when my long, excruciating days are over, i want to play team fortress 2. i like to think i'm pretty decent at the game, and on most days i don't have any problems with the games i play. i play well, i get a lot of frags, and i generally have a pleasant experience. some days, however, i get completely floored by 1 or 2 good players and/or teams. and when that happens i get frustrated at them for a short while, but then afterwards it turns into frustration at myself for being unable to live to that level of play. that's something i WANT to play on! why aren't i? what am i doing wrong?

eventually, the day passes and i go back playing like normal. but in the back of my head the memories those days still linger on. all i can really say is "maybe one day i'll be able to play like that."

i know it seems kind of cringeworthy to want to play good at a dying 14 year old video game but i love it a lot, and i'd like to have as much fun in a form i like as possible before i move on.

if you've had an experience like mine or wanna say something else, please do. i'd like to know

For minor situations, try to healthily channel frustration into improvement.

That said, if you find yourself being frustrated to the point of genuine anger/rage: ground yourself, take a few breaths, and tell yourself--like you said in your post--it's just "a dying 14 year old video game".

That game can be important to us, but it should only be important insofar as getting an enjoyable experience out of it. If you're not having fun, fuck it. Take some time away and do something else

Kevin hit the nail on the head, you gotta be easy on yourself and realize nobody is perfect and you will always have bad games or get outshined by someone else. If it really becomes a huge issue I would even say you might want to just not look at logs, just focus on helping your team win and doing the best you can. Some people get super down on themselves for their K/D and will straight up disable it in their hud (roamers do this primarily cuz they have trash stats from sacking).

I think the healthier way to strive for improvement is by noticing situations in which you get caught out or could change your play somehow, rather than looking at a more abstract statistic and wishing your number was magically higher. But even then, getting angry at yourself is never helpful so I think practicing forgiveness and trying to let go (take a few breaths, think about something else) is probably your best bet. Nobody gets good instantly, but you don't see banny yelling at himself and getting super mad if he messes up, he has the mental game to not get flustered even if he is playing badly or losing, and everyone should strive towards that.

TF2 is somewhat about mechanical skill but beyond a certain point it's just timing, gamesense, team play, and mental game, and all of those things you can practice every game you play and try to be more cognizant about, rather than beating yourself up for missing or doing low dpm.

If you truly wanted to be that good, you would be making steps to get to that level. Whether or not the time-investment to achieve this is feasible or something you want to do is for u to decide.

bearodactyl Some people get super down on themselves for their K/D and will straight up disable it in their hud (roamers do this primarily cuz they have trash stats from sacking).

This. It has helped me huge amounts with focusing on teamplay/winning the actual game and avoiding the unnecessary sense of frustration that comes with seeing 7-14 on your scoreboard whenever you press Tab in a rough game, even if you do it for a completely different reason (match score, time left, ping etc.). I can remember situations before where my team would be winning comfortably but I'd still be pissed cause of accidentally seeing my K/D upon pressing Tab to check the score or time, which is dumb.
Might be a complete coincidence but I feel like those K/Ds got much much better ever since I stopped worrying about them as well.
