Sentinelowlflatlinesaying that overwatch will kill tf2 because it has classes and it's cartoony is like saying heroes of the storm will kill dota because it's a moba
Overwatch could definitely kill tf2 if all the good players leave for it (which seems to be happening in EU I guess)

That's not killing tf2 though. That's killing the current competitive format of tf2, about which only a tiny percentage of the tf2 players care about. Dont worry, those 24/7 dustbowl, 2fort and instant respawn orange servers aint going anywhere.

Yeah let me make sure to replace every instance of 'tf2' with 'competitive tf2' on this thread about the highest level of competitive tf2 which has been posted on this site which is the hub of competitive tf2.

Overwatch will literally pull a decent amount of TF2 players away until the money dries up, that's if Blizzard ever let the money dry up.

Consider this like Brink v2, Brink sucked because it lacked a load of basic competitive features like first person spectating (xDDDD), but people still played it because the devs threw some money at it. Evolve even has massive prize pools because the devs throw money at the tournaments, only problem with that is you have to play Evolve.

Only thing that will threaten TF2 with Overwatch is that they have Blizzard backing it who WILL throw money at it.

The downsides for Overwatch is that Blizzard have little to no FPS experience, questionable decision making and they find ways to fuck up their own competitive formats. TF2 have Valve who have Dota2 and CSGO already thriving under a healthy matchmaking and competitive format.

tl;dr Overwatch will take TF2 players for as long as there's more money in it.

It's not just Blizzard, it really depends on whether it successfully establishes itself in the eSports eco-system and corporate sponsors take it up, which in turn depends on how well Blizzard manage to inflate that initial interest to produce viewer numbers.

On one hand they may gut the TF2 competitive scene (ESEA seems super vulnerable, but at the same time most likely to retain the hard core), but on the other it's a competitive scene that has very little inherent value so they need to not only steal all the best players, but also make other TF2 players who have never previously given a shit about them care.

Timing will be interesting, whether Valve are trying to reinvent TF2 before Overwatch hits or whether they're happy to let Blizzard make their pitch then try to re-establish themselves afterwards. Given that they have almost no stake in the existing competitive scene it's easier for them to take option b than we might imagine, but I'd like to see them fight for it more aggressively.

Both companies are making a bid to convert casuals and pubbers into competitive enthusiasts, which means strategically perhaps it's better for Valve not to stoke that interest too soon only for Blizzard's preconceived esports strategy sweep them away before Valve gets it's own tournament strategy in place. Valve have the air of amateurs being thwarted by a slick corporate machine at the moment though, the apparent passivity is a concern.

Most titles that try and develop some easy publicity will just throw money at the game regardless of returns, there was a $100,000 tournament for Evolve a game that was plagued by negative reception for its stupid pre order system, it still shelled out cash just for a tournament.

I feel this is what Blizzard will also do but a lot more aggressivly. There will be people that they cannot convert over which will probably be the traders and those that have spent a stupid amount of money on the game.

The point you made on what Valve will do I 100% agree with, Valve give the impression of a company that will be pretty chilled and relaxed and then make a push for change when it's really needed, and as Valve aren't really a company that has any competitior pressure I to feel like they'd most likely wait for Overwatch to happen and then react to it than to make a move first.

There is a potential that MM in TF2 can change that, if it's done well then that can spark interest from other parties and general public players as well. One of the reasons why Overwatch could push against TF2 is just like other games. It has a ready made competitive match making mode. It's one of the reasons why I don't play TF2 as often as I used to because I can just hop in to a ranked Dota2 or CSGO game and poop on nerds.

Also as far as I know Blizzard have a more hands on approach with their titles now, unless somethings changed they now hold World Championship tournaments themselves instead of 3rd parties having control, so that's why I think that with Overwatch you don't really need 3rd party interests to make sure there's money flowing through.

Yeah I would also expect them to hold a hosted world championship and probably a qualifiers structure. What I mean by engaging with the wider ecosystem is to have third party events with alternative funding sources which, from a player's perspective, genuinely offers the chance to play truly professionally.

If there is enough interest to provide that independent sponsor support (I've seen Geico sponsoring something recently, US car insurance of all things) then that means a major viewership on youtube and twitch is on offer as well as regular prize pools of several thousand every month to the top teams. There's a living to be made there.

All the signs are that Blizzard is working with existing major orgs to produce the big eSports entry and those orgs will then have some kind of stake in marketing the game, which will push that agenda. Every shill in eSports journalism has been knocking out 500 words on why Overwatch is the next big thing and how you as a TF2 player can switch.

In some ways it's weird to see them fighting so hard for a totally unproven esports crowd, the leap of faith is pretty big. Blizzard seem to be sinking a lot of resources in whereas Valve seem to be looking at a fail fast approach where if it fucks up they haven't lost much.

Although I suppose this whole argument is predicated on the premise that there has to be a winner and loser. It's quite possible both will continue to exist side by side.

I am sure strategy meeting at Blizzard is a lot more detailed than as described above.

One thing they will need to keep competitive TF2 players other than money will be LANs, if Overwatch becomes an event at the big LANs, then that will guage more interest than any amount of £££ thrown at the game. Throwing money at something doesn't work, I think the marketing directors at Blizzard a little bit more intelligent than this.

Back to the topic, I think we might be the only team in Prem retaining 4/6 of our roster? Whats going on boys?

