn't made(barring engine-related changes)

Also, I'm not so excited to be able to play it as excited that someone is working on a true-to-its-roots arena shooter that actually looks current and could possibly have broader appeal than Quake currently does.

EDIT: While Toxikk doesn't really look as fun to me as Quake/TF2, I'd totally get behind it if it were to bring back a glorious era of arena shooters. Same goes for all the other "Quake-clones" floating around the near future.

This game looks very promising to me, games like Quake (or reflex) do sometimes put themselves in a bit of a difficult situation by making the skill ceiling really high at the get go, I can see this game being really friendly to new players but also keeping a relatively high skill ceiling.

I felt like with Quake getting and breaking to the top is very difficult unless you have been playing the game for so long because of how high the ceiling is.

This looks like a Quake/Halo 2 cross over which is very appealing to me.

dota was a mod though, which couldnt reach its full potential because it was restricted by the wc3 engine. Dota 2 has tons of improvements to the experience over the original dota.

That's besides the point, which is - a modern visual(and accessibility) re-design and some crafty Valve marketing was all it took to elevate Dota(and subsequently MOBAs) to a household name in competitive gaming.

I'm simply hoping one of the upcoming arena shooters will either trigger something similar or be a catalyst for the long-awaited saviour of arena FPS games.

Uh, no. Like Starcraft, Dota was already hugely popular. They both revitalized an outdated but still popular game. Quake, and more specifically CPMA has a much MUCH smaller following.

I'm not saying you're wrong and that this won't make Reflex a "household name", but I highly doubt it.

Also, while Valve is a big name and contributed to the success of Dota 2, Reflex is being created by a small dev team with little to no exposure besides an extremely slow subreddit and a minimalistic website. While Blizzard/Valve can use their marketing to get people that didn't otherwise play SC/Dota to get interested in their games, the people looking forward to Reflex are old Quake players that are actively looking for quake-like games.

Are we pretending LoL wasn't already immensely popular at the time? And HoN as well, to an extend. People play mobas because they like it, that there are modern games in this genre definitely does help, but the thing keeping people from playing cpma/ql/warsow/xonotic is the gameplay itself. All something like reflex is going to achieve if it keeps being such a copycat is to fragment the player base even further.

But anyway, I'm hoping this game, if not the others, ends up actually doing well.

Quake: Halo Edition. Definitely keeping tabs on this, looks cool and fun. 15 shekels is a pretty good price, too, assuming the game is as good as that video seems to make it look.

pretty sure you can just tweak your graphics so its easier to see and track folks, like any other game.

Their FAQ makes them see like they played the previous arena shooter games like quake and ut. They had a couple references.

I highly doubt they're gonna clutter it up too bad

Ahh, brings me back to my UT and Warsow days.

Realistically though, unless this game does something to help new players understand/improve, it will be DOA like every other game in this genre. The learning curve just ends up being too high, and new players feel alienated quickly.

Here's to hoping they (or anyone else attempting this genre still) can pull it off.

looks pretty cool, i like how theyre creating something new, and not just copying for example the quake movement style. I think the dodge and double jump combination will offer great movement, altough it looks like its gonna be pretty easy to dodge projectiles

The movement looks good in terms of speed, not liking the Unreal 4 effort so far as the movement looks really sluggish, this looks smooth and still has some room to perfect the movement.

The only thing that I'm not sure of with this game is performance so far.

I feel like this movement system lacks the fluidity that is required to make an arena shooter "feel natural" in my eyes.

Maybe it's something one has to try out themselves, but the sudden stops look bad.

from what it looks like they're mirroring their movement system after UT, not quake

rockets fire at hitscan speed, can one shot players, and have a good amount of splash and picking up weapons (including rockets) have no spawn time so there's no like "harder to get" weapons on the map

if they change how weapon spawns work or weapon locations or nerf rockets significantly this game would be 10x better. still fun overall

probably not but i don't see how that changes that 100 dmg rockets that fire at lightspeed are a lot stronger than any of the other weapons
