Unlearning Movement

So I was trying to learn manual ctapping (I use a meh script currently) and I got a jumper to help me, but he says he can't help because of my odd control setup. Apparently I play with my movement hand in a weird way:
- pinky on A
- ring finger on W
- middle finger on D
- index finger on F
(I use SHIFT to crouch, also with my pinky)

He said if I learn to use normal movement keys, my hand will be more flexible and I will become better at jumping. I've been trying to do jump maps/pubs with the standard setup but I just can't; my pinky tenses up, I constantly forget where my fingers are on the keyboard, and I can't do basic things like letting go of W when jumping without thinking about it.

How can I unlearn my old habits and readjust?

if you don't have to adjust then don't
if you use wasd and f is non-essential bind crouch to f or like g or r or something you can press with your index finger

As long as you can control your movement keys separately from your crouch and jump keys there's no reason your setup shouldn't work. I personally can't do ctaps without my crouch being bound to mouse2.

Just keeping using the new keys if you really want to switch. That is basically it. Break the old habit and bring in the new by force. Stretch your fingers, they might tense up less in general. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EiRC80FJbHU

Can you walk left while crouching?

Now to break your old habits you'll have to force it, I'm afraid.

bind space to crouch and m2 to jump or something and u can keep the rest of your movement keys the exact same and u can still do any combination of movements u need to strafe+crouch crouch+jump all 3 etc

How to learn new habits:
Do them
Keep doing them
When you don't do them, do them instead
Repeat

Seriously, there's no fucking trick, just do it instead of asking how to do it.

I use F for inspecting, as part of my ctap script, and to fake ubers.

I can crouch and move left by holding SHIFT with my pinky and moving my ring finger from W to A.

I'm not sure if I have to change, but my ctap teacher says it's a requirement to really improve my jumps.

p.s. if you can make me a pro jumper please hmu

I will try some alternative mouse2 binds, thanks for the suggestions.

I use a similar config- I use ESDF for movement, with my pinkie on A, which I've got bound to crouch. I also jump with mouse 2.

Try switching to ESDF for movement with crouch on A. It might help.

if your only goal is to learn ctap jumps then an easy way is to bind crouch to right click

I remember when I used to do this. I thought that was the right way because it's how your left hand is setup when typing. For changing, you just have to deal with learning how to move again, I don't think there's any way to make the transition easier. Resurfed has bhop servers now so maybe that can help?

And yeah holy shit eric how are you so good even with your current setup, I am genuinely amazed.

FWIW I use almost the same setup, with index finger on C for crouch instead, and have no issues jumping. This setup is a bit weird but does allow crouching and hitting strafe keys without moving fingers, something that could be limiting you in jump maps. Might be worth giving it this a go if you are determined to change but can't deal with a 'normal' setup

Rob123FWIW I use almost the same setup, with index finger on C for crouch instead

yeah i was gonna say if you used F to crouch and put your utility key on like R or C or something there's not too much wrong with your hand position. your pinky will never be as strong or dexterous as your index so it's probably slightly better on crouch for most people, but you shouldn't be too badly off

i use my palms to hit ctrl in tactical shooters but doing that in tf2 sounds ridiculous

Still not as bad as tox.cfg.

mouse1 +forward, mouse2 +back, z left, x right, space jump, c +attack. Doesn't put pressure on the mouse in an LG fight.
