Seeking scout DM/general advice

I never played scout much up until a year ago. I've been practicing off and on in attempts to improve my aim, and I'm definitely better now than I used to be. However it seems that recently (see: months ago) I hit a glass ceiling. I can play at least moderately well on organized pubs but it just feels that I'm in this weird gray area where, when I play, I am either not being challenged enough, or I am getting completely wrecked by more seasoned players.

I seldom am able to play DM or MGE for very long without becoming severely discouraged and quitting. Then I just avoid those sorts of servers for a while, come back, lather rinse repeat. It's even more frustrating when an opponent !removes midround because I simply cannot pose a threat. If that doesn't happen, I get nervous, shaken, and I perform even worse.

I know the key is "practice practice practice". I don't expect to get good overnight. I just want to feel like I am improving. My problem is that when I play these modes I feel so out of tune with other players and myself, I don't feel like I am learning anything. My aim is shoddy. My tracking is nonexistent. I try to pick up on what my peers are doing and apply it, but it never seems to work out. I don't know how to "practice smart", and whenever I try to learn I just fall flat.

As a minutely-relevant side note: The fact that I have a wireless mouse probably does not help. I've been wanting to get a wired mouse for quite some time, but I'm not sure what to shop for. Any advice regarding that is also appreciated.

Play with people who are better all the time, and you will get better. The gray area is kind of weird, but you learn more from a death than you do from a kill, IMO.

Also, G400

Have you tried botting? tr_newbot and tr_walkway are personal favorites that I go to when dm or mge becomes too frustrating for me.

one thing that holds a lot of scouts back is their computer

I know that sounds silly, but after getting a constant 120 frames I could hit plenty more shots than with my old, outdated computer

so if you aren't getting good frames, I would recommend upgrading. if you are, practicing and watching better players always helped me

When you go into a dm or mge server have something in mind that you want to work on and just take breaks once in a while. When you get discouraged think about the goal in mind that you have. As for a mouse, g400 is nice.

Don't take it too seriously. Just zone out when you start playing MGE or DM. Let your eyes glaze over and don't focus too hard. Just let your body relax and react on it's own. This way you won't get frustrated if you keep dying, and your subconscious kind of takes control. It's sort of like driving a regular commute. Relax, zone out, and eventually you'll reach your destination before you even know it.

do you think 120hz is absolutely a necessity if you want to get to a high level?

If you're interested in 6's, first i'd look and really try to see if the problem is your aim. Unless you're missing shots on people that aren't looking at you/dodging your shots or you are missing shots on people standing still then you're dm isnt the most pressing issue most likely, and in this case i'd work on making sure that you're taking the right kind of fights, like fights where you know you only have to hit 1 shot to kill them or fights where you know you can get the jump/1st full scatter on someone, a good way to learn how to do this in my opinion is to play with your team (by which i mean play close to your team) and during stalemates or during the beginning of pushes instead of trying to play aggressively and get picks try playing more passively and making sure that once the uber exchanges are over or the initial spam has gone and players are reloading you're ready to get a buff and go push the other team around a little. The way you work with your team to create openings for them and to capitalize on the small openings they can give you ( bouncing a demo, doing a lot of damage to a few players, or even just eating up/dodging a lot of spam ) is just as important as aim.

As for actually aiming, i'd watch top level players and maybe try to watch how you aim compared to them, other than that just practice trying to be accurate and not letting your movement be detrimental to your aim. Also muscle memory helps for twitch aim but i wouldn't put too much concentrated thought into that since imo its mostly something that has to develop on its own

Hope it helps,
Sincerely, a scrub

Strafe aim
When he goes left, you go right and move your mouse left slightly
When he goes right, you go left and move your mouse right slightly
Smash your A and D keys until others notice your model moving at a rate faster than the human eye can perceive
Also did I mention strafe aim?

I think I saw you on the reddit MGE server a while ago and had a match with you.

Since everyone else has said stuff relating to aim i'll say to always keep yourself positive, enthusiastic and enjoying the game. Becoming 'severely discouraged' will have a very heavy effect on how you improve.

A decent mouse will really help. Bad wireless mice tend to have awful input lag which will throw off your aim horribly. If you feel inconsistent, or like you should be doing better, it's almost definitely something to do with your computer/input devices (speaking from experience).

Once your system starts working properly, you'll find it so much less frustrating, trust me.

