Twitch chat mod guide

TF2 streams are growing pretty quickly these days, more sub buttons, multiple streams with 50-100+ viewers the chats are getting busier and while TF2 chats are generally pretty decent I've seen some become absolute aids. To that end, chat mods might need to learn how to deal with it on a more serious level.

This is a google doc put together by an admin in ProfessorBroman's stream (twitch.tv/professorbroman, popular speedrunner) called TheAngryPanda1, a really useful reference on how to handle chats hitting 500/750/1000+ users regularly.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/13k6Tx8iBXtrmcIeypWUgTdA6kXc60_kcpLjbfCvWnZs/edit#gid=0

Somewhat on topic as well, one thing I notice is that issues in TF2 chats are very rarely dropped. If the streamer/a mod says the chat isn't going to talk about that topic from now then respect that and don't try to undermine other mods.

We don't need a guide on how to moderate, streamers have to not be fucknuts and pick people to be mods that are trustworthy and actually read chat. Honestly, if you make people mod and they don't moderate your chat well enough, find better mods or don't be surprised when your chat is awful.

Every streamer has a different tolerance for how much dumb shit they can handle, so find mods that understand that limit and you're set. No guide necessary.

You can't completely police the internet yo, raise your dongers

It doesn't need to be, you can go look at some streamers like Broman and their 1000+ viewer chats which are more civil than most TF2 chats I've seen.

Like I said, it really doesn't need to be. What would you rather people see when they find a TF2 cast for the first time, discussion about the game or donger spam shit talking someone on the team?

The guide makes being a mod seem like a job. The reason there are so many poorly moderated streams isn't because mods don't know how to moderate, its because the mods are chosen poorly. Half the time mods aren't paying attention or even watch the stream regularly and the other half the time they are actually doing everything your guide says because its so trivial and intuitive. Moderate links, start/be active in conversation, ban/timeout spammers and people posting trade requests. Anyone else being a flagrant asshole is at the broadcasters discretion. If you don't care if people call you bad or flame people in the chat, that's up to the broadcaster.

chat will always be a shit hole of spam and nonsense, even with good moderators. You can only do so much when there is an anonymous horde of nerds that can say whatever they want with no real consequences.

foster's really nailing it for the most part. Certainly there will be certain channels that are intentionally targeted moreso to mature adults, and some that are more for younger children, but the shit chatters are universal no matter what.

I read the linked document and it seems to be a long-winded, channel-specific way of saying "Here's who we timeout and ban here and why, be consistent." but for the most part, it seems like common sense.

We can't re-program the trolls or make them stop except by timing out or banning. There's not much else to say. Each channel has their own philosophy and rules.

I'd be shocked to find a decent twitch chat for any game. Do you really think anyone who uses twitch often is going to look at a tf2 twitch chat and recoil in horror? There is a video game literally playing itself a centimeter to the left of the chat box. ffs, half of EVO's chat is just the salt twitch icon and the other half is people actually typing out the word "salt" and they get crazy viewer numbers.

Honestly, I respect the fact that you or whoever actually took the time to write out this guide but its not something a lot of people are in desperate need of so don't be surprised when you get some bad feedback. Mason is right, if you aren't smart enough to know how to moderate a chat, then you shouldn't be a mod, its exactly is simple as that.

despite the fact that i have a minimum level of moderation, i'd like to think my chat (usually with 60+ people watching) isn't aids.

i try to interact with people if they ask a question (who is the guy on the left side?) i also try to throw in nice memes, but i don't know why or how it happened, but my chat seems (in my opinion) to be not completely retarded, while other peoples (b4nny's comes to mind) are aids.

maybe they see how dumb I am and figure it's no use trying to shit up the place

Hello everyone, I'm the one that made that gdoc.

Let me be very clear in that it is definitely NOT a guide unless you want your channel like Broman's is.

That being said, the only reason it exists is because I was asked to make it by people in Broman's chat because they were curious, so I did. The reason it sounds like a job in the guide is because it actually was my job for about 4-5 years in the past for a rather large clan/community that spanned about 20 or so different games. So yes, I do take it "very seriously" and yes, it is one of many hobbies for me. Others involve engineering stuff, cars, and tinkering/inventing things.

Foster indeed hit the nail on the head for sure about what an actual guide would look like. It would basically just be the statement: "Make a bunch of people that share the same idea as you for chat your mods, then make sure they can work together properly, and after that's done you just need to adjust things as the channel grows if needed." That's literally it for a guide, because things become to variant after that and it's fairly pointless to try and encompass everything.

Anyways, just wanted to pop in and give my own view on it and mention why it was made, not that it overly matters.

e: Also, for what it's worth, Davidthewin was just trying to help people out. There's really no need to jump on his ass about it. All that does is make people not want to help anymore. :/

Honestly when I'm watching a cast or pretty much any stream with over 200 viewers I don't even pay attention to the chat. It's better for your health that way.

I don't understand why everyone jumped on this like its the devil.... For the most part Tf2 streams have total ass moderation, not that we need much because it is a tighter community and we all kinda know what to expect from it but it would be nice to at least have a decent background on how to do it well....
