need some ideas on how to gather clips for a monthly top-10 composed of clips strictly from ESEA-I and possibly ETF2L-prem

two approaches i see (or maybe a combination of the two):

1) have invite/prem players voluntarily submit clips
2) have a group of people comb over STVs

1) is much less reliable than 2), but also would take significantly less manpower

thoughts?

because the top10 plays have become increasingly horrible, things like engy and his sentry killing multiple players on gpit, or heavy sprees....its like having top pub plays of the month

So invite is the only division capable of submitting good clips? I'll tell you right now from experience with past series limiting it to invite only is a great way to ensure the series dies quickly.

I'd limit it strictly to games casted, so then we have play-by-play audio to back up whatever the highlight is. If there are any big plays in non-casted games those could be covered in a 30-90 second recap of the match.

i never said they were the only ones capable...but it should seem obvious what would make for better viewer content

dellortWhy would you limit it to invite only?

- it's a narrower band of demos to look at if we forgo the user-submitted route
- more hype/relevance for our casts when viewers see the same names in the top10
- the same 5K streak on a 1 health afk team from lower divisions has been repeated ad nauseum; we're going to shoot for a different angle and provide some context/commentary for the clips to hopefully provide something unique and refreshing

What about a mixture of the two?

It doesn't seem logical to me to limit the accepted submissions (which may result in few or no clips at all) over filtering out the bad submissions (which would take a bit more time but help ensure the series will actually last). The tf2jump weekly series started up a few months ago and submissions were made available to everyone, as of right now the "non-pro jumpers" which would be the equivalent of non-invite players, make up a majority of the accepted submissions.

at least that's my take on it. remember the push gaming top 10 plays? i still watch those if i come across them because it's genuinely cool to see an invite level player make a big play. not so much the previous months of the commft top 10 (when it existed).

I think they would be more interesting if they are invite-only--you would know who the players are, and it wouldn't be clips of people shitting on UGC Plastic players.

Strictly invite or open to everyone don't have to be the only two options... I just think limiting it to a single (small) division will make the number of submissions a big issue.

which is why i'm leaning towards option #2 which would make this a nonissue

2; it's easy, and reliable.

Gathering clips from invite matches isn't hard, especially with the amount of people from our community that watch a ton of matches.

If people decide for option 2, there is no reason not to allow option 1 as well.

Maybe start with invite / prem clips, and once people have experience with this thing, branch down into lower divisions?

Ruwinill be honest with you i've watched many top 10 videos and i have no idea who 90% of the people are in them.

This.

Also, there are great plays every week. The only potential problem is that how great you want the top 10 to be. I feel like the top 5 would be pretty good every week, but the 6 through 10 clips might be less than decent or mediocre.

It just depends if you want a good top 10 with mostly unknown people or a decent top 10 with known players (unless you do a top 5 with known players). Why not consider top 5 for better quality?

Unless you give incentives to the invite players to submit clips, like a few keys or a hat for the top play, it'd have to be #2. Invite players have the best clips but also tend to participate in these sorts of things the least.

Well if it's any sort of indication, the top 10 with open submissions is now notoriously mediocre. When you've got a thousand people watching invite matches now it's not too difficult to catch massive plays and note when they're happening; I'd suggest instead of limiting it to 5 you could instead just free form it as the Top X plays of the week? As long as you've got quality clips it'd be a shame to limit it to 5 and have great stuff go unrecorded.

That would be fun to watch, unless you don't care about the community.

Enigma, i could, you know, review entire stvs and search for highlights and all. But i can't create videos (mostly because idk how), i could give the one creating the video the ticks of all the stvs i reviewed, that is what you are looking for?

that's exactly what we're looking for. all we need is a group of people to go through STVs and find ticks. i'll make a call for help shortly and be in touch with you then.

Number 2 is definitely the better option here considering the small size of invite.

The push gaming top 10s were awesome that's for sure (leogeo!) but back when they did those there were no separate divisions for ESEA so it wasn't limited to just certain players. Hell I was in one of those top 10s and that was when I was really new to comp, and far from being an "invite player". I made a huge play against a top team and it made the cut. I honestly think if there is going to be a new top 10 series for the site rather then just limit it to invite players, limit it to just ESEA (and euros) and just comb through the clips to find the ones that deserve to be in there. Open and IM players can play the game too, plus it helps newer players in lower divisions get noticed which is always nice.

is it that hard for invite people to tell someone (enigma?) if they had any cool airshot, spree or whatever? so people wont need to waste their time by watching stvs with nothing interesting

Keeping it to invite keeps it easier in terms of work. If someone wants to do IM/etc, I'm sure tftv could show it on the site. It's really down to who's willing to sort through and put together the video; permission shouldn't be much of a problem (unless you make awful compilations).
