Why is it bad to switch interp between classes?

What is your reasoning for the settings that you chose?

You don't know what you're doing.

cl_interp 0.02
cl_interp_ratio 1

Either 15.2 ms or 20 ms, you can't have both.

You don't know what you're doing.

SetsulYou don't know what you're doing.
cl_interp 0.02
cl_interp_ratio 1
Either 15.2 ms or 20 ms, you can't have both.

Source uses whichever is highest of cl_interp (0.02 s) and cl_interp_ratio/cl_updaterate (1/66 = ~0.0152 s), which in this case is 0.02 s.

Because it uses the higher value.
cl_interp_ratio 1 is useless in this context.

Snowshoealso messing with interp while connected fucks with player positions and changing it while playing shouldn't even be possible because valve added a notconnected flag to these interp commands years ago but class configs can still change them???? (maybe a bug)

Class configs changing it is entirely intentional. Valve made it so you can't change interp while ingame to fix exactly that exploit, but specifically allowed class configs to change them because they can't be used for that exploit and there's no reason to restrict them then.

You're completely allowed to switch interps and you have valve's blessing. It's not an absolute necessity to change it and you still can play different classes on the same interp if you want to, of course, but you can't say "yeah you shouldn't at all because I think it's a bug" because it's not.

To "disable" it you'd set it to 0, 1 is bad style.
Also sv_maxupdaterate is a thing. So if you want 20 ms no matter what ratio 0, interp 0.02 is the way to go, if you want about 1.3 packets then ratio 1.3 and interp 0 is what you should be using.

If there were perfect net settings there'd be no need to be able to change them.

Keep in mind that especially in America not everyone will have 22 ms ping. With >=5 ms jitter, which is not unlikely with higher ping your whole concept goes down the drain.

You don't have to disconnect to change rates for each class if you have the different network settings on a class.cfg file.
(demoman.cfg, scout.cfg and so on)

you shouldn't at all because 0.02 is the best for all classes, no switching required

What makes it better?

I'm not too experienced with interps, but I haven't heard a reason for 0.02, or anything really. The only real reason I've heard is "it's a compromise that's good for every class" but I still don't actually know what makes it better than existing interps, why I'd want it on every class, and why switching is a bad thing to avoid. And for that matter, from what Setsul's saying, if internet quality is a factor how do I know that 0.02 is even the best for me personally? How did you calculate it?

It's great if you have a good interp that really does work for everyone. Just saying "here is a good interp and it works for everyone" and leaving it at that without explaining it doesn't really make it seem any good though. Especially for something as technical as interps.

Snowshoesa3lence_what about the "rate" command, doesn't that one matter too?
the default 80000 is high enough, you shouldn't need to change it

the settings in the OP are the most important/game changing networking commands (not blocked by valve in mm and won't reset after exiting) and will work well for anyone with good low latency connections, which is most people nowadays. 20ms is a little more interpolation time than 15.2ms which is balanced for all the classes (proj/hs) and not too close to the server. too much lerp is bad and so is too little (too little can cause other players to stutter because it's such little interp time to smooth them out). i'd say over 30ms/0.03 interp would be kinda too much, 20ms/0.02 being the minimum.

considering sv_client_min_interp_ratio is a thing and there's probably servers changing it, i'll change the interp ratio to 0, even though my higher interp overrides 1. might as well

if you have shit ping or shit speeds then look elsewhere because high updaterate and low interp has been the standard here for more than half a decade. try 40 updaterate/cmdrate or something. as for servers limiting the updaterate themselves, really there's not much you can do about it unless you wanna sit there tweaking your net settings for every little ping difference or slow server. good servers use 66, and ideally you want to connect to servers close to you. obvious shit

You don't always get to choose to play on a server close to you (for some reason people still use dallas servers). It seems to me that you don't know what you are talking about and you've given next to no reasoning behind why your settings are perfect. If 20ms is so ideal why haven't people been using it already, this game has been out for almost a decade I would be genuinely surprised if it had never been tested. The only other time I've heard of someone using that interp was some other dude who tried to reinvent the wheel like you and made yet another cfg thread, but he didn't give much reasoning or evidence to support his claim that it is better either. I don't think I'm alone in trusting what setsul said over you. Why should people listen to some random dude they've never heard of?

you are doing nothing but making it worse by confusing people with useless settings that is either worse or doesn't change anything.

it doesn't look like you have any clue about anything you said, listen to setlet instead.

A 20 ms lerp isn't appreciably different from a 15.2ms one, but it requires 3 more characters that I have to type, therefore it is infinitely less valuable to me.

Also, you might as well set rate, updaterate, and cmdrate as high as they can go, because then they'll be set to the highest that the server you're playing on can support.

Seriously though, this is a dumb post. Anyone who wants to change their network settings has places to look that have better advice from people significantly more qualified to give it than yourself.
