Get quake-like textures/high LOD bias again

Hello tftv, I have been a lurker here for a long time (never registered and posted until now) but I decided to register and post for the first time today to share something I discovered.

Remember this? http://etf2l.org/forum/customise/topic-17728/page-1/ and how it stopped working for NVIDIA users (it kept working for AMD users apparently) because supposedly there was a tf2 update that made it not work anymore? it wasn't a tf2 update that made it not work anymore it was the NVIDIA drivers themselves from the 300.xx series and onwards.

Anyways let me get to the point and show you how I got blocky/super low res/quake like/whatever textures to work in tf2 again, they even work in MM. (please note that these might not be allowed in ESEA)

· Download NVIDIA Inspector (http://www.guru3d.com/files-details/nvidia-inspector-download.html), the version I used for this is 1.9.7.3 which is not that far behind from the new 1.9.7.6, you don't need an old af version for this to work.

· Either run nvidiainspectorprofiler.exe if its there or run nvidiainspector.exe then click the wrench and screwdriver icon next to your driver version. http://i.imgur.com/f1suN1k.jpg

· A new window will pop up with lots of things to change, go to where it says profiles _GLOBAL_DRIVER_PROFILE (Base profile) and look for Team Fortress 2 (you can type it in)

· After you've done that, scroll down to where it says "Texture filtering - LOD bias (DX)" and change it to +3.000. Click apply changes button.

· Look for these two buttons (http://i.imgur.com/7Us0uvB.jpg) click the left one and then click "export current profile only"to export the profile you just made since you need to edit something. It will save a .nip file or something, just open it with notepad.

· Once you opened the file, find this value: http://i.imgur.com/NTUbbMT.jpg and change the number below that to 120 as shown in the screenshot. 120 should be equal to picmip/lod 15. Save changes.

· Click the right green drive thing to import the profile you just edited.

· Now this is the important step to to get the shitty textures to work again, after you imported the edited profile, find "Antialiasing - Transparency Supersampling" and set it to "AA_MODE_REPLAY_MODE_ALL", this is a supposed workaround that makes forced LOD bias changes to work. Click apply changes.

And that's it! you can also use this for games like Overwatch, Reflex, etc.

Cheers

wasn't working for me for a long time until i found out about the anti aliasing supersampling thing to make it work.

wasn't working in overwatch either, until i changed the anti aliasing thing

edit: ooh looking at the later pages of the etf2l thread it seems the replay mode thing was already known, oh well.

If Valve gets excited enough with the competitive TF2 and want to make it fair for all, as we've seen forcing viewmodels & normal/good graphics on matchmaking, they might eventually do the same thing as in cs:go, that they force the Nvidia Inspector's lod bias-setting back to default at launch. Hopefully not.

it might increase input lag if u have really bad pc, but what it does it only increases render time between frames, so its not that big of deal

I don't know why but it doesn't work for me..

I tried using the most recent version, 1.9.7.3 and 1.9.7.6 as well, I opened inspector as administrator but even if it saves the changes they don't apply to the game.

Ideas?

I've had similar (maybe the same) problem recently, i had to remove drivers (ddu) and install them again, after that it worked fine.

also make sure you are launching inspector as administrator
