As the title says, really. I'm looking to expand on what I listen to but in the general genre.

Usually I listen to stuff like:

Joy Division
The Smiths
Sex Pistols
Ramones
Bloc Party
Led Zeppelin
Modest Mouse
The Strypes
Radiohead
Arctic Monkeys

And a whole lot more :p.

Much appreciated and if anyone likes to discuss music they're free to add me :3

Do what he said. It's a lot easier. I did that a couple years ago, and since then last.fm suggested me some pretty cool bands

Make a Spotify radio station with any of those artist. I usually find 1 or 2 new artist I like a day just by doing that.

A couple you might like anyway;
Postal Service
Pulp
Animal Collective
Vampire Weekend
Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti
Fleet Foxes
Beirut

Use spotify or last.fm as suggested before and get suggestions from there.

Spotify radio feature is amazing and I have discovered dozens of great bands thanks to it, nowadays I have my personally curated playlists but when I first started on spotify, the radio feature helped a lot.

Last.fm is cool too but I use it to scrobble from spotify mainly

I've noticed from reading this thread that nobody has suggested pandora. i dont really use these whole "internet radio / music" services but is there a reason why people prefer last.fm to something like pandora?

sorry if this questions kinda off topic

As a former Pandora user that moved to Spotify, it's the flexibility in the service itself. Pandora is strictly radio based with no playlists or song specific selections. It's simply an outdated and one trick pony service.

Thanks for the suggestions, didn't realize I'd get this much feedback!

@highfive: I listened to it when it came out an was highly disappointed. Other than that I do adore the Strokes.
@GTSBY: anything after Odelay by Beck worth trying?

I like looking at B-sides of bands I already like, such as The Strokes, to find new music to listen to. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tIzk4uojkmk

the Red Hot Chili Peppers have tons of b-sides from their 1999-2007 area where they were a pretty approachable alternative rock band, rather than funk or rap-like. Not all of the ones in this playlist are good, but it's a good start (along with the albums Californication, By The Way, and Stadium Arcadium).

i really like phoenix as well

if you liked any of the later work from the Strokes there's always their singer's solo album, which is really poppy but clearly influenced by his band
