Valve launches competitive beta public group
posted in News

January 27, 2016

Valve, which has so far remained totally silent on the matter of competitive matchmaking and only revealed information through community members speaking on the matter, has finally made an official move by launching a Steam group for the competitive beta.

Any interested players can join the Steam group, which is administrated by three Valve employees most tied to the beta. The group's description, as well as announcements posted on the Steam Users' Forums and Reddit by one of the employees, states:

We'll be using this group to send out announcements related to the competitive beta as well as seed beta invites for the expansion of the closed beta. If that sounds like a thing you need, get in here!

This is an interesting way to gauge how interested the general community is with matchmaking. I hope to see the group have a ton of members in 24 hours time.

Little grammar, "which has", probably change to "who have". I'd probably change the other "has" to "have", also. (inb4 Muphry's law plz)

Yeah I know I'm nitpicking.

Unrelated to grammar - seems pretty cool. Are they just going to invite random people who are in the group or something?
EDIT: nvm. Just read the actual group post again. I'm an idiot

After communicating with normal people for too long you kinda forget what the majority of tf2 community is:
Ok, now I realise that sounded quite arrogant, didn't mean to. I just found some of these posts moderately funny.

it's almost like the average pubber doesn't know anything about competitive tf2 and one of the largest points of matchmaking is to bridge the gap between pubbers and league play

BumFreezeall the threads in the group are stupid questions that have been confirmed ages ago lol

when b4nny mentioned stuff like DX9 restrictions in his MM talk, all the casuals flipped the fuck out because none of them pay attention to competitive tf2, and competitive tf2 figured that out a good month beforehand

this is a lot of anecdotal stuff, but then there's also how recently, the same casual players started paying attention to glitches/exploits that have been the game for sometimes as long as the game's existed. there's a huge gap of information between the two

You'd think the average pubber would know SOMETHING after basically all major tf2 channels (Muselk, Dane, ArraySeven, previously STAR and Jerma) made a video on the topic at some time or another, after the backcap series fully dedicated to competitive has been going on NISLT's channel for 3 months already, after b4nny, the biggest tf2 streamer right now, talks about matchmaking pretty much every time he streams and after the tf2 blog had constant updates in the news section about every major tf2 event.
By your logic it would be strange that they found out about the group in the first place, while fully ignoring all other news about competitive.
That is why I found it strange that people confuse "comp" and "matchmaking". I'm not sure how is your reply relevant otherwise because there was nothing about leagues or bridging the gap, the first couple of screens show people who are too ignorant to do any amount of research before asking stupid questions.

Don't worry, the screens were funny. Seeing concerns about soldier being "overused" or wanting viewmodels to be mandatory just shows how much diversity in mindsets about our favorite game exists.

I'm really looking forward to the mess this will be when it launches without class restrictions and valve getting the feedback they said they wanted out of implementing matchmaking, and all the inevitable changes / tweaks to weapons, class limits, and the entire system that will follow. It's gonna be a hot mess, and it will be super entertaining to see how valve reacts to it all.

e: i hope they dish out beta to people with tournament medals in their inventories first >:C
