Newbie Mix Coaches

InsomniaI stopped in last night to check out how things were going and offer to help out, but sadly got dragged away for the first hour. I was curious what exactly you need out of coaches. Are they there to act as captains and help pick teams? Or are they also in comms with said teams giving advice? Either way, I think coaching is something I'd like to help out with in the future.

The admins do all the captaining and picking the teams. The coaches are in the mumble channel and the server with the 12 newbies and do various things related to the game itself - things like answering questions about competitive, going over map callouts, positioning, heal order, rollouts, etc. Personally I like to get a bead on all the new players and their current level of competitive, i.e. lobbies, UGC division. As for time constraints, I've found it takes about 60-90 mins depending on how you or the other coach wants to run the mix. Some coaches like to pause after every round and go over things; other times just let them play and give 15-20 mins of feedback when the 30 minutes of gameplay are over (standard "first-to-5 wins" config). It usually takes 20-30 minutes to get both teams to the Ready Up state, going over map callouts and rollouts and class roles sort of thing. I'm sure KevinIsPwn, Randal, or another coach could pop in and weigh in on this as well. Hope this helps!

This pretty much lines up with my experience, with matches sometimes taking longer to get started when issues arise, like connection problems, needing a sub, or needing a new coach.

Basically all you do as a coach is watch the noobies play and try to keep it 1/2 way organized.

I've basically made a script lol

1. Introduction - who I am, why you should care, and why I know more about tf2 than you do (sometimes the noobies think they know things).

2. Can everybody get in the server and/or know how to get in the server?

3. Look at the pings of people in the server, maybe 1 in 10 noobie mixes you'll have some unfortunate noobie join who
is playing on a toaster or with 250 ping and you'll need to get a sub for them.

4. Go over the mid, what things are called, etc

5. Go over what people do at mid point by point, class by class.

6. Go over some basic "how to hold" stuff - you'll really struggle to keep some people in line (lots of players just want to wander around the map).

Then I pretty much just let them start and ask questions about random stuff, and go over when and how to hold when we actually get there. Lots of coaches like to go over holds for each point - but that makes the start up take too long, and generally people can't remember that much information anyways in a single sitting. I also don't like it because some noobie mixes are going to end up being rolls, and so you would have wasted all of that pre-game time lol.

If they have a person that *wants* to main-call, I'll main-call and micro everybody for the first round or two, to provide them with an example, and then let them take over (providing help from time to time). It helps me because I can spend some time watching the flank players - who often go ignored.

Then once it's over I let them stick around and ask questions, and I try to remember 3 things to talk about that happened to lecture anybody who wants to hang around. Then it's all over lol. All told it takes ~45 minutes to an hour depending on how long they want to talk to me once everything is over.

Hey, we're going to be a bit dry on admins tonight, so we won't have a bunch of people to message around for coaches. If you could fit one in, I'd appreciate it!

Also, a reminder that we're doing raffles for IM+ coaches.

What are the recommended requirements for being a coach? I would totally do it sometime if I fit the bill.

We have weekly raffles for IM+ coaches, but we will take anyone who has broken even in open (and occasionally slightly under that when no one else helps out).

A pretty popular tf2 youtuber shouted out newbie mixes earlier this week, so please come coach if you get a chance. Also, I think I might be the only admin on tonight, so please don't make me beg my friends list all night.

We are in desperate need of coaches. There are a lot of turkey stuffed newbies waiting to learn, and Kevin is away so I can't get a group announcement posted.
