Are they still only on Fridays? I'd be down to do some coaching but I'm working both Friday nights in the coming two weeks.

I think it's a bit dumb that i'm not allowed to play NMs anymore because i'm playing in open.
But whatever.
According to randal i'm "graduated" now.

oh yeah we need some coaches

I don't think it's dumb, if you're in open you've hit a point where you're going to get the most benefit from scrimming and working w your team and a mentor, it opens a spot in mixes for newer players to get more experience as there are usually a number of people who have barely heard of comp tf2 and never played it. If you're committed to open, you should be graduated.

Hi, I read and understand that those that "graduated" via playing on an open team this season are no longer eligible to play in the newbie mixes, however I am a bit of a difference situation.

Unfortunately, after a lot of effort on my and one other teammates' parts, our team collapsed (we lost 3 members and ran out of time to replace them), thus I'll be missing out on this season sadly.

I was hoping that I could play in mixes until the next season of whatever tournament comes around? I started playing in December and found mixes really useful, and I still have a deeply vested interest in improving. If not, I totally understand that mixes get crowded and such - but could you point me in the direction of somewhere else I could go to try and improve since I won't be playing in the ESEA this season?

Honestly you don't need any more noobie mixes than a few weeks - the rest is up to you. The issue is that the people you're playing against in noobie mixes ought to have very little experience and so they won't press you to improve in any meaningful way. I don't claim to speak for the noobie mix organizers though so it's up to them.

The way *things* used to work, is you'd go into a website like www.tf2center.com and play there. Make a few friends, play more centers with them (we called them lobbies HEH) and then make a team with them and play next season.

Or, alternatively, you could make a thread in the recruitment section and try get on a team which may be forming for next season already, or get picked up by a team in need, or ask to be a sub and get to play every once in a blue moon, and you'd get to hang out with players who were making their way through comp tf2. You could also do the same for a UGC team - I'm sure there are plenty of UGC teams currently that need starters and back-ups.

Also to shamelessly self-promote my youtube channel www.youtube.com/medimarx has lots and lots of stuff geared towards teaching players how to play TF2 somewhat. As folks who've done my mixes can likely confirm, you'll get the same there as you will from me live and in person - I'm a sound board basically.

You could also check out: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLD098F81F2CA74F00 which has some really classic videos from some of the best folks that've ever played the game.

Nah Marxist, you right. I suppose I can't speak for how Kevin wants things done in NM anymore, but the way generally should work is newbies "graduate" after like 3-6 weeks of playing mixes. That graduation isn't from playing open or even because they've learned all they can from mixes.

A significant problem with comp TF2 is how disconnected it is from pub play. This makes it really really hard for a casual player to make the jump to comp, as it's a totally different game than what they've been playing. Newbie mixes help pub players learn the very basics of the game, while also making friends that they can continue to play comp with. Newbie mixes (hopefully) gives new players the chops to kick it in #tf2mix (whatever the equivalent to that is rn) or newbie PUGs. After they've got their first pair of comp shoes, it's best they move on, because they've reached the level of diminishing returns where they can learn a LOT more by playing elsewhere.

@ZooeyG, newbie mixes won't help you improve the way you want it to. I'd recommend playing in newbie PUGs or whatever the popular PUG system is right now that isn't TF2C

Obligatory post just to say that newbie mixes are not associated with these pugs in any fashion, so please keep the actual mixes as a learning environment and not some place to come and fuck around. We will ban you.

I think all of this talk about when we should graduate people and people wanting to play long after they have nothing left to learn stems from what I perceive to be the biggest fatal flaw inherent in the design and intention of newbie mixes.

Fundamentally, the newbie mix setup is incredible. We get experienced coaches, many that are either experience pedagogues or have some knack for the art. The mumble atmosphere is one of mandatory kindness and positive influence, negativity is one of the few instantly bannable offenses. Education is the constant focus, and questions are answered to the nearest completion possible by experienced players and students of the game. People come, make friends, enjoy the friendly atmosphere, get their learn on in a fun environment...

and then don't want to leave.

I understand that. Good positive communities, especially for the lesser skilled and unconnected are rare, if any exist at all. But the problem is we get the same names week after week, month after month, long after they have nothing new to learn. I keep a notebook of every mix I coach to help with continuity of education and some of the newbies appear a dozen or more times. At a certain point in time, its like a 4th grader sitting in with kindergarten. Sure they aren't ready for calculus and studying Marx, but they are a bit beyond counting to 10 and learning to colour in the lines. So we have to graduate them, not because they are a nuisance, not because they have nothing left to learn, but for the same reason that we have to graduate people from elementary school.

So newbies, please don't be offended or hurt. There are better ways to spend your time. If I have personally graduated you, its because I honestly believe that your time on Friday evenings would be better spent playing real games, reviewing demos or taking a break. If you aren't on a team, find a team. If you cant play on a team due to time, be a pugstar for all I care.

Coaches, please let me or another admin know if there are newbies who don't need to be there anymore.

For fuck's sake guys, graduation is a good thing. You have moved beyond the bare minimum needed to know to play the game competitively. Now go learn more advanced things under the auspices of a mentor or a team.

No. Newbie mixes is about learning the format, not a class. Sorry!

Hey guys. We just made a post over at the TFCompetitive group. We expect that we'll need a few more coaches than normal as a result of that, and we'd really appreciate you being there tonight.
