School & TF2

Tf2 is killing my academic career. I can't focus on any homework, am too distracted to study for tests, and waste my time playing lobbies when I should be writing essays. I had a shitty sophomore year last year and I need to get my grades up if I want to get into my dream college or any college.

The worst part is, every time I uninstall the game, I can't go more than a day without re-installing it. I'm addicted. I'm really worried about my future, and would appreciate any help you guys can give.

ask your parents to hide your computer or something for the rest of the year and go cold turkey. I never had any problems balancing school and games, but if I did school obviously comes first.

The real quick logical solution would be to stop playing the game, but from what I read it seems like you find it difficult to do. What I would suggest is studying / writing essays outside home. Maybe in a public library or school library where it is impossible for you to get distracted. What I used to do back in my day when I cared about grades was to study and make my homework on my school library so when I got home I could forget completely about school and relax, play some tf2, do my thing.

try give yourself certain strict periods in which you do work, and other periods in which you play games. as others said leaving your room to do work helps, you can also do something like install another OS which forces you to restart if you wanna play games.

the above is all advice which ive been given but havent done so do with that as you will

This comes down to you. Just do the work. Just do it. There is nothing stopping you from getting where you want to be other than yourself. There is no way to trick or force yourself into doing the work. Realise that you must have priorities in life and do them.

youre in luck, there is a way to get out of that phase. let your intentions pass through your system and just know at this time its totally okay to let the silly gaming crave run its coarse. let it into your life, and let yourself see the game for what it really is. with time, you'll know what you really want and what really matters.

I had mostly the same issue a few months ago. I decided to quit TF2 and it's been one of the best decisions ever. I went from 30/40 hours per week to barely playing at all. I would highly recommend putting TF2 to the side for a while

If you really are addicted, then my suggestion is don't expose yourself to it when you have to be studying or doing homework. You don't have to leave school as soon as your last class ends. Stay at school until you are done with your homework! You will get done with your work a lot faster because your computer isn't there to distract you. Go to the school library where it is quiet and you will get your work done so fast because you are in a working environment and you will be happy with yourself. The best part is when you go home you will still have time to play tf2. I'm a junior in high school as well and when I work without anything to distract me, I am able to get everything done within an hour and a half. You can do this! I believe in you! Just give it your all my man

edit: this method works best if you have a car or a parent that can come get you from school at anytime you ask them to

I have p severe adhd, to the point where things like driving are p dangerous for me unmedicated. I also didnt bother to deal with it until last year. Once i started actually dealing with it and seeing a Dr i started doing my shit. I still like tf2 but my life/game balance has improved a ton. If you think you have a problem you need to talk to ppl about it

rmtThe worst part is, every time I uninstall the game, I can't go more than a day without re-installing it. I'm addicted. I'm really worried about my future, and would appreciate any help you guys can give.

Uninstall steam and block the website through your hosts file. Obviously adding those extra few steps won't help if you don't want to fix your problem, but it will give you more time to control yourself if you do get a sudden urge to go back to your 'addiction' (and if even you call it that, you're probably correct).

If it's literally an addiction you probably shouldn't expect to play the game again in the near future if you really want to kick the hold it has over you, but maybe eventually if you manage to develop enough good working habits you can think about whether you want to bring the game back into your life without letting it take it over again. After all, things can only be addictions if they negatively impact the rest of your life.

Then again, I can't talk, I've been addicted to a string of things for most of my life and have never really been able to deal with them effectively myself without literally just going cold turkey. Although if I did ever have an addiction to tf2 valve right now would be doing a pretty good job of fixing it for me, what with the shitty changes they've been making.

NexuJust set a timer and only play for that amount. Everyone thinks you need to go cold turkey and immediately cut out anything that's negatively affecting you, but you don't. You can't. No one can do that or else we'd all be perfectly flawless.

You don't need to uninstall the game
You don't need to block steam
You don't need to smash your computer (I predict this is gonna be the next extreme solution someone suggests)

I dunno how much hw you have daily, or if you have stuff to do after school (sports, work, etc.) but taking away something you love is not that answer. Just limit it so it doesn't take up too much time, play on weekends or something.

I'm gonna guess you've never actually been addicted to something because what you're saying doesn't make much sense. People don't actually 'love' the things they're addicted to -- it might start like that, but in the end it just becomes a trigger for some sort of negative behaviour (eg playing too long when you have homework to do, etc). And limiting the time you spend on something might sound easy, but it's clearly not for the op otherwise he'd already have done it.

That said, quitting cold turkey without a plan for how you're gonna manage your cravings isn't helpful either, as seen in the OP: "The worst part is, every time I uninstall the game, I can't go more than a day without re-installing it". So it's more about having a plan for how to spend the spare time without getting bored or feeling like you need to go back to the game (because of stress or something).

