I thought this deserved a topic all its own.

That shit was awesome. Great job Lange, to me it was the highlight of the stream. I really hope Robin takes a good look at it and shows it off to the current TF2 team.

Imagine joining up a game like that, where you enter as a class you pre-pick, and your icon is your current loadout in some kind of pose, similar to how it was displayed on stream. Not sure on how all the details would work, but holy shit that would be cool.

Anyway, heres hoping to see more of something like that, would love to see some pugs used with the same kind of ruleset (need to pick at least one offclass, pick/ban system etc). Even a stream of it, wouldn't want to see Langes long work be used up in just a couple hours, even if it was for such a good cause. Make it a premier, not just a one time thing!

EDIT: Rewatching it I also wanted to mention the pyros did really well on the first round. Basically every time the camera was on shrugger he was getting roasted by Satan. #PyroIsViable

Next year, it would be interesting(or bad) if there was a dedicated map to Dota Fortress, like cp_dota. Imagine like 3 cp_fastlanes, but smaller and more modified to act like lanes in TF2. Then there would be cap 3 cap points in each of these lanes and the final one would act as the "Ancient" like in Dota 2, and that you would need to cap to win(after the other 3 are capped of course). Or make it where you don't need to cap all 3. It would be a little like cp_standin where some teams split their players to different points. It would be hard to make as not only do you need 3 lanes, you'd need to add stuff in between also.

I liked the basic concept (up until Robin subbed in, but it got us to $100k so who cares?). But I think there's a little room for improvement into a PUG format:

1. Players can add up to multiple classes a la pug.na(hl).

2. Instead of banning certain people, captains can elect to ban either a map or a class. Where a map ban prevents it from being randomly selected and RTV'ed to, and a class ban restricts anyone from using it.

3. Since the captains are playing, their 6th pick is to select one class and either restrict it to Vanilla items or give it expanded unlocks. This applies to both teams.

4. Players picked to play a certain class are locked to that class, moving to a different class for the game requires approval of both captains.

Yay or Nay?

I have to say that I'm extremely amazed at how this turned out. I tried to make something similar that looked more like the traditional Dota 2 Captains Mode HUD a few months ago, but that isn't even close in terms of quality to what we saw last night.

Props to everyone involved - Lange, anangrysockpuppet, STAR_ and Jerma, Sal and cbear, all of the players involved, the rest of the Tip of the Hats staff and volunteers, and anyone else behind the scenes that helped make this amazing event happen.

Lange did say on stream the code for the dota fortress segment would be released open source for the community to work with in future events.

I actually had an idea sorta similar to this layout it used mvm. So two teams of six pick what classes they want to use and the map starts off with everyone picking their upgrades, after the timer scout minions start to spawn and persure the other team's base. Then I guess there are level 3 sentries in each lane(sorta didn't think it this far) and just like in dota where when you get to a certain point in an teams base your minions upgrade (so scouts turn into soldiers) and the map is played out until the bomb is deployed into the base (the actual players get to carry the bomb).

This was a beautiful piece of coding, and I would love to see it implemented in some form of Matchmaking system. Also, pyro is definitely viable. I'd love to see more teams break the meta of 6s and start playing with some real offclasses. Just imagine Huey or Satan on full time pyro for mix^.

Satan is playing fulltime pyro for a 6s team right now as far as I know, I think they're in plat 6s in UGC. A full time pyro on mix^ would definitely not fit in with their playstyle because pyro tends to slow down the game, and Mix^ is all about being aggressive and moving quickly off tiny advantages.

Fulltime pyro might work in 6s, but I think its biggest weaknesses (low mobility, can't really kill anything unless in melee range) outweigh its biggest strengths (prevents most spam, airblast). Good teams should be able to deal with a pyro pretty easy, even if they are as good as Satan or someone, just have the scouts midrange the pyro and hitscan him to death.

On topic, it would be pretty sweet to see some events using the Dotafortress thing more often, it was super entertaining! Maybe implement it with the 4v4 format? It might work more smoothly with that gametype.

Doesn't the shotgun have better midrange then the scattergun, and a tighter spread? If so, the pyro would have a better midrange game unless hes using the flaregun.

Would love to see it played out, in dota fortress or otherwise.

It does not.
The scattergun is the exact same thing as the shotgun, except instead of ramping up from 6/pellet to 9/pellet, it ramps up from 6/pellet to 10.5/pellet.
(Yes, I know that a pellet can do minimum 3 damage, but I was referring to the section where the damage dealt was actually different. The falloff past 512 hammer units is the same for both.)
