Hello. So recently my headphones died and I was recommended to get a pair of Audiotechnica M50's. Are they worth it?
Sorry for bringing yet another dumb question, I just don't want to waste €150 on a headphones that I won't be using.

I've tried to ask a couple of friends about them, but

Raptor | TF2Pickup.net: i dont even know what that is LOL
Dawindi: No, I haven't. Never heard about them, sorry pal.
Sepu: What even is that

So yeah. I wouldn't say that I'm a complete audiophile, but I love listening to high quality music.

I've had mine for about a year now no problems whatsoever I love them. They are really good for their price I would definitely recommend.

Make sure you like their sound signature first.

If you wouldn't mind a flatter headphone, I'd advise the Sennheisers HD 598 as they are pretty good for gaming alongside music (also they are open).

So, let us know, what music do you listen to? Would you prefer an open or closed back headphone?

Mostly rock and hiphop. I've heard rumors that M50's are lacking bass in sound, would be lovely if someone could vouch on that.
I don't really mind if they're open or closed as long as I like the sound.

If you listen to rock and hip hop then the M50's would be better over the HD598. Another option is the BeyerDynamic DT770, they are good, but they only unleash their full potential with an external amp.

i wouldn't say that they're lacking, but they're definitely not cannons by any means. would probably benefit a good amount from an amp though. i ended up returning these though cuz i didn't think they were that comfortable past an hour or so. i have big ears though so it might just be me, but i ended up getting the dt770's 32ohm and sound quality wise they're just as good. a little more v shaped, but just as good and waaaay more comfy esp with the velour pads. could wear those things for days.

Hurt my ears if I wore them longer than a couple hours. Otherwise they were awesome headphones.

M50's are good. They have the classic V-shaped sound signature (emphasized lows & highs, recessed mids), which I don't really like, but most people seem to gravitate towards. It's the default sound signature for lower end headphones/speakers so you'll likely be familiar with the sound from whichever cans you step up.

Still you should try and listen to them for yourself before you buy, and make a comparison with an open headphone in the same price/quality range. The M50's do extremely well for being closed headphones, but they still come with that typical closed headphone sound, which comes across to me as kind of "artificial". I'd definitely try Kiler's recommendation for instance though.

Try to find a set of headphones that is more mid forward too, for comparison. It makes music feel more upfront, palpable, "live", and a tad more agressive. Maybe you'll enjoy it. Grado headphones are a good example.

As for recommending certain headphones for certain genres: I don't really get that. Preferring one sound signature over another has not much to do with a genre of music. Not to mention that something like "rock" as a genre has very little meaning. Even if you'd make a huge generalisation about "rock" and "hiphop" you could come to the conclusion that the more popular stuff in that genre is mixed in a V-shaped manner too, so why would you emphasize that with your choice of headphones? I'd rather compensate for such a thing by EQ or using a headphone with an opposite frequency response.

their soundstage is pretty bad, which isnt fun to normal music, especially if you intend to use them for games

Yep, you heard it.
For games, I'd recommend going with the Sennheiser 558's. You're still going to get a good deal with the M50s, but the 558's have a better soundstage, if you still haven't gone and bought the M50s.