You don't necessarily need to quit completely, particularly if you do feel that you enjoy the game, but it's important that you do limit yourself somehow. Maybe set up your internet to cut out at certain times of the day, which might force you to do your homework first before playing games. Ideas like that can certainly work as long as you want them to.

But if motivation/distraction is an issue, which it sounds like it is, then quitting completely is really the best way to deal with it, at least in my experience (which is fairly extensive tbh D:).

zxpjust hang at the library and dont leave until you're finished

Honestly this is the best thing that you can do. Get involved with things at your school to keep you busy. Go to tutoring even if you don't feel like you need it.

Also focusing on completing one task at a time. An example for me would be my online math homework that's due every Thursday. I should be working on it the evening after I've had the lecture that day, but I procrastinate and leave it until the last day and it ends up making me stressed and I lose sleep over it.

this worked for me for a little while when i was in hs but then i realized that i could still do offline jump maps so i would stay up all night doing that instead of homework lol
or alternatively you could do this

for real tho uninstalling will just make you hate yourself even more and you'll surely find something else to do instead like watching streams/youtube videos
+1 for working at the library I found it made me much more productive and it allowed me to completely forget about school once I got home
but if you are doing homework from home and don't want to play too much you could just limit yourself to only playing scrims/matches (if you're on a team) or just play casually when you're finished with everything as a reward

just don't do what I did and let yourself play pugs on week nights
that will just turn into you telling yourself 'oh i'll just play one more game' and then its 4am and you're still pugging when you have class in 4hrs

rowpieceswhat i did for the longest time was do my hw after i had scrims/ matches which was really dumb. just start getting in the habit of doing your homework when you get home, it helps a lot

this. As soon as you get home from school just bang out your hw/do your studying. If you don't get a topic ask for help in school/ask friends for help. Alternatively you can try to get your hw done after school at the school library or wherever. If you're really fucked on a test or quiz just study as much as you can before scrims then study more afterwards.

Do your homework up until scrim time and work after scrims. Concentrate especially on weekends when there are no scrims and get your work done in advance. You can balance the two, especially since you're in hs. Works for me in undergraduate.

This is basically what everyone has said, but uninstall your games and Steam, and block the site if you must work at home and need the internet. However, you may still be tempted to browse other sites to procrastinate, like looking at frag videos. So, you might want whoever lives with you to do a check-up on you every ten minutes, or whatever time interval you feel isn't too annoying.

Otherwise, make a schedule (I recommend using a planner for everything), and block your internet access during times that you want to work. Then go to school or a library and just study/work at those places.

Or get your good buddies together who have similar subjects, make a study group, and commit to those times. That way, you don't disappoint them since it will be your idea, and if you do somehow disappoint them by ditching, then there's something else wrong with you.

It all comes down to how willing you are to focus on school and to change.

You need to develop self control. You can work around this by avoiding the computer and getting work done before you're home but at the end of the day you need to let it sink in that one is more important than the other. School has lasting consequences if you don't do well, And forget about more than half of your options in the future if you don't do above average. When you get home if you have work you need to think about whether or not you want to wake up tomorrow with nothing done and only a few hours to catch up. This is something you just need to accept and fight against. You can still play and enjoy tf2, but it's not priority over work or school.

It's a time management question. Instead of cutting yourself off entirely you need to actually learn how to manage your time effectively. Simply doing away with video games won't actually solve your problem because you'll still find other ways to fuck around that are equally unproductive.

The first best bet is to actually create a schedule and try to work yourself into it. For example, you set strict time limits on what you do at a given time and build in breaks and rewards for keeping with the schedule.

When I was in college (wildly different from HS where I did virtually nothing but had no trouble passing anything lol) I just set a hard limit that I did *all* school work before 5 PM. I would cut in a lunch date here and there or take a nice walk or something similar here and there, but for the most part any and all school work was done by 5 PM and then the fucking around could begin without a guilty conscience. If I had an especially large assignment that would go beyond that I would just work on it until I finished and then reward myself by doing something especially vice related lol.

I even do the same thing with my son who is in 3rd grade. When he gets home he gets 30 minutes to fiddle around and do whatever he likes and then he has to sit at the "work table" and do any/all of his school work and then read a book for 30 minutes. Once all that's done he's free to go about doing whatever he wants. I support him by doing the same since I'm taking graduate courses so I've got my dumpy lap-top set up right there doing my reading/writing stuff until 5 pm (I've kept that same schedule) - and it's easy access if he has questions since I'm doing homework too lol. I also sneak school work in while I'm at work because that's simply something that has to be done in my case lol.

Agreeing with #28/29, this is something everyone has to learn to do. Kids prefer short term gains over long term ones, which is why they eat candy, skip brushing their teeth, and ignore their homework. Adults prefer long term gains over short term ones, which is why they eat right, brush their teeth, and get their work done on time. You're just going through a phase where you're having to make these choices and you'll grow up eventually -- I don't see it as an addiction.

Take a deep breath, take a step back, and ask yourself what really matters to you.
