Douglas Adams“It comes from a very ancient democracy, you see..."
"You mean, it comes from a world of lizards?"
"No," said Ford, who by this time was a little more rational and coherent than he had been, having finally had the coffee forced down him, "nothing so simple. Nothing anything like so straightforward. On its world, the people are people. The leaders are lizards. The people hate the lizards and the lizards rule the people."
"Odd," said Arthur, "I thought you said it was a democracy."
"I did," said Ford. "It is."
"So," said Arthur, hoping he wasn't sounding ridiculously obtuse, "why don't people get rid of the lizards?"
"It honestly doesn't occur to them," said Ford. "They've all got the vote, so they all pretty much assume that the government they've voted in more or less approximates to the government they want."
"You mean they actually vote for the lizards?"
"Oh yes," said Ford with a shrug, "of course."
"But," said Arthur, going for the big one again, "why?"
"Because if they didn't vote for a lizard," said Ford, "the wrong lizard might get in. Got any gin?"
"What?"
"I said," said Ford, with an increasing air of urgency creeping into his voice, "have you got any gin?"
"I'll look. Tell me about the lizards."
Ford shrugged again.
"Some people say that the lizards are the best thing that ever happenned to them," he said. "They're completely wrong of course, completely and utterly wrong, but someone's got to say it."
"But that's terrible," said Arthur.
"Listen, bud," said Ford, "if I had one Altairian dollar for every time I heard one bit of the Universe look at another bit of the Universe and say 'That's terrible' I wouldn't be sitting here like a lemon looking for a gin.”

Please vote for the lizard that best represents your personal interests, so the wrong lizard doesn't get in.

dbki wish there was a way i could vote for neither biden or trump and still make any sort of difference

Little known fact, If a third party gets over 5 percent of the popular vote, they’re eligible for public funding in the next election cycle.
If you want to break the two party system the first step is to have a third party reach this threshold and theyll be able to gain more funding the next election cycle, which means they'll have a larger reach and over time become a major faction. While for the most part, with a few exceptions(Teddy Roosevelt and Bull Moose) we have had two major factions, but these factions have changed over time.

A consequence of voting 3rd party; if that party, let’s say leans more left, is that it will split the democrat votes even more and possibly ensure longer republican terms. I think the real problem is the FPTP-model of the elections. But sure you can advocate for a third party candidate, but it will very likely guarantee at least 3 terms of the candidate you absolutely do not want.

If you and a significant amount of others are unhappy with your party, why would you continue to align yourself with them? In this case, your party isn't aligned by ideology but through opposition so its already essentially broken. Teddy Roosevelt broke up the Republican vote and allowed Woodrow Wilson to win, but the party was able to realign itself under Harding.

Change candidate to party in that case, the point still stands.

My original point wasn’t that voting 3rd party wouldn’t result in any change but rather asking if the risk of having more terms with a republican president is a consequence you are willing to risk enduring. And like it or not, having Biden in office is a much bigger opportunity for pushing progressive policies than you would ever get with Trump, so saying that the only thing that aligns them is opposition is ludicrous. Anyone who’s a #BernieOrBust on this forum doesn’t seem to realize how much Bernie has already pulled the Democrats left in the primary and deciding to sit out the election because you haven’t come to terms with the fact that the democratic electorate isn’t nearly has progressive as they are.

Again, my original point was that while voting 3rd party is a viable option if you seek change, you still have to be ready to endure more years of right-wing policies as a price for the change you wish to see.

To quote Stalin. Both are worse.

Trump is worse because he is Trump - a disgusting charlatan who represents all of the brokenness of a system which produces such men, whose only real talent is self promotion and filing bankruptcy, and then allows them to be president.

Biden is worse because he actively promises not to change anything when there are very clearly many broken things in the United States.

Biden is in danger not only because he alienates the left-wing of the Democratic party, but also because he is actively ceding the populist furor of our cultural moment to Trump. It also damages the Democratic Party to portray Trump supporters as proto-fascists who are white trash/hicks/hillbillies - because it exposes clearly that American liberals have an especial distaste for the lower class, in particular the rural lower class.

The proper course of action is to refuse to participate at all - withdraw consent.

As much as I think you're spot on in the rest of your post, I take issue with this statement insofar as I don't know the details of your voting system.
1) Do the minor parties (eg. Green party) nominate candidates/run presidential campaigns? If these can be voted for and you agree with their politics, you ought to vote for them despite how obvious it is that they won't win
2) Are spoilt ballots/protest votes counted over there? And is the number of people who could have voted but chose not to counted over there? I know that for example in the UK, people who can vote but don't are not counted, but spoilt ballots are. In this case a spoilt ballot is the best form of protest in an electiom as it shows that you take such issue with the available candidates that you could be fucked to take time out of your day to go to the voting booth to express it.

I don't care how "cRinGE" he is, i doubt he's worse the Drumpf.

Besides, i care less about the president as i do the Supreme Court. The GOP is trying to get as many Conservatives on the bench as possible.

Hey there Snack, I'll explain some of the stuffs.

Yes, there are third party candidates. In some states they are able to get onto the ballot, but typically they do not and you have to write their name into a blank space below the candidates which got onto the ballot. The difficulty of doing that varies from state to state. In my state, Indiana, the Secretary of State has to approve names which can be written in the blank space, if they are not an approved candidate, your vote is not counted.

Spoiled and null ballots aren't really discussed here, but participation rate definitely is. My personal intention is to show up to vote for several local offices (who generally run as either Republican or Independent) and leave the rest blank. It's also important to do this in Indiana because if you miss an election your name will be purged from the register and you'll have to go re-register to vote in the next election which is a pain.

sacmake voting mandatory

Some countries fight corruption this way. People of certain types are discriminated against and discouraged violently to vote, so to combat that, voting is mandatory.

Like Argentina.

I'm not saying that they aren't far more corrupt, but I wanted to say it is mandatory in some places.
