Good Ping but feels like 100+ Ping?

Hey,

the problem that I described in the title started happening out of nowhere 2 days ago and I have no idea what caused it/how to fix it.
I never had any problems with my internet connection, my Ping is below 50 on most EU servers and I very rarely get Pingspikes or disconnects (Ethernetcable).
But right now it feels like I am always playing with at least 100 Ping, Hitsounds are delayed, pogos feel wonky, the usual stuff you get when you play with high ping. Yesterday I asked two players and they told me that I was warping and teleporting, all with 40 Ping.

I will try to give as much information as possible, if I missed anything relevant pls ask away:

ingame screenshot with net graph 5

internet speed test

TF2 connection settings
(the types of commands that I don't understand and simply coppied from Comaglias cfg, never had any problems):

cl_cmdrate 66
cl_interp .031
cl_interp_ratio 1
cl_lagcompensation 1
cl_pred_optimize 2
cl_smooth 0
cl_smoothtime 0.01
cl_updaterate 66
rate 60000

launch options (very vanilla): -full -w 1920 -h 1080 -console -novid

also I am playing on a 144hz monitor with 120hz enabled (probably not revelant but thought I might add it)

ANY help would be apreciated, I am completely lost with this problem and couldn't find anything on google/TFTV

Hey there,

It sounds like you're experiencing packet loss. With your netgraph on, look at the "loss" counter. I expect you'll see it spike whenever those lag moments happen.

#2 TF2, Steam and Chrome are the only applications with network activity. Closing Chrome makes no (noticable) difference.

#3 I checked the "loss" counter on the same server and it stayed consistently at 0. Also I am not experiencing random lag spikes but rather the effect a higher ping would have.

Is the lag still there if you host your own server?

Nope, I tested it on a local server and its flawless.

Currently in the process of uninstalling and reinstalling, hope it will lead to something.

Uninstalled and did a fresh install, still the same problem.
Hitsounds and damagetext has a small delay and dodging rockets is impossible, I always catch a bit of spash dmg.

Super frustrating imo and I still have no idea how to attempt to fix this.

Try just pinging a website and seeing if your net spikes at all

in cmd:
ping google.de -t

Always thought projectile interp was supposed to be 0.0152 or something like that? If your CFG has .031 as the main interp command you probably have the wrong interp on projectile classes? Is it bad on all classes or just soldier and demo?

#8 Not 100% sure what this command does. Put it into console and in console it read that I have ~90 ping, my ingame ping was hovering between 40 and 50

#9 I am using flameHUD and haven't edited anything for at least 2 month, not sure what that would do.

#10 As I said I simply copy and pasted these commands from Comanglia a long time ago. I play Scout and never had any huge issues with hitreg, I just switched to Soldier to test if the high ping effect affects all the other classes (which it does). I think a high ping is very noticable when Rocketjumping so that's why I tested Soldier and Demo.
If you think the interp settings might be the cause of this I can try out different settings if you can redirect me to some different numbers.

You need to let ping -t run for a while. Screenshot the result. Seems like you simply got 90 ping though, which explains why it feels like ~100, because it is.

Interp is fine. Most prefer >30 for hitscan and >15 for projectile classes. So for shotgun solly it's preference anyway.

Once he actually runs ping -t for more than 1 second we might be able to.

#16 Sry, i skipped over your previous comment.

I let "ping google.de -t" run for a while but I assume I did something wrong, console only responded once .

Can you pls explain what I am supposed to do/ why the ping number in console differs from the one net_graph shows?
(One thing to add: a couple of days ago when the problem was very noticable and the command showed my ping at ~90 that's about what the game felt like, 90 ping. But today the command showed numbers between 65 and 80 but my ping felt nowhere near that high, it felt more like 30 ping)

Either way, today I had no problems with high ping and everything felt very responsive. Since I didn't change anything in TF2 I assume the problem might be my Internet connection but I did the speed test again and recieved pretty much the same numbers like a couple of days ago.

Obviously happy that it got better, but since the problem came out of nowhere and disappeared on its own I am worried it will keep coming back every few days.

Yes.
It's fine now, just do it again if it happens again. Ideally both google and the IP of the server it happened on.

Hate to necro this thread but I have been getting the same problems again.

net_graph ping gives me great numbers (30 or lower most of the time) but other players tell me I'm lagging and I can feel the latency on my end. Don't know if this is relevant but the connection seems fine for the first few minutes and then it goes to shit.
I've had these connection problems since last saturday now but besides that my internet it usually super stable.

This is how it looked last time after everything went back to normal and this is how it looks now. Happens on all servers I play on, don't get the effect on local server.

Are you the only person on your internet while playing? Even if it is an ethernet connection if someone is streaming in the house (Netflix, youtube, etc.); if your internet isn't the greatest you will lag.

That ping looks very unstable. Get WinMTR and run a trace to a nearby gameserver.

Your ping is already spiking to your local router, so I suspect that is the reason of your poor ping. Have you power cycled it yet?

Yeah, have done it a couple of times this week and now again. Shows the same results.

I am also using these adapters connected to my router, both adapter and router are about 3 years old. Do you think they have to be replaced?

You said you were connected through ethernet, did you really mean ethernet -> powerline -> ethernet?