On a serious note, practice. Practice by just playing. I don't mean to not focus on ways to improve your game while playing, but what I'm saying is to keep on playing. Play for an extra hour or so if you can spare it. Overtime, brutha.

I know you're seeking help on improving your DM, but a piece of advice I want to give you is to focus more on being a smart player. DM is only a fraction of this game. In terms of being an individual player, DM is still only a fraction of this game. If you can out think your opponent, your ability to win the fight will sky rocket.

Now in terms of DM, you say you MGE and play in DM servers. That's good. Even though it can be highly frustrating (MGE more so than DM IMO), it helps and it will only stop helping when you make it.

Movement is part of DM. Some people may disagree, but that's how I see it. Work on your movement just as much as you work on your DM. This isn't me saying to not do the simple things like spamming A and D as that can be effective from time to time. What I'm saying is learn to utilize your environment with the props around you and your movement.

Oh, and pug. Pugging is the closest you'll get to an actual game if you're not scrimming/in a match.

Finally, have fun playing. Don't try to get frustrated. Brush it off instead of being frustrated. It's not worth getting stressed out over silly stuff. Play to have fun. Well, unless you're like me and have fun when you're doing well more often than purely having fun regardless.

I often have trouble figuring out if you're trying to troll people with every thing you post. Spamming A and D constantly is bad, yes, doing it every now and again at random times isn't.

IcyWindstuff about strafe aiming

Strafe aiming is a good way to point and click, but so is tracking and flicking. Learn how to utilize all three. And yes, strafe aiming is basically tracking, I know. What I'm saying, however, is that strafe aiming is basically mirroring the other player's movement and tracking (or flicking too), as opposed to having sporadic, thought out or not thought out movement and tracking/flicking. I consider it the in between way of aiming.

Phraktureif you click on them you do damage
if you dont click on them you miss
hope that helped

that wasn't very nice phrakture, minus fragged q-(",)z. please be more serious and helpful in the future.

now more surs.
you should try to not get mad and just keep playing. as you said they are more seasoned players. you get better from practicing, you just need to practice. and keep at it. also don't focus on your disadvantages if you can't solve them. think about what you did wrong. but aiming is really simple so not much to think about. but movement can be thought about and movement affects your aim some what.

really though get a new mouse. wireless isnt going to cut it. pick one: zowie fk/ec1/ec2, microsoft wmo/ie 3.0, logitech g400, razer DA/abyssus
get the rest of your setup good (fps, internet, mousepad, monitor, cfg etc)
lowering your sens if its high can help a lot with scout (recommend 10"/360 to start)
don't forget movement and positioning is very important even in DM.
don't worry about losing in MGE. don't be scared to play anyone. seriously don't let it get to you just be confident take your losses and learn from them.
matches/scrim/pug/lobby is probably the best practice for scout.

I feel the same way when I play MGE even against close friends. It seems like there's more than just aim issues here so I'm suggesting practising on your own first. The best way to "learn" something is to understand on your own without anyone's advice/help first, THEN you seek help on the little things like track aim/flick aim etc.. So play against bots until you get that "feel" everyone else that's wrecking you gets. Then when you play against real people you see improvements.

Also when you play against people that are destroying you (in game wise) you need to avoid 1v1 direct confrontations with them. One the pros of playing scout is that you are able to pick and leave 75% of all your fights; if things turn sour, leave.

Ruwin gave a really good advice on stream once, that was to THINK about each and every death that happens to you. Who killed you? Were you out of position? Which one got the first shot off? Was the death your fault? etc etc... Thinking about this EVEN in mge will help you improve. You may not feel the improvement right away (because it might take sometime to fix a bad habit of long strafing too much or whatever) but making that mental note is already the first step in improving because every other time the same thing happens to cause you to die you will understand the REASON for your death and you'll slowly develop a strategy to fix it.

njaone thing that holds a lot of scouts back is their computer

I know that sounds silly, but after getting a constant 120 frames I could hit plenty more shots than with my old, outdated computer

so if you aren't getting good frames, I would recommend upgrading. if you are, practicing and watching better players always helped me

I can confirm this with personal experience. 120hz is nice but I don't think it's completely necessary to hit your shots. Framerate is more important.

But seriously I know what you mean. It can be really frustrating improving DM because it's easy to feel like you've stagnated. I personally think DM servers are better than MGE in most cases for DM...
