SEK are fine, I always try to use the shops that it'll actually be bought from to get the most accurate prices.

Ok, quick explanation why overclocking exists. You know that there's CPUs which are identical except for clockrates. That's because not every chip can handle the highest clockrates. However that also means if the fastet CPU Intel sells runs at 4.0 GHz then maybe only 20% actually max out at 4.0 GHz. Another 20% each could do 4.1, 4.2, 4.3 and 4.4 respectively. So people try and run their CPUs at that speed, see if it crashes and if not, hey free performance.
The other thing is at a certain frequency and voltage a CPU will consume a certain amount of power. Most of the time if you want higher frequencies you need higher voltages as well and power consumption goes through the roof. Since Intel wants to sell the CPU with 95W that's useless to them. But if you don't care about that, you can just get a better cooler, use 20% higher voltages to run it at 20% higher clockrates. Sure it might use 160W, but if you don't care it's almost free performance again.

Now some reasons why you shouldn't do it:
- It's a lot of effort. Basically you try a setting, run a stress test for 30-60 minutes, see if it crashes and then repeat with another setting. It can take days to get a good overclock.
- Intel didn't like it one bit so now they are locking all CPUs except the K versions which are identical to the non-K version of the same number, just overclockable, without a cooler and more expensive. They'll also only let you overclock with the most expensive chipset, so motherboards are more expensive too. Couple that with the fact that the CPUs don't overclock nearly as high as they used to and you're paying 100$ more for maybe 10-15% more performance.
- The most important reason is that you want to play on Ultra. That means you'll be limited by the GPU 99% of the time, not the CPU. So all that extra performance would just be money and effort for nothing. TF2 is a bit weird in that regard, but for new games it's GPU all the way.

Well that was a bit longer than expected, but trust me, it's the short version.

So that's why you shouldn't get an i7-6700K. The other thing is that the only difference between an i7 and an i5 is that the i7 can run 2 threads on each core basically at the same time. Now that's nice if you have a lot of threads that need to do work (streaming, rendering, that sort of stuff), but most games only use 3 or 4. So an i5 with it's 4 cores will get you exactly the same performance, at 2/3 of the price.

Now some more questions:
- When are you going to build it?
- Could you link me a shop or price comparision site?
For the monitor:
- Lightboost yes/no?
- G-Sync/FreeSync yes/no?
- IPS yes/no?
- Size? 24" or 27"?
I'm assuming you're fine with 1080p since barcaphillip mentioned that, but just to make sure:
- Resolution? 1080p or 1440p?

If you don't know what Lightboost, G-Sync, FreeSync or IPS are I can give you a short explanation or you can just google them.

Going to buy/build probably at the end of this month, when I recieve my paycheck. We use this site http://www.prisjakt.nu/ in sweden to compare various store items.

Yeah it's like you said, I have no idea what Gsync, freesync, lightboost and IPS are. What settings would you recomend? Looking for 24" and 1080 res. Not quite sure if whether I wanna get 1440p so that's why I'm just sticking with default 1080p.

Oh yeah also, could you make me 2 lists? 1 with the i5 core as you said and 1 with a good i7 core instead to see the differences and in case I wanna go with the i7 anyways.

hey setsul i was wondering if you can set me up with a build

id like to get something around $1500-1750 but no more over $2000

im looking for a computer good for tf2 csgo and other single player games that i can play and stream with good graphics and quality. i was thinking off getting a bulk of the parts on cyber monday if i can but its not a big deal if i dont. i just need to have parts in mind so if they are on sale then i can jump on them.

im probably going to be buying this monitor to go with the setup if it matters at all.

thanks for the help

They are not settings, they are features.
It depends on what's most important to you.
Basically:
- IPS = better colours, but more expensive. Preferred for photo/video editing or simply watching movies.
- Lightboost/ULMB/Strobing = lower motion blur, basically going from 120 Hz to 120 Hz with strobing looks like going from 60 Hz to 120 Hz. Good for fast fps games, but only if you can actually get >120 fps reliably (same as normal 120/144 Hz).
- G-Sync/FreeSync = Syncs fps and refresh rate so you don't get the horrible stuttering, screen tearing and other problems you'd get if your fps drop below the refresh rate. Great if expect to not be able to get 120/144 fps at all times.

While some monitors offer both Strobing and G-/FreeSync you can't use them at the same time. Well the XL2730Z can but it's 500$, 27", 1440p so not exactly what you wanted.

About the i7: It really won't do anything unless you're going to stream, keep that in mind. And because you'll have to get a cheaper GPU you'll probably get lower fps with it.

Same as always, I can make a rough sketch now, but I'd rather wait for the actual prices in the week that you'll actually be buying it.

That's still a long way off. There's not much point in doing a partlist 2 months in advance, especially if you're trying to take advantage of deals that I can't know about yet. I'd have to change most of the partlist again.

Post here again a week or so before Cyber Monday at earliest, then I should be able to do a much better job than I would be to now.

And fuck the VG248QE, I have so many rants on that topic.

