coming in hot, although Aoshima said most of what I was thinking

in many cases, I agree that people take their hatred for political figures to too much of a visceral, violent place, wishing physical harm on them and whatnot. however, it's not our fault that lifetime appointments lead to morbid discussions such as these. criticizing people for being happy that we have a chance of getting a supreme court that consistently votes 5-4 for progressive causes instead of 5-4 against, because of the human life that had to be lost for that reality to happen, is as inherently politically loaded an action as those people expressing happiness. if Scalia had simply retired (which he would've never done under a democratic president btw), that would've been a win-win. but at the end of the day, I don't think we need to let the standard obituary lines of "he was so charming and funny and him and Ruth Bader Ginsburg were BFFs" obfuscate the fact that he did a lot of damage in social and criminal justice issues.

AvastRhettroMrFahr3nheitare people on this forum actually happy someone is dead because they had an opinion they didnt like?

or am i being goofed on

I'm not glad he's dead, no one deserves that.
But he did say that it's totally fine to kill innocent people, which makes it super hard to pity him.

If you want any evidence, please read the news article I linked.

I'm afraid I have to agree with Sheepy on this one.

Even if I didn't like Scalia he was right on this point as inadvertently innocent people will be punished and it is not unconstitutional.

luckily there are several other reasons why the death penalty is unconstitutional

RhettroScalia has accepted the fact that the justice system is not perfect, and innocent people will be convicted. “Like other human institutions, courts and juries are not perfect,” he wrote in a 2006 opinion. “One cannot have a system of criminal punishment without accepting the possibility that someone will be punished mistakenly.”

Would like to add that its very ironic how this judge who is for the death penalty (if i'm not mistaken) unintentionally gives one of the strongest arguments against the death penalty. Even the smallest chance of a totally innocent man being murdered by his own country should be enough to get rid of it.

that's one, the other being the huge racial/class disparity in who actually gets the death penalty in relation to the equal protection clause of the 14th amendment

if more justices were willing to use disparate impact, (aka scalia's replacement), you could easily see that being factored in in the futre

eeeobama gets to appoint a new justice!
GOP senate will obv block his appointments but with the way the winds are blowing against the GOP rn it could be a bad move to make for them!!!

Obama can't get a Governor of the US Postal Service confirmed there's no chance in hell the he'll get a Supreme Court Justice confirmed in the next year.

sacthe death of crappy singers like David Bowie who was massively overrated, noone listened to his crap of this generation till he died of AIDS LOL.

The only thing that died from aids was your grammar apparently.

Seeing how a lot of David Bowie's music/albums made it into the top 10's when they were released, you can't really say that "no one" listened to him.

(Ik I'm feeding a mongo troll but still...)

oh no i forgot a space in no one, report it to Interpol, if that is going to be the brunt of your post against a non native speaker making an ironic post, you acnowledge i'm prolly trolling and still you give a retarded defense of David Bowie that shows you have no reading comprehension and can be countered by saying that the only Billboard 200 album he ever had, was the one that came out with his death proving my point, people only "care" about some artist legacy, when they kick the bucket. at least he was rich during his lifetime, and not a deadbeat with one ear, like Van Hogh. And he prolly did die of AIDS considering he was mick jagger's fuckboy.

AoshimaSee, I think there's a disconnect here.

I don't think people are actively happy that this person has died. I mean, there are people I hate, but I don't really want them to be dead, you know?

However, since Supreme Justices serve for life, dying is the only way for people who are affected by Scalia's conservative politics and judgements to be free of his authority.

So when people are like "yay! he's dead!", they're not necessary happy that he died, instead they're happy that he doesn't get to have a say in one of the most powerful legal institutions in America with a political viewpoint that is very conservative.

I mean okay some people are probably happy that he's dead, but I think that the majority of people are instead happy that he no longer has his position, and due to said position, the only way for him to be gone is, well. Him to be dead.

You may also voltunarily resign from the Supreme Court in case something comes up that may permanently influence your duty. For example, dementia or Alzheimer's.

Ars Technica has a pretty good writeup on some of his more recent supreme court decisions. Especially those regarding personal privacy.

http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2016/02/through-the-ars-lens-looking-at-justice-scalias-opinions-dissents/

with acception to his reaction to gay rights issues what's laid out in the article seemed like a perfectly reasonable person who upheld the rights of the people the majority of the time.

Avast idiot

Has it occurred to you that I might understand what you're trying to say about being glad he's gone, but chose not to believe thats what everyone who posted that they're glad he's dead actually thinks, especially when they post things like "I'll celebrate his death just as much as I'd celebrate the death of a horrible dictator."?

But by all means start using insults for no reason straight away just because I disagree with celebrating someone dying because you don't share his views, it only further proves my point. Of course you're allowed to disagree with his views, and I'm allowed to think its vile when someone posts something like that in a thread about a human being dying that isn't an evil shit.

Downfrag me all you want but Sheepy is actually right this time.

There's your literal quote, page 1

And yes, plus frags on a video game forum is my entire motivation for posting my opinion on someone's death, how else am I going to find self validation???

Ok I concede i forgot about that because I thought it was stupid. You have me on that one point and I understand where you're coming from because that is a straight up retarded post from Royce.

But that one retard does not invalidate the rest of my post or the point I'm trying to make.

Also regardless of my other posts the majority of the posts on this thread are not celebrating his death, they are just happy he's off the SCOTUS. So I hope you can understand.

I don't think we need to argue because I understand and agree with your viewpoint, I just think we just got off on the wrong foot and have slightly different views on the matter. So I think we can abandon this thread now.

It's ok, glad we cleared up the misunderstanding. All good.

With my initial post I wasn't just referring to what was posted here solely, my facebook feed is full of people who supposedly preach tolerance, acceptance and inclusion being glad the man died solely for his views. I just think that doesn't make any sense. That's not me trying to take a moral highground or play a victim over differing opinions. That wasn't the impression I was trying to make.

it's also important to note that Scalia's conservative opinions are less "i hate the gays and want them to suffer" and more "it isn't the court's field to decide these things" due to his staunch belief in originalism
