A day before the start of the tournament, it will turn into 9v9 class limit 1, and then we'll all realize we got baited into a HL tournament.

Hey guys,

massive delusional idiot lolhighlander sigafoo here

Apologies for the switch up, but I'm pressing on. Besides the class / team changes, everything is pretty much the same. I did some play testing of this last night and it actually played fairly smoothly on payload and koth. Obviously it's experimental, but I'm looking forward to it :).

Any of you who don't want to play, that's cool. I expect to be torn apart in this thread as per usual, but people who are interested. Currently the prize pool is at $2,160 and I think it'll get to around 2.5k.

Rules and such can be seen at cup.sigafoo.tv

And you can register your team at register.sigafoo.tv

Thanks <3

May I just know your rational for the switch-up? Valve seems pretty set on using 6s in one form or another, so what prompted you to make it 7v7? I'd like to see your ideas rather than just speculating.

the thing is, it could easily play fine, its just that its a pain in the ass to get into now.

like, there are tons of 6s teams that exist that are willing to play this for its own sake. and there are even others who've put together 6s teams just to play it. Now everyone who was planning to go into this needs to find a 7th teammate; which not only makes it more difficult to even enter, but also makes it more difficult for people to find groups to practice against as well.

If you weren't pleased with the initial tournament you announced can I ask why you wouldn't want to host an unofficial valve tournament? You could use the current mm format/rules or a format that is somewhat tangible with the direction valve has the game heading so they can accurately gather feedback and at least have an opportunity to see how their version of tf2 would play out. I genuinely don't understand the thought process behind this. If its purely only for amusement and something new to experiment with little chance of longevity then I misunderstood your intention

sigafooHey guys,

Don't. You gain no support from playing the "oh yeah I expect to be crucified but it's okay you don't have to play if you don't want to <3" to play victim. You gain no sympathy for playing the "oh these mean 6v6 players and their elitist attitude" card to appeal to the others. You gain no pity from being passive-aggressive towards people you are advertising to. But I know you're not advertising to 6v6 - you're advertising to TF2. You want to see what else you can craft with TF2's potential. You want to open people's minds up to more than just one way of TF2. As do many others before, during, and after you.

I also know people have said some volatile, disgusting shit in this thread against you. I get that. I get you don't owe anybody anything. But if you're going to commit to this fully, I want to at least see you have more faith in this than "yeah it might suck but" - but what? Data? From 2 days? From a few scrims and surveys?

Forgive me if somebody already said this but a whole $2,500 seasonal tournament or league than a 2-day cup will yield more results. You can collect more data with a whole season of people having time to develop strategy or sticking to the same boring shit. A 2-day cup? People will not commit to opening their minds beyond 2-days vs. a whole season. They've watched Valve Games, they've watched Prolander. Off-class Lo-Fi Cups, Ready Steady Pan - all showmatches and tourneys. And they will say the same thing: "oh, that was fun to watch! why don't leagues allow X more or let Y happen?".

UGC has run 4v4 for a while. eXtelevision focused on Arena Respawn. We can see exactly what works and what doesn't about both of those formats because they had multiple seasons. Leagues are running a global whitelist for 6s, made by 6v6 players who know the flaws of it, to see if we were actually wrong - or if we'll never see the light of support from Valve until we lie and say we were wrong.

7v7 1-class limit for a few weeks for $2,500? I don't know if you can back those logistics what with HL and 6s also being on the regular, but again - you'd have more to show from that than 2 days. But I also imagine if this is a success, you'll want to do this more, see what other ways you can count the ways of how to play TF2. And of course: your money, your game. Not our game. Good luck, still lft.

This went from "let's create some real data about a different take on 6s, particularly in light of my conversations with valve about how they're unsure of the viability of the current 6s format to grow" to "let's try a new gamemode lol"

I was really excited to watch the challenge cup to see what would come of it when teams have a reason to try hard. This change makes no sense to me- it doesn't seem to have any sort of goal in mind whatsoever.

MR_SLINI don't think Valve thinks that TF2 with no class limits is the best way to push the game forward.

if this is the case then why doesn't valve give us any indication more than a cryptic post from someone who visited valve months ago? It's not like the format sigafoo is pushing for this tournament is any closer to the theoretical future valve competitive system than current matchmaking is, and if it IS closer then why leave 99% of the community in the dark about it?

I gotta say Sigafoo, this is really, really disappointing.

When this was first announced I was genuinely excited and hopeful, because while I disagreed with how you were doing things, I liked the concept. I thought the only problem with how you were running things was that you had too many variables. A tournament where we play normal 6s but scout is limited to one is a great way to see if scout limit one is a positive or negative change. A tournament full of koth and payload maps is a great way to see if playing more koth and payload maps is a positive or negative change. A tournament where we play normal 6s, but with a pick/ban weapon system is a great way to see if that kind of a system is a positive or negative change. (Personally I don't think any of those changes would be a positive change, but that's irrelevant to my point)

Putting all three together makes the results less impactful, because it's difficult to see which changes were good and which were bad, but I was still hopeful because there still could be some information gained, and you said that things could still be changed. I had hoped that from community feedback, and common sense, you would reduce the variables, or change the tournament in a way that would allow us to better analyze which changes were be good and which were be bad.

Holly shit though you just went in the complete opposite direction. At this point your format is so far away from traditional 6s, no valuable information will be gained, and this tournament will prove nothing to the community. I suppose it's your money, and you're under no obligation to make this tournament something that will provide quality data, and improve the game, but god damn am I sad because that's what I thought you were trying to do when I first heard about the tournament.
