I watched it pretty recently too and I thought the same thing.

Watch Nightcrawler if you haven't yet. The main character is played so damn well.

The Martian is such a good movie

Great acting, good plot and Matt Damon steals the show

BBiA_duchessAlso if no one has seen it. 3:10 to Yuma with Christian Bale and Russel Crowe is one of the most underrated movies ever

Not to be pedantic, but 3:10 to Yuma is not underrated at all. It got great ratings, what it didn't do though was perform in boxoffices, it didn't even make it's budget back.

Anyways as for good movies that have come out recently,

Swiss Army Man is very good, and probably one of the most orginal films you'll see in a while.

Midnight Special is a great Indie sci fi film.

The Lobster is super arty, but if you can deal with a bit of arthouse, it's a great watch, also extremly orginal.

The End Of The Tour is a very interesting look at David Foster Wallace. Don't have to know anything about him really to enjoy it. I haven't read any of his books but it's still one of my favorite movies of the past few years.

Steve Jobs is incredibly well written and exciting to watch. Great acting and soundtrack as well.

The Martian. Cool mars/nasa movie.

Dope. Hilarious movie about black nerds in the hood.

The Big Short is great.

Swiss army man is such an amazing movie. Snowpiercer is amazing as well, and done by a smaller producer/director.

Second that, Snowpiercer is great. It's actually a Korean production which is cool, because Korean cinema doesn't make it to the US very often.

Now You See Me 2 if you go for entertainment factor rather than plotlines. The critics didn't love it but it's my favorite movie ive seen in a long time.

SnivyThe Martian is such a good movie

Actually just watched that for the first time last night and it really did the balance of seriousness and actually humorous humor very well, would definitely recommend. Also according to Film Theory (which may not be entirely accurate i guess) everything that happens in the movie would be scientifically possible.

Yeah I just meant it wasn't very popular at all, even though it was recognized as a really good movie

Skyfall is great. Don't bother with the most recent one though, it's really pretty bad imo.

Even though Skyfall is pretty good, Casino Royale was easily the best daniel craig James Bond film, and maybe even one of the best James Bond films in general.

watched good will hunting again recently. hadn't seen it since long before i'd gotten into elliott smith, so that as well as robin williams' death made it such a goddamn tearjerk.
american history x is another excellent movie i rewatched recently.

the fact that people rank it above goldfinger says a lot to me, I mean how can you make a bond movie better than that one; definitely gotta check it out asap

ive spent this summer seeing movies that ive missed out on my entire life so heres a list of what i think are the best so far

The Matrix
Saving Private Ryan
The Shining
Requiem for a Dream
Room (recommend the book first)
A Beautiful Mind
Memories of Murder
Donnie Darko
Her
Black Swan
The Butterfly Effect
Source Code
Snowpiercer
Scott Pilgrim
Blues brothers
Hot Fuzz
Birdman
Drive
Silence of the Lambs
Most David Fincher movies
Any movie with robin Williams
Django
Pulp Fiction
Inglorious Basterds
Seeking a Friend for the End of the World
500 Days of Summer
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Little Miss Sunshine
Truman Show
Airplane
Blazing Saddles
Young Frankenstein
Animal House

Animated
Castle in the Sky
Wolf Children
Iron Giant

A really good way to rent movies for free since netflix is a company run by losers who choose to region block their content is the use the library. I have been able get everything but memories of murder i think. gl and try to go in as blind as you can (know the basics like title and genre) because its a lot more fun. make sure you dont start your day with requiem for a dream.

Y'all need some Kurosawa and Tarkovskij in your lives. Start with Seven Samurai and Stalker and work your way towards Ran & The Sacrifice. I've mostly been slogging through old black and white noir-flicks lately though and both The Third Man & On the Waterfront has been great.

Most recently I've been watching I, Claudius with my brother and while it's TV most of the episode feel like smaller movies so imma throw it in here anyways. Brian Blessed as Augustus and Siân Phillips as Livia are both amazing.
