Planning to make some jumping guides

Hi im Exile, been playing tf2 for about 4 and a half years. I mostly just jump and bball. I also have a few jump videos uploaded to my channel.

So since afterglow kinda dropped his tutorial series, I wanted to try making some of my own. That being said there are way better jumpers around who could probably make better guides than I can and I encourage them to do so. I want to start out with some feedback on what kind of things people want to see in jump tutorials or have trouble with. Currently I plan to make videos around the different mechanics of jumping (wallpogo, syncs, wallshots, bounces) as well as other related things. I can't promise these guides will be the best of quality compared to some of the popular ones, but I'll try to make them detailed because thats something most of the current tutorials lack. o

I had the same idea a while ago, but I'm lazy and my tf2 settings are too shit to make videos that don't look awful. I was planning on just make short 1 minute videos about each technique (e.g. pogo, syncs, walljumps), basically saying what to do and what to avoid doing while using showkeys.

I think keeping the videos short and to the point will help, and showing the common mistakes people make will help them cure bad habits.

what are you planning to introduce that's not mentioned in mouse's video (besides for bounces)?

Yeah thats one of the better jumping tuts since it's made by an old jumper. I plan on going into detail with every mechanic, for example getting the most out of a basic rj. Overall its gonna be my take on jumping as a whole. I can't guarantee it's going to be mind blowing though.

Seriously all you can do is show someone how to do a certain jump. The rest is up to them to just try it until they do it.

I would recommend making a series of videos. Focus on one thing per video and really nail down the core basics of jumping then expand on the more intricate mechanics in future videos. In order for tutorial videos to be more engaging and interesting, I would implore that you do a voiceover instead of blobs of text on screen. This allows you to say more without worrying about overloading the viewer with a wall of text.

The tutorial Rainman linked is somewhat helpful, but as a newbie jumper trying to learn I found it to be more of a sloppy information overload that wasn't all that helpful. When I was learning the basics it would have been great to simply click on a video that thoroughly explained a mechanic I was having trouble with.

I expect at least one of three things:

A plethora of carrot facts and recipes scattered throughout the video.
Arnold Schwarzenegger's torso as a watermark over the entire screen.
Cats.

Do not disappoint me.

I would love a ctapping explanation/guide. I can ctap while standing still but I cant incorporate that into a useful horizontal jump.

i kinda agree that there's only so much you can teach with jumping, and i've been nolifing jump maps for like 2 years. most of it is muscle memory that you can only get down by long term practice.
that being said, there are some nifty tricks that can be taught via demonstration/explanation like ctaps and bounces and whathaveyou

I think it's a great idea, and new (or even just repeated!) material is always helpful IMO. I'm a medic main that is planning on really working on my soldier/jumping/strafing, I know some basics but anything even SLIGHTLY advanced I have issues with. I really prefer doing research/reading what and how to do, so a few things I think would be very helpful:

- !SKEYS and an explanation of what is necessary and what is preference. Apparently I naturally attempt to do certain jumps the "hard" way (i.e. strafing a certain way) - I'd love for it to be broken down a bit more
- Voiceover/casual explanation with written, to-the-point bullets of the most important concepts
- Series of videos explaining certain types of jumps, and then showing them on numerous terrains. Jump maps, but also seeing them on actual maps would be very helpful IMO
- Common mistakes and what not to do

I think for the most part, when I watch jump videos that don't have !skeys on, I can't quite tell which strafe buttons I should be hitting and I start overthinking it. I'd really just love to see different variations with keys and how to really get the timing down.

Good luck :)

Showing how you would actually apply these jumps in an actual game would be cool. For example, show a soldier doing a regular rocket jump and then wall jumping for extra speed to drop a medic.

I recommend lots of repetition. If I watch you do a jump once, then I know if I do exactly as you do I can do the jump. If I see you jump 3+ times, then I start to understand what's important and what's not. more reps ---> better understanding

As others have said, a bunch of short videos going over each jump is better than clumping them together.

Maybe explain the mechanics behind the techniques? I always found that understanding why a speedshot happens or why a ctap happens really helped me when I was learning them. Instead of just 'do these inputs', actually break down what's happening in the game engine.

good luck!

I think i want to avoid showing how these would help in an actual game because my aim was to just help with jumping for jump maps, but I can make a little comment here and there for use in real games.

Yeah, I planned on making a video for each mechanic and explaining how to do them to the best of my ability.

As for the people asking about ctap guides, I think you might not be satisfied with my guide because there wont be some huge trick to help you suddenly learn it.

I've never seen a tutorial with that good of a breakdown of speedshots, especially how to angle them properly to achieve different things, i.e., shooting way below you to go low and then finding the right place in front of you to get height without stopping yourself.

I think I'd personally find a downpogo video helpful, if there are even any tips to give besides "practice."

I think it would be interesting to go over the differences in jumping between the original and the rocket launcher.

Also syncs would be a great video. After attempting jump_sync I realized how little I knew about them and that I was just spamming and getting lucky before because the maps had good spacing.

I would also be interested in speedshots as all I know about them is that they are really inconsistent and weird.

Also on a side note a I would be interested in a bball guide if you think there is enough information you could share about. Bball is may favorite mini game in tf2 and I feel like a lot of people have no idea what is going and just try to dm to victory.

What ever you decide to do, its a great idea so I would definitely like to see it happen. Thanks for reaching out Exile, out of the depths of the jump.tf community.

The only difference between the original and the rocket launcher is that the original shoots out of the center of the screen. So basically you have to rotate back more and shoot to go the same place. The difference really only comes into play with wallpogos.

As for bball, it is literally just 80% hoopshots and unpredictable strafes. The rest is pretty much common sense.

Thanks but I know all that I've bballed off and on for 3 years and I ctap. Exile asked what people would like to see or what people have trouble with and I was responding to the first part of that. I worded the bball question comment specifically because I am assuming that Exile, being the much better player, might have something to share on the subject in terms of strategy and team play or something of the sort. Through my own experience with bball I know that it has more depth than most people give it credit for. That is not to say it is monstrously deep, just more than dm and jumping.

Also the when you say hoopshots and strafes that is exactly my point. A video could help explain those in depth and meticulously with strategies or advanced techniques/jumps (such as the ctap backboard jump to go across the whole map, or the speedshot off spawn), rather than oversimplifying it. Once again, not a super important mega deep idea, but seeing as there isn't a really great bball guide out there and Exile is arguably the best next to wonderland I figured it would be an appropriate place to offer that sort of feedback.

Thanks for responding! It seemed like I had been misunderstood so I wanted to clarify my points. I figured that the type of video guide Exile would be making would be more helpful for less knowledgeable or experienced players, so I was trying to give ideas that would be worth expanding on in my view, and could possibly help me as well, though I wasn't expecting any of them too(except the bball one, that was my personal interest).

So after reading all the replies and things friends have told me, I think im only going to make guides for more advanced things like wallpogo, bounces, ctap, and things people seem to not understand (speedshots I guess). I realized that I can't anything useful that you already don't know for the basic things, so it'd be better to focus on stuff people really don't understand instead of beating a dead horse. Hopefully this doesn't seem like a cop out. As for the bball stuff I don't think I can make a informative guide since the way i play bball is just do whatever feels natural or gaying the other team.
