Took me 2 and a half listens until I got this album but holy fuck this shit goes hard. The themes of wickedness vs weakness resonate throughout the album and it feels like every song has a sense of irony in them. Only song I still don't like so far is GOD. and I still can't really get the "I'mma make it look sexy" hook but everything else is amazing,. not as good as TPAB imo but arguably on GKMC's level.

i like this album and i think if you like it you should keep listening to it and you shouldn't let other peoples opinions decide what you listen to

You cant judge an album entirely the day it was released. If you want hard party bangers go to soundcloud.

on first listen i didnt like it as much as tpab gkmc or section 80 but it took a while for tpab to grow on me too so maybe i'll like it more as i listen more

its still kendrick tho so it's gonna get regular playtime

where's the love for ELEMENT? it's the Money Trees of this album and it's getting slept on. kendrick's best take on a soulful hook since gkmc, and that third chord change underneath is extremely fucking tasty

I think the album sucks, let's just get that out of the way. Don't get me wrong, Kendrick Lamar makes fantastic music. He has great production, instrumentals (sometimes), topics, flow, awesome features, realness, depth, and even political discussion. But to me, from just a person who enjoys music, his albums to me now don't seem like records by him...if that makes sense. To me, if you take Overly Dedicated, Section 80, Good Kid Maad City, To Pimp a Butterfly, and now DAMN; the tone seems different. Maybe I'm just looking at the business side, but I can see the slow transformation to where he is now and how I like his music less and less. But his music over time seems like it's becoming more and more made just to please masses. Like I begin to like less and less songs as each album goes by. And when you make music like that, it comes off as less personal and more cynical. And when that happen, the album now has no replay ability. Like people will go absolutely crazy for 2 weeks, maybe even a month, then see no one else mention it until his next album. Like his music is good but now just seems like radio hits. Like he's fantastic to the business and critic side of rap and the music industry and pleasing mass audiences. The beats become higher in production but have less character. Like the song Lust is just a few piano keys, some low tones, and some hats (like we've never heard that before). Or the lyrics on some songs are just generic deep lyrics that J Cole and Joey Bada$$ do all the time like bringing up inner demons, poverty, hard times and blah blah. So once people forget this album exists, then they'll just wait to go nuts over the next one.
Also did Complex really need to make 12 videos on Kendrick in the past week?

I agree the lyrics on this project were weaker on DAMN than other projects but production and feel wise it was fantastic. I enjoyed the album.

While I agree that HUMBLE. especially seems like a song to please the masses, I think Kendrick is still experimenting. I think the album is a good 2nd place runner after Tupab, which still is one of the greatest rap/hip hop albums of all time. I spent all weekend repeating this album and going in-depth with the songs and I think that the amount of production and that so called depth made this album great. Absolutely love the background tunes like PRIDE's. Anyone notice this album has shit ton of references to religion? Maybe that denied its passage to the best Kendrick album yet Kappa

sorry for the slight necro but this is for sure the yeezus of kendrick's discography if that makes sense
goes pretty parallel: released after the typically regarded GOAT album, self aware themes of life as one of rap's greats, rather obscure samples, overall way darker theme than the rest of his music, entirely out of left field
IMO pretty solid album but still doesn't hold up to GKMC or TPaB in terms of substance

I wanna discuss this because I disagree with some of what you have to say here. Whilst I do think the album covered some dark and personal themes, I can't get why people think this is the darkest Kendrick has ever gotten when the dude practically admitted to his suicidal tendencies on u. u is one of the most gut wrenchingly depressing songs I've heard come out of any rapper - he's just tearing into himself with one guilt trip after another as he's drunk and crying.

Also I disagree with saying that it's entirely out of the left field. Musically, TPAB was entirely out of the left field. DAMN sonically does try some new things but isn't all that unique. The first thing that came to my mind when I heard HUMBLE was how much the beat and melody reminded me of recent grime music.

Yeezus is literally my favourite hip hop album ever, and I feel like calling DAMN the Yeezus of Kendrick's discography doesn't really sound right. I got some Yeezus vibes in my first 2 listens, but as I said, DAMN isn't anywhere near as bold of an album as Yeezus.

Holy fuck sorry for the nerd essay but I get really passionate about things as soon as Yeezus is mentioned
