Hey, I'm starting a new job for the summer before I go off to college. The job is in a shipping warehouse for HP computers and it's just going to be me working in solitude for eight hours each day doing relatively repetitive tasks. The job isn't really difficult, and it's even harder to mess up so I'm trying to figure out something to do while I'm on working. Was wondering if anyone has everyone done something similar and has any tips.

No

Edit: The job is essentially me making sure a box has all the required components, packaging it, putting packaged boxes onto a cart, scanning them, and placing them in the shipping area.

One of my friends has a similar type of job working for Caterpillar. He listens to podcasts and audiobooks the entire time.

He recommends this one.

I'm a big fan of going over all the ways my everyday actions could go wrong.

I also spend a lot of time remembering situations where I was really uncomfortable.

But I think my favorite activity is wishing I could go back in time and not fuck up my whole life with every action I've taken since 5th grade

Podcasts. Hopefully they let you use headphones. If anything get earbud style headphones that don't block out sound (like stock apple earphones) so you can be fully alert and pull them from your ears quickly if there's something that requires your undivided attention.

I play a game in my head where i come up with a category, for example countries, then I try to chain items that belong to the category, so that the first letter of the new one is the last letter of the old one (Afghanistan, Nepal, Laos...) and see how long I can go without repeating one.

Take a really close, mental picture of something and imagine it in your head
Try to figure out its structure, what each individual part does, and why it does that
Think of ways you can improve on that and make it more functional / efficient as a whole

Think about a conversation you're having with someone, and try to create an accurate recreation of their reactions / body language
Now try the same scenario except with you trying out different conversation paths and different reactions
Compare the reactions and figure out what went on in both of your heads that lead to whatever the conversation ended on

I practice counting and thinking in spanish but you can do this for pretty much any language you want to learn. Its amazing how much you can learn and retain just by practicing some basic vocabulary and conjugation over and over.

If you don't want to be practical, you can imagine that you are in a reality TV show where you are constantly being watched. You become very self conscious of every little thing you do very quickly.

If you want to be morbid you can imagine your own funeral and try to figure out who would go to it and who would cry or even be happy.

shruggerDan Carlin has a great history podcast that has built up many hours worth of content to listen to

It's the one podcast that's 100% worth paying for to get the whole back catalog

Other great free podcasts include My Brother My Brother and Me (or really any McElroy brother podcast), Invisibilia, Fresh Air, Serial, Oh No Ross and Carrie, and Stuff You Should Know.

I go over and regret all the weird shit I did in high school, and end the day being happy I moved away and lost all contact with most of those people.

I spent two summers in college mowing grass. I'd be on the mower for eight hours some days. I didn't listen to music or really have any plan for occupying my mind, but I had the advantage of being outdoors and enjoying all that. I think after a while you learn to just not think about the time passing. Playing the "three more hours till I'm off" game isn't fun. Just take it five minutes at a time.

I work at a warehouse packing groceries for markets. Music players are banned cause of safety. I usually just pick songs and kind of half sing and half humm them in my head and try to remember the lyrics. The upside is I have something to think about. The downside, well, just imagine having Justing Beiber - Baby stuck in your head for 4 hours straight.