Overwatch isn't out yet and people are already "quitting TF2" for it lol. Also I don't understand why everyone thinks TF2 pros will just be amazing at Overwatch (it doesn't work that way). Overwatch will bring in players from everywhere and if there is money involved then there will be people working non-stop to be at the top of that game. Dunno what is with people thinking TF2 skill will translate over to Overwatch. Being the best at TF2 won't make you the best at Overwatch especially if the game is popular and has money in it.

I'm mainly talking about the Frenchies:

https://twitter.com/meltyDeGuN

The game isn't even out in beta yet and they are already PRO!

I think the term esports ecosystem covered it, I'm not sure what else I could have meant by that but if there's any confusion I'm talking about major lan events that don't necessarily rely on publisher support for their prize pools. Most major games have them happening fairly regularly.

If you are good at TF2 it just doesn't mean you are good at Overwatch.
Remember when b4nny and Co. got to play the game?

We setup a game of Overwatch devs vs us TF2 players that were invited (Star, Jerma, b4nny and me, along with 2 others). First up, we were COMPLETELY destroyed. Like, not even close, alot of them were on 10/20+ killstreaks and we never even capped a single point. I thought that with pretty large amounts of FPS experience we'd put up a decent fight, but it was basically just a slaughter.

none of us are expecting our skill to instantly transfer over. we're ready to work for that level of play. it also helps that most of us have fairly high levels of competitive experience in other games too, so it's not like playing a new game to be good is a new thing for us.

Remember Brink? That was going to be a TF2 killer because it had a cartoony art style and fast-paced FPS gameplay,
Remember Loadout? That was going to be a TF2 killer because it had a cartoony art style and was free-to-play.
Remember Evolve? That was going to be a TF2 killer because it had a stylized art style with multiple classes and characters.
Remember Dirty Bomb? That was going to be a TF2 killer because it had a stylized art style and had multiple classes and characters.

Just because a game is a First-Person Shooter which isn't "realistic" and "military", it doesn't mean it's going to kill TF2. The only thing that will "kill" TF2 as a competitive e-sport is how Valve Matchmaking is handled, and on players' perspectives on the game. If everyone signed up for ESEA or UGC or ETF2L, competitive TF2 will continue. But players, due to personal life, waning interest, or negative feedback, are starting to quit TF2, which starts a chain reaction of doubt.

Currently, the only thing which is keeping some continued interest in competitive Team Fortress 2 from players who've quit or are looking to quit is the Matchmaking. That will decide whether or not competitive TF2 truly flourishes or merely stays as-is.

Just because a new game comes out and people (who were already looking to get out of TF2) start playing it does not mean that new game is "the killer of TF2". Right now, the community's freak out over Overwatch is akin to a child worrying that they won't get attention from their parents anymore because a new sibling is about to be born.

I mean tbf I don't think TF2 players will be bad at overwatch because it's different from TF2; clearly you're all competitive players and you understand what it takes to be good, what it takes to be at the top, etc. But other than you I don't see a lot of the people who are already switching to be moba-minded individuals. Not that they couldn't - it's a video game, not a plunge into quantum physics. But I have an inkling a lot of people switching expect the game to give them the same fix they receive from playing TF2, a very quake-esque game, with pristine movement and aiming mechanics. I just don't think Overwatch will give them what they're looking for. If I'm wrong, I'd love to try that game out.

Updates:

- Sideshow BRUTALLY KICKED!! from Full Tilt. Who could possibly replace the one and only sideshow? Shadowburn? Forsak3n? SAMSA???

- New kr4tos team with Kr4tos on medic, Kalho pocket, zoob roamer, and possibly Brego demoman with spudd also trialing but nothing confirmed as of yet, current scouts who have been trialing are wltrs, tonmas, atomic, solid and sheepy (I have been told from top secret inside sources that sheepy will definitely not join).

- Hello Kitty Ninjas are confirmed Prem as they won high last season. They will make for an interesting relegation battle with the other possible high team who's going for Prem.

- Top Prem teams are looking to be Epsilon, Reason, TLR, Full Tilt, Kr4tos' team and 4-25 aka Russians. This season might end up with a very strong Russian roster if Shadowburn and Forsak3n decide to play with them (definitely the team who could end up taking points of the big teams at the top!)

- 1 other Premiership spot currently seems to be up for grabs and we may end up seeing another Premiership playoff with the contesting high teams competing for that last spot.

ETF2L Season 22 Premership table prediction (nothing officially confirmed as of yet):

Epsilon Esports
Reason Gaming
The Last Resort
Full Tilt
4-25 aka Russian team
Kr4tos' team
Hello Kitty Ninjas
???

Looks like its turning out to be an interesting season. Not sure if I have missed any teams but that's all I know of so far.

Feel free to discuss: who will be replacing sideshow? who will end up taking that last premiership spot? will there be a playoff and if so what teams will be contesting it?

I'm not kicked from Full Tilt rofl. And I don't think spudd will play in the kratos team.

You're also missing out LEGO from that list, who have picked up some decent players, though they might end up merging with TLR.

What's the deal with this HYS team floating around?

I'm not kicked from Full Tilt rofl. And I don't think spudd will play in the kratos team.

HYS wanted to make his own team, steal players from the current roster and then take the org from us as well. I spoke to the owner of TLR and he has no intention or reason to ditch us for HYS's team.