Hi Setsul,
I bought all the parts you suggested me except the GPU that I still have to buy. I was wondering if you could tell me wich one should I buy between these from taocomputer (that, if I'm not wrong, have the characteristics you wrote in old posts):

Well then I guess Lightboost or something, since that seems to be the best feature for gaming, correct? I'll only be using it for gaming 95% of the time anyways.

Also alright, but if it's not too much trouble would you wanna give me a rough idea of what you'd have in mind now for a PC build and then just quickly go through it agian the week before I build it? It's alright though if you dont wanna waste time doing it twice tho, we could wait till then but I'd appreciate it a lot.

Well it depends whether you get more than 120 fps or less, which mostly depends on how high you turn the settings up.
Generally for fast paced games Lightboost, for slower games or if you want it to look as pretty as possible without stuttering G-/FreeSync.

I'll try to post a preliminary partlist this weekend.

Uh I'm hoping I can get 120+ FPS in at least med settings or something in most games considering I'm dumping quite a sum of money into building it ._.

Just to be clear, we're not talking about tf2 here right? About the graphic heavy sci fi games? I play tf2 on max frame config anyways.

rezgarGPU heavy games like world of warships and world of tanks.

Sorry, I laughed out loud at that one.
You can get >100 fps on max settings with a 150$ GPU in those.

WoT is also one of the few games with worse multithreading than TF2. Because it doesn't have any. At all.

Assuming you're talking about the new Star Wars Battlefront, that and Overwatch are actually not too demanding either. It's not easy but with e.g. a GTX 1080 getting >120 fps actually isn't a problem on 1080p even with maxed out settings.

Anyway, Swedish prices would be a bit too much work for now, but something along these lines is the goal:

SetsulrezgarGPU heavy games like world of warships and world of tanks.Sorry, I laughed out loud at that one.

Alright that looks great thank you, just wondering though what if I wanted to start streaming, making videos etc. Wouldn't I need an i7 core then? If so, how much more $$ would I need to add to my current budget to replace the i5 with a good i7 instead and keeping everything else?

You wouldn't need it, it just would actually help. If you're not streaming you wouldn't notice a difference.
Difference would be about 100$.

The thing is though I'm not sure if the 1080 is going to happen with Swedish prices. Since the 1070 is 200$ cheaper if we have to drop down to that the i7 might fit within the budget anyway.

Hey Setsul and other PC building enthusiasts. I'm planning on getting a new PC and I was wondering if you can give me some advice and maybe hook me up with a build you think fits my needs.

So basically the plan is to come up with a build and then send it to a store I know for them to build it for me, the budget should be around 5000-5500 NIS which is ~1300-1450$. One problem is that the price and availability of components might differ from where you look parts up, thus making my budget worth less then it would be in $.
I would like you to try to fit the budget in $ and if there's a component that isn't available for me or that costs a drastically different amount for me I will write back to you after seeing your idea for the build.

My needs for the PC are mainly:
1. Gaming - Including but not limited to Overwatch, Rocket League, GTA V, etc. In which I would like to get good performance on pretty good settings.
2. School work and programming (probably not really worth noting here but whatever).
3. Overall casual PC use and video/stream watching.
4. I might branch out in the future to other sorts of activities/hobbies involving PC use.

Now some things regarding the components I would like to learn about and get advice either from you or from sites you know and can link me are:
1. How crucial is the difference between i5 and i7 CPU's and what comes in factor when choosing between them and between different models.
2. Getting a HDD storage + a SSD or just a SSD.
3. Monitor - My current most likely purchase is the Benq xl2411z, and then using my current Samsung S24C350 as a second monitor, though I don't know much about the different types of dynamic frame control and screen taring fixes such as G-sync/S-sync and about the rules of dual monitors, so I would like to get advice on that too.
Budget for monitor is around the price of the xl2411z, and I am looking for around the same level of specs for it as well.

Thanks a lot in advance and if there's anything else I can do to help you help me or anything I should know tell me.

P.S. Regardless of how much I benefit from asking here I just want to say I really appreciate the effort and support you give for people here.

Which shop(s)?

Regarding the questions:
1. You know about clock speeds and cores, right? Higher clock speeds are always better, more cores only work if a program can actually run on that many cores. E.g. TF2 doesn't gain anything beyond 3 cores (and not much beyond 2) because it can only use 2 but then there's obviously still the OS and GPU driver. Rendering/Streaming will use all the cores you throw at it. Due to how CPUs work (I won't go into it) no core is ever perfectly utilized, so what happens on an i7 it reports 8 instead of 4 cores to the OS to get a bit better utilization (most say around 30%). So when streaming it would perform like a 5 or 6 core, but nowhere near an actual 8 core, and for anything that uses 4 or less threads (like 99.9% of all games) it won't make any difference.

2. Depends on how much space you want/need. A 250GB SSD will be cheaper than a 120GB SSD + an HDD.

3. Basically if you get >120 fps G-Sync/FreeSync become useless, if you get <120 fps Lightboost becomes useless.
For Lightboost the XL2411Z is the best options.

