I spent today helping a friend build a computer.

Everything works fine and all, except for the graphics card.

its plugged into the pci e x16 slot, and has the correct pci power and all fans are spinning as usual, but computer isnt detecting it. Both cards (r9 280x, and a gtx 960) work great when we put them into my desktop but nothing happens in theirs.

I went into the bios and changed the video settings to use PEG as default instead of onboard as i though that was the problem, but it didnt change anything. I looked at the pci slots in the motherboard and its even saying something along t he lines of (Slot 7 pci e x16 ----> empty). Both AMD drivers and geforce claim that there is no GPU installed either, aswell as nothing showing up but integrated graphics in device manager even with the hidden ones enabled. We checked on another program which didnt detect the gpu, but did tell us that the pcie slot was "in use" while all the other pci slots were "empty"

Im pretty sure the pci slot is dead but theres only one pcie slot on the motherboard.
I dont think its a power issue, we're using a 600w psu (corsair cx600 i think) and a 600w is enough to power my much more powerful build.

Their motherboard is a intel dbz68db, with a 2500k and we're testing a r9 280x + a gtx 960

Onboard graphics work fine, but we obviouisly need the gpu to work. If i forgot to include any information please let me know.

check to see if there are any debris in the slot of the mobo (unlikely but possible) use compressed air machine or can just to be sure.

does he have any pcie x1 expansion cards such as wireless adapters or usb cards or sound cards? try those in the slot to see if they are detected.

sounds like bad slot which is uncommon but definitely possible.

ill take my air can and extra sound card tomorrow and let you know then.

also its a long shot but try to reset the bios to default/factory settings, clear cmos, and even try a bios update. try to rule out shitty software. also if its a brand new board, it might be better to cut ur loses and rma the board if possible, could save you hassle in the end.

Is it a DZ68DB? I'm pretty sure there is no DBZ68DB.

smittenWe checked on another program which didnt detect the gpu, but did tell us that the pcie slot was "in use" while all the other pci slots were "empty"

Which program?

smittenIm pretty sure the pci slot is dead but theres only one pcie slot on the motherboard.

PCI or PCIe?

There's a number of things you can/should check:
-Check the x1 slots with an x1 card if you've got one and the x16 with something other than a GPU like #2 already suggested. Anything goes as long as it's PCIe.
-Check the PSU. Wouldn't be the first time they forgot to connect the cables. One missing jumper and the GPU doesn't see a full 8pin and won't power on.
-Boot with a monitor connected (preferably DVI/VGA) to the GPU not the iGPU. I know for sure that the 7970 (and therefore the 280X, since it's just a rebrand) does this: Without a monitor connected it won't power on. Fits your behaviour just like faulty PCIe power connectors (see above). PCIe slot in use, but device not active.

1. Yes, my bad
2. it's called "speccy" I don't know how good it is but it was pretty alright at monitoring cpu temps.
3. pcie, there's a couple more pci slots
4. both the PSU and gpu are reused and both were working earlier yesterday.
5. It turns on, says no signal detected, and turns off.

1+3: There are definitely 3 PCIe slots on the mobo.

Setsul-Check the x1 slots with an x1 card if you've got one and the x16 with something other than a GPU like #2 already suggested. Anything goes as long as it's PCIe.

4. Working with something connected that actually uses PCIe power connectors?
5. No change at all? Takes a while usually. It's important that the monitor is connected before you boot. Did you use DVI?

Just to be clear, you are connecting the display to the GPU right?

single link dvi yes
.
I didnt get a chance today, but i was going to go over and help them out tomorrowish with the soundcard and the pci slots to test.
http://puu.sh/mIm8H/2b8a91657d.jpg <--- theres the pci slots on the mobo. i might be horribly mistaken but as far as i know the blue on on the left side is the only pci e slot

it was wokring fine on his old build yesterday morning but i may be misreading your question.

TechDudeJust to be clear, you are connecting the display to the GPU right?

yes when we test stuff to fix it.
otherwise we use the integrated graphics to navigate around.
the computer just isnt recognizing anything is in the pcie slot

The black ones are PCIe x1 slots.
Test something in those, if it works in those but not in the x16 slot it's dead.

x1 to x16 riser ftw? The bandwidth choke would be real.
