6.4.2 released with documentation improvements and bug fixes.

Also there's a new beta,

6.5.0-b1 released with optimizations and some modular system work.

This new modular system is really cool. I guess it can replace an old addon/preset system, so we won't need so many cfg files and folders. Good job!

This new module idea stuff is pretty neat stuff, you should definitely use more of if throughout the config.

PS What are your thoughts on tf2 huds is there any performance up/downsides there ? Because I recently switched from toon hud to Hypnotize m0rehud and my game had a much smoother feel to it.

Presets and addons are here to stay, they will just be certain combinations/usages of the modules.

Jon_This new module idea stuff is pretty neat stuff, you should definitely use more of if throughout the config

That's the plan.

Obviously there's going to be performance differences based on how people code certain things or use a certain feature that's more intensive. I don't really pay much attention to individual HUD performance though so I can't really help you find the best one.

Hello, my bluetooth headphones don't work when I use this config (work when using -default launch command). They work fine on the menu but stop working when I launch a map. Thanks in advance.

edit: using the comp preset by the way

What launch options do you use normally?

Also what do you mean when you say they don't work? Do they not play sound at all? Or is it not spatializing the sound in each ear correctly?

-novid -nojoy -nosteamcontroller -noff -softparticlesdefaultoff -reuse

before I launch a map everything works fine. After I launch a map sound completely stops working and there's a light static sound. If I alt-tab sound still doesn't come back, I have to close TF2.

What is snd_surround_speakers set to? Also, what settings are set in your audio tab of the in-game settings?

If you're using headphones, use snd_surround_speakers 0 (headphone setting) or snd_surround_speakers -1 (autodetect).

On a totally fresh install of TF2 (fresh OS install too), something about the bad GPU addon makes my game crash. Game runs fine through the main menu and I can join empty server no problem, but when I join a server with other people on it my game freezes and then eventually closes at the motd. I'd really like for it to work, when I join empty servers it looks like it gives me an extra 10-15 frames.

I'm running Ubuntu 16.04, using the compquality preset and the bad CPU addon. Both of those work no problem, it's just the GPU addon causing crashes. Also using no explosion script, along with no hats mod and headsfeet.

My launch options are: -novid -nojoy -nosteamcontroller -noff -softparticlesdefaultoff -reuse

My specs are:
7th Generation Intel Core i3-7100U Processor (2.4GHz, 3MB L3 cache)
Intel HD graphics 620, up to 2110 MB Dynamic Video Memory
4GB DDR4 Memory, 1TB 5400RPM HDD

I'll include my autoexec in the spoiler. It's set up as per instructions, having been placed in /tf/cfg/custom.cfg

You don't need the badcpu addon.

I just noticed you updated the files recently so I'm not sure which version, to be honest. What I can say is that I'm using the vpk files and downloaded them on the 5th. Will try reinstalling with the newer version minus the CPU addon and edit once that's done.

edit: Well, after more experimentation, it looks like mastercomfig isn't the culprit, just the catalyst. With the config installed, the game freezes and crashes at the motd. The GPU addon lets me get to the class selection screen. Without either one, I can get through character selection and run around for anywhere between 30 seconds to several minutes (albeit at 15 fps) before finally freezing up and crashing. Maybe this laptop just can't cut it. It's weird, though; when I was messing around earlier today, just the config without any addons would let me play, but now it's crashing. No idea where to go with this.

Looks like this laptop just can't run TF2. I even tried a completely clean install and it won't run past class selection.

So I've just been going through and switching to every command commented as "for cpus with less than 4 cores"

but should I actually be doing that?

Thanks

can someone clarify what step 5 does exactly?

If you have your own autoexec.cfg already, rename it to custom.cfg, but make sure you don't have any conflicting configs in there.

You can also create a custom.cfg in your tf/cfg folder to override any settings in the config.

Why do you need to override the settings in the config.cfg file by creating another file? Can't you just copy and paste the commands directly.

Also why does changing the autoexec.cfg file to custom matter. I get why you dont want any conflicting command, but why change the name of the file. Does it have something to do with the file in tf/cfg named custom.cfg as well.

I meant logical cores/threads. Sorry for the confusion.

By config, it means overriding settings in mastercomfig, not config.cfg. Mastercomfig comes with its own autoexec.cfg that execs custom.cfg after everything else. So you would use custom.cfg to use a different texture quality, or some other settings, as well as any binds.

Try without the NoHats mod.

So I've just been going through and switching to every command commented as "for cpus with less than 4 cores"

but should I actually be doing that?

Thanks
I meant logical cores/threads. Sorry for the confusion.
can someone clarify what step 5 does exactly?
If you have your own autoexec.cfg already, rename it to custom.cfg, but make sure you don't have any conflicting configs in there.

You should defiantly say that in the config (that by cores you mean logical cores) or change "cores" to "threads" or "logical cores". I'm using this config for about 2 months (and I'm one of the people who actually actually read the config they're using and discussions about it) and I had no idea, so I used CVars that are good for CPUs with less than 4 thread (apparently, I thought it was cores) while I have 4 threads.

create a file in your tf/cfg folder called custom.cfg. Then in there, enter

r_decals 18
mp_decals 18

(as explained in the instructions)

Editing .vpk files (in Windows at least) is very easy. All you got to do is to "tell" Windows to always open .vpk files with Notepad++ / Notepad and you're fine for the rest of your PC's life. You can use this guide (It may also work for Windows 8 and 7, idk).
If you don't like / have Notepad++ just replace it with Notepad.

I wouldn't recommend editing the VPKs directly because your changes will be overwritten on every update.

Yes, but I would recommend benchmarking every dxlevel because on some newer systems, dxlevel8 is slower.

Doesn't seem like that's the case. If you're using cfg.tf, comfig.cfg and the preset are merged into one file, so you might be seeing the enabling of it in comfig and then the overriding of it to be disabled in comp.cfg.

I think you're misunderstanding how the config works. In the VPK, there are two separate files, comfig.cfg and comp.cfg. Comfig.cfg contains the default values for the config and in the preset files, these values are overridden since they are run after comfig.cfg is run. So by default, the outline effect is enabled, but then the comp preset disables this.