I will most likely send the build to either Ivory or KSP but I just wasn't sure how to approach this with you since these are shops in Israel and Ivory doesn't even have an option for english on their website.

1. So to sum it up for my needs it's generally better to get an i5 just because it costs less and doesn't make much difference?

2. On my current computer I have about 300 GB being used as of now, and I'll probably be using more/want to have more on the new PC. From my understanding though there is also a difference in reliability and speed between SSD and HDD so that is also a factor I suppose.

3. So if I add the need for the build to get me good fps on most games I can just go with that decision?
Also what about the dual monitors, will I be able to use both of them together no problem regardless of the different refresh rates?

Lastly, anything else you need to know for coming up with a build?

Edit: Just in case you can't find this on your own, in the KSP site in order to get the prices of components you go to Personal Computers > Custom Computers > Build Intel PC.

You shouldn't need a CPU fan when it's boxed, and you can always drop the SSD or downgrade the card to an RX470 if you need to save for a monitor/OS.

Thanks a lot for the build offer I'll look into it.
Still looking to continue the discussion with Setsul though, having more than one option for a build is only going to make things better and easier.

1. Yep
2. Yeah, an SSD will probably last longer.
Still depends on how much you want. 250GB SSD are barely more expensive than 120GB so I'd usually say if you're fine with 500GB just get an SSD, otherwise 250GB SSD + HDD as large as you want/need it.
3. Yeah, for TF2 it shouldn't be a problem, other games you might have to drop down the settings a bit but should still be possible to get 120 fps on 1080p.
Yes, different refresh rates are fine.

Is the 5000-5500 ILS budget including or excluding the monitor?

750 Evo is a bit slow, PSU is oversized and why all these fans?

The budget is excluding the monitor, monitor's a different budget which is pretty much around the price of the XL2411Z.

Also I just want to mention that if there's an improvement that is good/important but exceeds the budget by a little I'll probably be able and willing to fill the gap.

Is the PSU oversized? It's 150x140mm and the case says it can take 160mm length.
I'm not really a fan expert. The case comes with one, how many more will he need? 1?

Like Setsul said, if you want a better SSD get the 850 EVO
Solid-State Drives (SSD): Samsung 850 EVO M.2 MZ-N5E120BW 120GB SSD 1

If you want to make the computer even stronger (though arguably right now it's already better than it needs to be), you could try this prebuilt one (more RAM, slightly better CPU, better GPU). The SSD won't be as good compared with the 850 EVO, though. You might be able to edit the parts list, however.

When are you going to build btw?

#1733
In terms of wattage.

Most cases will come with 2 fans and that's enough. At that price point only 1 fan is inexcusable.

Probably once I'm done and sure with everything, I'd like it to be before the end of the month.

Since I'm still not sure about getting a 500GB SSD alone or a smaller SSD + a HDD I'd appreciate it if you could do both options when making the partlist.

With a 500GB SSD and no HDD it would be 5680.

For some reason the 120 and 250GB versions aren't even remotely close in price so with 120GB SSD + 1TB HDD it would be 5518.

Or just get 8GB RAM and another 8GB later. Either way you can get that sweet sweet i5-6600 + GTX 1070 combo for 5500.

To that guy who has been downfragging all of my posts for months, maybe even years:
So you finally realised that it doesn't work if I can just put them back to 0?
Congratulations on the alt account.
It's a bit sad though that it took you so long to realise that alt accounts are an option.

Looks great on first sight, I'll look deeper into it and let you know if there is a problem.
Anyways thanks a lot for your help I'm pretty sure this would've a lot been harder without it.

A few questions I already have:

1. Why 2x 8GB RAM and not one 2x8GB RAM or something else is it just because of price or something else I'm not aware of, or maybe it doesn't make a difference at all?
2. I'm not sure what you meant with "2.5" version isn't available", although it's probably not very important.
3. If I were to go with a 500GB SSD or a 120GB one like the options you listed would they be the same model like the 250GB only with a different volume or would they be another model/brand?
4. Is there something special about the case or is that changeable by me? If I can choose another one then what properties does it need to have, if any?(type, etc.)

1. price.
2. http://en.ksp.co.il/?select=.489.&list=1&sort=2&glist=0&uin=0&txt_search=850+evo&buy=&minprice=0&maxprice=0&intersect=..
They don't have the 250GB version as 2.5".
3. Same model for 120GB (M.2 version) and 500GB (2.5" version).
4. No Mini-ITX. Anything else (micro ATX and ATX) should be fine.

hey, need a build for my sister. budget around 350 - 400 euros. uses alot of photoshop and premiere, plays tf2, hearthstone and some other newerish games.
dont need an ssd since i will be taking the one from her laptop out and putting it in. no optical drive needed. no peripherals. need wifi card since ethernet cable is not an option.

I should have posted this days ago.

No HDD either?
Which newerish games? Would be ideal if iGPU is sufficient.
When are you going to build it?
No peripherals needed, I hope.
